Leeds International Film Festival (40th Edition, 29 October — 15 November)  | 

American indie marvel Mouse opens LIFF 2026

We’re very excited to reveal the opening films of the 40th anniversary edition of Leeds International Film Festival, 29 October to 15 November 2026.

The LIFF 2026 Opening Film is highly-acclaimed indie marvel Mouse from directors Kelly O'Sullivan and Alex Thompson who also collaborated on Saint Frances (2019) and Ghostlight (2024). One of the LIFF team’s favourite films of the year and an audience favourite at the Berlin Film Festival where it had its world premiere, Mouse is a heartbreaking and humorous coming-of-age story set in the early 2000s about the complexities of navigating loss. Featuring brilliant performances, including from Katherine Mallen Kupferer as Minnie (Mouse) and Sophie Okonedo as her best friend’s mum Helen, Mouse is sure to be a LIFF 2026 audience highlight.

Wicker starring Olivia Colman opens Fanomenon

Opening the Fanomenon genre programme section at LIFF 2026 is the much-anticipated romantic fantasy comedy Wicker from directors Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson. Starring Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård (also a former student at Leeds Beckett University), Wicker is a dark and delightful folk fable about a reclusive fisherwoman who places an order with a mysterious basket weaver (Peter Dinklage) for a perfect wicker husband.

Documentary about Leeds band opens Cinema Versa

A stirring portrait of a Leeds punk rock band opens the Cinema Versa documentary programme section at LIFF 2026. From award-winning Leeds filmmaker Ben G. Brown, Ultimate Thunder follows the band - comprised of musicians with learning disabilities, down syndrome and autism - as they defy odds, embrace resilience, and chase their dream of performing for a festival crowd. Ultimate Thunder is a joyful ode to music, togetherness, and punk spirit.

Award-winning animation Iron Boy is the LIFF Family Opening Film

The first-ever Family Opening Film at LIFF, presented with Leeds Young Film Festival, is Iron Boy, a gorgeously-handpainted childhood comedy drama for all ages from French animator Louis Clichy. In a farming family in rural France, 11-year-old Christophe must wear an iron corset to keep himself upright after he is diagnosed with a spinal and balance condition. Forced to reinvent his life away from the farm, Christophe discovers a new passion for music.

New work opportunities available for LIFF 2026

We have two new paid assistant support roles available for LIFF 2026, to join our team from 19 October to 15 November. The Events and Guests Services Assistant will support the delivery of screening and industry events during LIFF 2026 and the provision of services for industry guests. The Digital Content Production Assistant will support the creation, editing and organising of video content for LIFF 2026. The deadline for applications is noon on Monday 21 September.

Apply to be a volunteer for LIFF, one of the UK's leading film events, with an epic programme of more than 300 screenings and events over 18 days. As a volunteer, you will be part of an incredible festival team, gaining valuable skills, experience and knowledge, and receive benefits including four free tickets. BFI Film Academy applications for Leeds & Bradford are still open

If you're 16-19 years old (or up to 25 with an EHC Plan or equivalent), and interested in the creative, technical or business side of film and television, you could be part of BFI Film Academy Yorkshire & The Humber, delivered by INDIs Film Fest (part of Leeds Young Film) and in partnership with Showroom Cinema.

Produce a short film as part of a team of fellow film first-timers, screen it at your own premiere event, and learn from real industry professionals. No experience needed and it's free to take part (with bursaries for travel and childcare available).

Apply by Midnight on Sunday 27 September.

Sunday 13th September Northern Star Organ trio Doors 7pm | Band 8pm The Northern Star Organ trio formed in 2023 as an informal meet up between three old friends. We quickly realised a strong musical connection and started to play out live in the North of England. The ruling monarchs of England lived close to Westminster Abbey in the early Middle Ages and used the Abbey for storage facilities. As part of the Hayward Gallery Schools programme, we're piloting Art Explorers – a new project to engage SEND students aged seven to 18 who would benefit from a more relaxed environment to explore the gallery and learn through sensory-focused activities.

From creative writing and collaging to painting and photography, it’s a space to unleash creativity, develop new skills and make new friends – all while boosting wellbeing.

Weekly Escape

Hey  I know we’re not quite ready to say goodbye to summer yet, but I can definitely feel autumn starting to creep in. The evenings are drawing in, the temperature is dropping, and I’ve already spotted the first signs of leaves beginning to turn. So this week, I wanted to share one of my absolute favourite places for an autumn walk: Hardcastle Crags. Tucked away near Hebden Bridge, this beautiful woodland is one of those places that feels magical at any time of year, but autumn is when it really comes into its own. In a few weeks, the paths will be covered in golden leaves, the trees will be bursting with colour, and the whole valley will have that cosy, slightly enchanted feeling that makes woodland walks so special. ​ There are over 15 miles of footpaths to explore, with routes through unspoilt woodland, riverside paths, steep steps, rocky sections, sweeping views and the wonderful Gibson Mill tucked right in the heart of it all. It’s not the easiest woodland walk in the world - the paths can be uneven, steep and muddy in places - but that’s part of what makes it feel like a proper little adventure.
