Thursday marks the start of Widescreen Weekend, our annual celebration of the our unique cinema technology. Expect film on film, IMAX marathons and hidden gems as we screen everything from Cinerama to the Indian Western.

The Hawking Building has a unique grid-based layout which allows us to store so many outstanding objects, ranging from the unassuming — a rubber duck that actually helped scientists land a spacecraft on an asteroid — to the unmissable.
There's the Sno-Cat that was used in the first motorised crossing of Antarctica, the Whitaker Tunneling Machine manufactured for the Channel Tunnel Company in the 1920s, plus many more that your guide will show you over the course of a fascinating 90-minute tour.
Tickets are £25 with a £5 local resident discount (see website for postcodes that qualify).
Dedicated group bookings
Looking to book an exclusive tour for a larger group?
We're delighted to be able to accommodate group tours at 10.00 and 13.30 on Fridays and bookings are currently open until 27 November 2026.
You can also book for a larger group of up to 30, which we would split across two groups. Bookings close 8 days in advance, and there's good availability across the autumn months.

A bottomless brunch made for football fans!

HeyThis weekend reminded me that there is always more to discover in Yorkshire. Even in places I’ve visited countless times, or areas I thought I knew fairly well, there are still hidden corners, forgotten stories and unexpected little places quietly waiting to be found. For Heritage Open Days this year, I managed to visit two places that had been on my list for a while: Birley Spa on the outskirts of Sheffield and the catacombs beneath York Cemetery. Birley Spa is a Victorian bath house tucked away near the Shirebrook Valley, and I’ve been eyeing up its open day for the last couple of years. We were greeted by Fiona, one of the passionate volunteers supporting the site, who shared the history of the spa and the challenges of bringing it back into use for the local community. It was fascinating seeing old photographs of the building through the decades, then standing beside the naturally fed cold stone bath that still remains today. It has sadly fallen into disrepair over the years, but you can immediately understand why the Friends of Birley Spa are working so hard to preserve it. Then there was York Cemetery. I can’t even begin to count how many times I’ve visited York, and yet I had no idea this vast, atmospheric cemetery was just a short walk from the city centre. It spans more than 24 acres, with thousands of graves and memorials, and honestly, for someone like me who has a slightly weird love of old cemeteries, it felt like stepping into a scene from The Haunted Mansion. The real highlight was getting to visit the catacombs beneath the chapel, which are rarely open to the public. Down the stone steps is a vault built with space for around 200 catacomb burials, although only 15 people were ever interred there. It was such a strange and fascinating little hidden space, and a reminder that even somewhere as well-known as York still has stories tucked away beneath the surface. That’s what I love most about Heritage Open Days. It isn’t just about visiting impressive buildings for free. It’s about discovering the places, people and stories that often sit quietly in the background of towns and cities we think we already know. This is the final weekend of Heritage Open Days, so some events have already passed or are fully booked, but there are still some brilliant Yorkshire hidden gems worth checking out. And if you’ve missed one you liked the look of, it’s worth remembering that many of these places run tours, talks, open days or fundraising events throughout the year. Some also return for Heritage Open Days next year, so they’re worth keeping on your list.
