Cleckheaton Writers Group (CWG) met on Monday 7 September from 5.30-7pm at Cleckheaton Library, where we welcomed new member Saba. Also in attendance were Barbara, Dave and Karen. Michelle, Molly, Paul and Reuben passed on their apologies though Reuben did make a suggestion for the writing challenge theme.
CWG members welcomed Saba and introduced themselves and their writing. Saba writes non-fiction on learning theories and research and was published in the academic Tec teaching magazine, Impact journal and blogs. She has also written some poetry and is currently writing a book on curriculum identifying STEM subjects.
WIP progress: Karen has commissioned a new cover for her rom com Christmas Evie and has self-published this on eBook with a bonus three chapters of the sequel, Seducing the One. She has also shared these details on her newly launched website and has written two new chapters of her WIP Touchdown. Dave has written 10k words of a new project. He has also worked on two ongoing alternate history projects and 1 mock academic paper. Barbara has revisited her old WIPs and is looking at the story she wrote, Valetta Finds Her Feet, where it ends with her finding a kitten. She gave members a summary of the novel which now goes from sickly sweet to sinister.
Writing Plans: Karen hopes to promote Christmas Evie and get the paperback released. If time, to work on her WIP or editing the sequel. Dave will be working on his current untitled WIP or his next sci-fi project. Barbara hopes to work on Valetta chapters (but will write about the body). Saba will be working on her academic book and curriculum ideology STEM curriculum plus she has an idea about a non-academic story to flesh out.
Writing challenge: September Theme - Back To School (as suggested by Reuben).
Feedback: Dave shared a section of his story set in 1915 which he warned CWG members contained swearing and casual sexism. Members thought it was Sharpe meets Biggles and we look forward to hearing more as this was a section from the middle of the novel. It is historical and set in 1914-1917. Karen shared the first three chapters of her sequel. Members thought it set the characters well though one member wished there would have been more detail about Capri.
Next Meeting: Monday 21 September 2026, 5.30-7pm at Cleckheaton Library. New members always welcome.
