Saturday 29th March, 10:00am to 4:30pm (UK time) |
Friends House, London | £95
Are you a writer of fiction and/or script, looking
to develop your craft? Do you want to understand more about the
process of getting your work into the world from the people who
know it best, such as editors, literary agents and producers?
We’re delighted to be partnering with the Open
University to offer a full day of in-person advice to help you
take your writing to the next level. You will get the chance to
hear from fiction authors, playwrights and screenwriters who
will each share their top writing tips, help you to develop
your craft, and offer guidance on how to ensure your work is
ready for publication or production, as well as sharing insight
into their own writing journeys.
Our line-up has been purpose-built to provide a
range of guidance on the writing craft across both fiction and
script, as well as insight into the world of publishing and
production. A panel of literary agents, editors and producers
will end the conference by shedding light on the process of
getting your work out into the world.
A particular focus of this event is language and
character, and how to use both to your advantage when writing
fiction and script. We hope that the inspiration, information
and writing advice on offer will encourage you to return to
your work-in-progress with renewed optimism.

play, it’s time to share it. Send it in for
submissions windows, to literary
departments, to ‘scratch nights’. Send it
far and wide.”

Wilkey lays out the steps
for getting your play out into the world.

“Write dialogue as if you were
gossiping with a friend over coffee, or
swapping secrets with a mate over a glass
of wine. Stay away from the stuffy, skip
the formalities, and ditch the descriptive
passages.”
Screenwriter and
author Angela Clarke shares
her dialogue dos & don'ts for the page,
stage and screen.

“Your job as a writer is to
turn the audience into keen observers of
detail. The audience is watching
for clues it can use to piece together
where the story is going; it’s your job to
provide those clues and make sure they
notice them, and that the clues lead them
where you want to lead them.”
Screenwriter Paul
Gulino delves into the most
fundamental lessons to learn about
screenwriting.

“A musical’s structure is one
of the hardest things to get right. The
best musicals weave songs and scenes
together seamlessly, making use of every
second to capture the audience’s
imagination.”
Pitch Perfect, a
not-for-profit organisation dedicated to
the development of musical theatre in the
UK, provides us with their advice and tips
for writing for musical theatre.
