The Big Give - Youth Theatre Sharing

A group of young people performing on stage.

Dear WYP,

We’re so excited to share that Leeds Playhouse is taking part in The Big Give – Arts for Impact from 18–25 March 2025! During this week, all donations will be doubled, helping us to continue our vital work with children and young people.

Here’s a bit more about what we do and why it matters:

Hearts Youth Group - a weekly drop-in for refugees and young people seeking asylum (15-25), offering creative arts, social time, life skills, and wellbeing support. Run in partnership with The Children’s Society and Solace, the programme is shaped by the voices of those who take part - ensuring it meets their needs, nurtures their aspirations, and empowers them to build brighter futures.

Buzz - a weekly group for young people aged 14-25 with learning disabilities, offering movement, drama, visual art, and sensory sessions. By working together and partnering with other organisations, we help each young person take steps toward their future goals, ensuring they feel seen, heard, and valued.

Youth Theatre - offers the opportunity to build confidence, creativity, and friendships in a supportive space. It helps young people express themselves, develop skills, and find a sense of belonging through storytelling, teamwork, and performance.

Click to view the Youth Theatre Video

Our The Big Give – Arts for Impact week will culminate in a performance from our Youth Theatre, presenting their unique response to Animal Farm. It's free, and we’d love for you to join us!

This performance is a work in progress offering a glimpse into the journey of our young people as they explore bold ideas and bring their creativity to life on a professional stage. One of the most thrilling elements for our young performers is the opportunity to be performing on the Quarry stage with actual Animal Farm set, giving them a chance to experience the magic of theatre in a whole new way.

Inspired by the themes of Animal Farm, which has just been nominated at the prestigious Olivier Awards, the groups have devised thought-provoking pieces, touching on political ideas, power, and even themes including colonialism and The British Museum. This is a chance to see young artists experimenting, taking creative risks, and using theatre to explore the world around them.

We’d love to have you there to support, celebrate, and be inspired by the next generation of theatre-makers.

Thank you for your continued support.

token design competition

LAST YEAR’S WINNERS AND RUNNERS-UP PICTURED ABOVE.

Time for children to get creative and DESIGN A NATIONAL BOOK TOKEN for the annual competition! Our sponsors, National Book Tokens, are inviting children of all ages to share their creativity – and their love for books and reading – by designing their own fabulous gift cards.

Six winning entrants will bag HUNDREDS of pounds worth of National Book Tokens for their schools and themselves – find out more below!

PRIZES

ONE OVERALL WINNER (chosen from the first prize winners in each category) will receive a £10/€12 National Book Tokens gift card in their design for every child in their class,* and the opportunity for their class to visit a real bookshop, virtually or in person, to spend their National Book Tokens.

FIRST PRIZE in each age range wins:

£350/€400 National Book Tokens for the school

£100/€115 National Book Tokens for the pupil

SECOND PRIZE in each age range wins:

£200/€230 National Book Tokens for the school

£50/€60 National Book Tokens for the pupil

*Up to 35 gift cards; see terms and conditions for home-schooled students

HOW TO ENTER

To enter, children should design a National Book Tokens gift card on the theme of Read Your Way. Here are some tips to bear in mind:

  • What does ‘read your way’ mean to you – and how can you explain this in pictures or designs?
  • What would make someone want to buy your gift card as a gift for someone else?
  • Look at real-life examples of gift cards in supermarkets and other shops – what do they have in common? Which ones do you like best and why?

A panel of judges will select a winner and runner-up in each of three age categories: up to 8 years, 9-12 years and 13-16 years.

All entries should be produced on A4 paper using the template. Please ensure you provide the child’s name and age, and your contact details, on the second page of the form.

The closing date for entries is Sunday 6th April 2025. Winners will be announced in May 2025.

More info about the competition can be found HERE

Come spring, come new opportunities to learn new skills and unlock unknown leadership skills!

For the last 18 months we have been running a series of leadership development courses for our south Leeds community and our community of artists across the UK. Thanks to the support of Paul Hamlyn Foundation we will again run two Pay What You Decide courses this spring which might be of interest to you!

For adults living and working in south Leeds, we offer our Community Leadership sessions which take place Friday evenings for twelve weeks, starting on 4th April 2025 and include a weekend residency in the heart of Yorkshire. If you’ve ever fancied developing your confidence and skills to take on more roles within your community please do get in touch.

For mid-career artists and arts professionals, applications are open for our week-long values-based leadership residency which takes place the week commencing 5th May 2025.

We are currently accepting applications for both programmes - so if you think that either would be beneficial to you or someone you know, then please point them in the direction of the links below:

The Storm and The Minotaur

This month we are very excited to create a brand new theatre adaptation of Lucy Strange’s brilliant children’s book The Storm and The Minotaur, an exciting adventure story for 7-11 year-olds, mixing narrative, songs and social history into an engaging show for young audiences and schools. The Storm and The Minotaur will tour for free to primary schools across south Leeds this spring. Alongside the creation of the show we have led an extended workshop programme with our neighbours Ingram Road Primary School in Holbeck, inviting them into the creative process and developing the show together.

Keep your eyes peeled for more updates....

Dear Reader,

I’ve been writing ‘morning pages’ for the past four days in Marrakech. Borrowed from Julia Cameron’s transformative book The Artist’s Way, which helps us unlock our creativity, this is part of the writing ritual of Silk Road Slippers, a four-day writing masterclass, headed up by three formidable editors/writers. Morning pages are a key to confronting the horror of the blank page and to let your thoughts tumble through the vessel of your pen, finding your flow – much like journaling. My group included traumatised poets, published authors  and first-time novelists – we’ve had to read our work (written in just seven minutes) aloud, including in front of Alan Hollinghurst, a guest author for a day – and get critical feedback. So different from my normal journalism, I’ve been pushed to write with a voice that comes truly from me. It’s been magnificent, exhausting, confronting and challenging, a therapeutic cleansing of a sort – and a glimpse into why tapping into our creativity is a key to really finding out who we are.

Have a great week.

How Does Cortisol Affect Our Sleep?

I label myself a bad sleeper. It’s rare I feel fully sleep-nourished, but it’s been like that for decades and I’ve never got to the bottom of it. Our ‘flight or fight’ hormone, cortisol, may be a key to unlocking some of our sleep mysteries though. Find out more here

Your monthly round-up of the best of our Magazine

Issue Two – March 2025

Daffodils gather in gardens, an unfamiliar orb glows in the sky, another Tuesday has had its annual shrivening. All of which means but one thing: yes, spring is on its way.

Fittingly, for the season of new beginnings, this month’s edition of The Tonic features two pieces connected to our recently opened Hayward Gallery exhibitions: an insight into Mickalene Thomas: All About Love, and a tour of Linder’s studio space. And we hear from composer Huang Ruo on how he creates new work.

New approaches are evident too in the practice of theatre-maker Jaha Koo and the Scottish Ensemble orchestra – both of whom are introduced here, while author Torrey Peters champions the same attribute in fellow writer Elif Batuman.

Spring is also the season of renewals, something we channel through a revisit of a past Meltdown festival and our opening interview with George the Poet, an artist who continues to renew and reinvent himself.

By George

George the Poet: ‘there was no blueprint for what I do’

The popular poet and podcaster George the Poet continues to ‘lay it all bare’ as he sits down with Oluwaseun Olayiwola to talk grime, growth and guiding the next generation in this month’s long-read interview.

Staying composed

How I create… with composer Huang Ruo

A composer known for breaking genre barriers, Huang Ruo lets us in on his creative process, and tells us the importance of keeping his phone close at hand and learning to say no.

Artist on artist

Torrey Peters wearing a flowery top standing against a brick wall.

Torrey Peters on the ‘pure pleasure’ of Elif Batuman

The author of the award-winning book Detransition, Baby shares her love for the ‘earnest’, ‘ethical’ and ‘hilarious’ prose of her fellow American writer, Elif Batuman.

Love at first sight

A woman staring at a large collage with a black woman wearing a black suit laughing in the centre

5 things to know about Mickalene Thomas: All About Love

Get an insight into the artist behind our current Hayward Gallery exhibition whose large-scale portraits of Black women at repose are, whatever the medium, ultimately all about love.

Saltire sounds

Scottish Ensemble playing violins in an ornate concert venue

My Mixtape: Scottish Ensemble’s 10 tracks that embody their music

From Shostakovich to Johnny Greenwood, the innovative orchestra from north of the border share a specially curated playlist of pieces to offer a flavour of their distinct programme.

Seoul searching

Artist serving under a red food stall with two people sat at the counter, next to two large screens

Who is theatre maker Jaha Koo?

Introducing Jaha Koo, the answer to the admittedly rarely asked question: what links a staged street food stall, The History of Korean Western Theatre and talking rice cookers?

Yoko’s year

Yoko Ono, wears a white flat cap, sunglasses and a black trouser suit whilst holding a microphone with both hands which she is singing into. Behind her Mark Ronson can be seen wearing a suit and playing guitar.

Yoko Ono’s Meltdown revisited

As we get set to welcome Little Simz as our latest Meltdown curator, let’s indulge in the nostalgia of another edition of the festival with an iconic woman at the helm; come with us back to 2013.

Cutting room

The British artist Linder, an older White woman with long hair, wearing a patterned knitted jumper, in her studio space. She is gesturing to work on a table top; next to her is the journalist Fi Chesterton a young woman with long dark hair

Studio spotlight: Linder

While we celebrate 50 years of Linder in the Hayward Gallery, enjoy a rare insight into the artist’s practice as she leads ArtsReview’s Fi Churchman on this video tour of her studio.

Experience the cross-channel geopark through the eyes of students

What connects the chalk cliffs of Folkestone to the landscapes of Northern France? Last October, students from both sides of the Channel set out to explore that very question.

Gathering at Château d’Hardelot, young storytellers from Folkestone, Le Wast, Boulogne-sur-Mer, and Condette discovered the shared geology, heritage, and history that bind our regions. Through poetry, performance, and creativity, they brought these connections to life—capturing the spirit of the Cross-Channel Geopark in a way only they could.

Now, their journey is yours to experience in a new film, created in collaboration with JimJam Arts, Kent Downs National Landscape, and the Parc naturel régional des Caps et Marais d’Opale.

This exciting project is part of the Schools Climate Exchange and the GeoDiversity initiative, bringing together creativity and learning, and made possible thanks to the funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the support of National Lottery players.

Your feedback will guide conservation efforts, ensuring Kent’s natural spaces remain rich, vibrant, and full of life.

Where to see bluebells this spring
As March arrives, so does the first hint of bluebells in the woodlands of the Kent Downs. These beautiful flowers make the woodlands of the Kent Downs come alive with shades of blue. From peaceful afternoon strolls to weekend hikes, there’s no shortage of places to experience the magic of bluebells in full bloom.

Take time to explore the ancient woodlands nearby and enjoy the vibrant colors of spring. Just a gentle reminder: bluebells are fragile, so be sure to stay on the paths and let these dreamy flowers thrive.

What lies beneath: a closer look at the Heritage Ponds Project

After mapping more than 1,500 historic ponds across the Kent Downs, we’ve started uncovering some fascinating stories about the land we call home.

These ponds served many purposes over the centuries. Some were used for livestock, others were medieval fishponds, or even cart-washes. While old maps provide some clues, the real stories are hidden beneath the surface.

With the help of volunteers, we’ve begun testing the silt in these ponds. Archaeologists are uncovering ancient seed banks and pollen samples, which are revealing what the environment looked like hundreds of years ago. Even more exciting, radiocarbon dating is helping us estimate the age of these ponds, shedding light on their rich history.

As we move forward with the next phase of this project, we’re looking forward to sharing these hidden stories of Kent’s past with you.

TUE 09 DEC 2025 - SAT 04 JAN 2026

THE ENORMOUS CROCODILE- THE MUSICAL

“For my lunch today I would like… a nice juicy little child!”

He’s greedy, he’s grumptious, he’s horrid!

The Enormous Crocodile is weaving his way through the jungle to Lowry this Christmas season in search of delicious little fingers and squidgy podgy knees… Only the other jungle creatures can foil his secret plans and clever tricks, but they’re going to have to find a large amount of courage to stop this greedy brute.

This mischievous musical based on Roald Dahl’s snappy book has toe-tapping tunes by Ahmed Abdullahi Gallab, a rib-tickling book and lyrics by Suhayla El-Bushra, and additional music and lyrics by Tom Brady. Developed and directed by Emily Lim, it features a menagerie of puppets by co-director and puppetry designer Toby Olié, with set and costume design by Fly Davis and puppetry co-designed and supervised by Daisy Beattie.

Snap up your tickets today for this wickedly funny musical adventure, perfect for the whole family!

Originally co-produced by Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, Roald Dahl Story Company and Leeds Playhouse. The Enormous Crocodile musical was developed by Emily Lim, Ahmed Abdullahi Gallab, Suhayla El-Bushra, Tom Brady and The Roald Dahl Story Company.

Handbagged Artwork

The Queen and her most powerful subject, behind closed doors.

Moira Buffini’s clever and fiercely funny comedy is a fly-on-the-wall look at what might have happened when Queen Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher came face-to-face in the privacy of the palace.

Over the course of a decade did the Monarch and the Iron Lady ever find a common ground, or did their stiff upper lips reign supreme?

This highly entertaining Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch and Theatre Nation Partnerships production explores the intense relationship between two of history’s most revered female leaders, and the legacy they each left behind.
