The dramatist fundamentally respects and admires
humanity, telling stories that in essence say: “under
the worst of circumstances, human beings are magnificent creatures.”
The comedy writer, on the other hand, says: “under
the best of circumstances, human beings will find some way to screw
up.”
In his upcoming Comedy Webinar Series,
Robert McKee teaches the storytelling principles that set comedy
apart from other genres, the elements of joke design, how to
structure a comic story, protagonist and cast design, and much more.

McKee kicks off his new series with a history
of comedy and why it remains a key pillar of
storytelling. The deep dive continues with an analysis of the comic
character, what it is that sets comedy
cast design apart from other genres, before finishing
by answering the core question every writer, both aspiring and
veteran, must ask themselves: What is comedy?

Part 2 of McKee’s masterclass delves into four
key comedy conventions, the various subgenres
available to the comic writer, and how to mix
or merge comedy with other genres to create something
truly unique. He concludes the session by analyzing what
makes audiences laugh, and the key to understanding joke
structure.
