Black Friday

Tune into the Trails

Hi

Recently, we had the privilege of hosting the New York Times bestselling writer and podcaster Gretchen Rubin on our Northumberland and Lake District walking tour crafted by our team in Wilderness England.

Accompanied by one of our brilliant guides, Jeremy Martin, Gretchen and her sister Elizabeth explored beautiful heathery hills, wave-washed coastlines and historic treasures as they embarked on an adventure through two of England’s most distinctive national parks.

Curious about what it’s like to join a Wilderness trip? Gretchen reflects on the time she spent travelling with us on her podcast, where you can also listen to the daily voice memos made by the sisters as the adventure unfolded. We love this insight:‘You might be able to hear the sound of a waterfall in the distance. It’s a gorgeous day, we’re surrounded by alpine flowers, and we’re almost where we’re going to have lunch.’

Listen here - or wherever you get your podcasts.

If you feel inspired to join one of our adventures, we’re currently in the middle of our Black Friday Promotion, so it’s a great time to book.

The latest from the Jurassic Coast Trust team

Lucy Culkin, Chief Executive Officer, will be leaving the role at the end of the year, after 7 years with the Trust and 5 years in role as CEO. Lucy joined JCT in September 2017, just a brief time after the Trust became responsible for World Heritage Site Management of the Dorset and East Devon Coast, devolved from Dorset and Devon Council. During her tenure, Lucy has developed the strategy and led the team to deliver the 2020-2025 Site Partnership Plan, which involves stakeholders across the 95 mile stretch of coast.

Lauren and Saskia took part in a Digital Leadership Programme, facilitated by Cosmic UK, funded by Dorset Council. We highly recommend this programme to any local businesses. You don't need to know much about digital stuff at all but practical guidance is delivered throughout to really enhance your business in a digital age.

You may have been fortunate enough to see the recent exhibition to commemorate the 200th anniversary of The Great Gale of 1824.

Dorset Coast Forum, in collaboration with the Environment Agency and BCP Council created a free public exhibition exploring the lasting impact of the storm.

The Great Gale Exhibition toured 5 locations across the Dorset Coast in October and November 2024, and due to popular demand there are plans for the exhibition to return in 2025.

Exactly 200 years later, storm Bert arrived, causing disruption and advice to avoid coastal areas but thankfully, nothing as serious as the Great Gale of 1824 was witnessed on the Jurassic Coast.

JURASSIC COAST HIGHLIGHTS...

GEOLOGY

The vast time span recorded by the geology of the Jurassic Coast is laid out like a book. Each part of the coastal landscape has a different part of the story to tell, and offers different opportunities for outdoor adventures. In the morning you can be rummaging on the beach for fossils washed from dark Jurassic clay and in the afternoon you could be striding Cretaceous chalk downs, peering across the white and red cliffs of East Devon on your way to explore the heart of an ancient landslide.

The World Heritage Sites 95-mile span includes the four geographic regions of East Devon, West Dorset, Weymouth & Portland and Purbeck – each containing their own iconic towns and villages, and distinctive natural landscapes.

Coastal towns and settlements like ExmouthSidmouthSeatonLyme RegisWest BayWeymouthPortland Port and Swanageprovide the perfect stepping off point to explore the Jurassic Coast and the stories it has to tell of Earth History and our place in it.

De Vere Latimer Estate

De Vere Latimer Estate

Beautiful Buckinghamshire and beyond

Sitting proudly in the Buckinghamshire countryside, overlooking the Chess Valley, De Vere Latimer Estate makes for an enchanting base for days out exploring the local area.

If you and your little ones are fanatical about all things Harry Potter, you'll be pleased to know that Warner Bros. Studios Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter is just 18 minutes' drive away - a mercifully short distance if you've got a car full of excited muggles. In the other direction you'll find the home of Roald Dahl, where you can explore the great man's house in a fun-filled, interactive attraction. If culture and history are your thing, look no further than the beautiful city of St Albans and the atmospheric Chenies Manor - rumoured to have a secret tunnel linking it to De Vere Latimer Estate...

Take a look at a selection of some of our favourite destinations to help you plan your stay with us.
