BREAK-EVEN

Hakusha 12
Single Malt

This wonderful peated Japanese single malt whisky hails from Hakushu distillery, owned by Suntory. The distillery resides in the forests of Mt. Kaikomagatake, with the original Hakushu distillery built in 1973. Another building was added in 1981, called Hakushu Higashi. Rather fittingly, it boasts a fresh and foresty flavour profile.Nose Toasted barley, seed & nut loaf, chopped almonds and a little bit of barrel char. Hints of milk chocolate and dried grass bring sweetness. Palate Much more fruit on the palate, but it's by no means a sweet whisky. Still rich, herbaceous and grassy, with a waft of smoke along the way. Finish Quite short, though enjoyable with orange peel and a touch of minerals.

Usual price per shot £22.62
Our Price per shot £5.11

Leeds International Concert Season logo

Hi

This November, the celebrated Manchester Camerata orchestra partners with composer Rushil Ranjan and veena (large Indian harp) and vocal virtuoso Abi Sampa for a genre-defying evening at the Howard Assembly Room that promises to reimagine what music can be. This authentic fusion of cultures and connections explores themes of love, spirituality, and identity.

Our journey across Europe continues as part of the International Chamber Series as the Trio Gaspard (pictured above) takes us on a trip along the Danube. The trio performs folk-inspired music from Vienna to Budapest by Johannes Brahms, Sándor Veress and László Lajtha.

There's plenty of free lunchtime music this month as we continue to welcome some of the UK's top organists to Leeds Cathedral every Monday, plus a huge variety of artists, ensembles and much-loved music to Leeds Conservatoire every Wednesday. Keep reading to discover what's in store.

See you at a concert soon,
Leeds International Concert Season

Upcoming concerts

EverReady Band

The EverReady Band presents music from James Bond, Indiana Jones, the toe-tapping Walk Like an Egyptian, plus brassy favourites by Tom Davoren, Philip Sparke and Jimmy Webb that showcase the band's skilful playing.

EverReady Band's programme will be the final Leeds Best of Brass concert at Morley Town Hall before it closes for refurbishment at the end of the year. Concerts will continue at Pudsey Civic Hall from January 2025.

Sat 2 November, 7.30pm
Morley Town Hall

Manchester Camerata: Māyā

Experience a one-of-a-kind fusion of east and west in Māyā, where classical meets contemporary, and the traditional embraces the experimental. Rushil Ranjan's work, Māyā, seamlessly blends the sounds of a western classical orchestra with the beauty of Carnatic music, the ancient and complex musical tradition of south India.

This week, I wanted to give you a run down of the different accessible performances that are coming up in London's West End. For those who are deaf and hard of hearing, blind and partially sighted and those on the autism spectrum, these performances are vitally important to making theatre accessible to as many people as possible.

Audio described Performances

Audio described performances feature live commentary (through the use of head sets) providing information on what is happening throughout the show on stage. It helps you to visualise the set, the costumes, what people are doing and even the expressions on their faces so that visually impaired people can still enjoy the show as much as anyone else.

Matilda 17 Nov / 23 March / 17 May
Dr. Strangelove 21 November
Guys and Dolls 23 November

Relaxed Performances

Relaxed Performances are mainly dedicated to those on the autism spectrum. Adjustments are made to sound and lighting throughout the show to make it easier for those who are sensitive to noise and sound. These performances can also be useful for anyone who would prefer a more relaxed environment when going to the theatre. There is a zero judgement policy where you will not be expected to remain still or quiet and you are welcome to move around the auditorium during the performance.

Back To The Future 9 March 2025
Operation Mincemeat 10 March 2025
Matilda 2 April
The Devil Wears Prada TBC
The Lion King 29 June 2025

Signed/BSL Performances

For these performances, a British Sign Language interpretor stands at the side of the stage, signing the dialogue from the show so that those who are deaf or hard of hearing can understand what is being said on stage. BSL is a form of communication for those in the deaf community.

Following the success of his “Astonishing” (The New Yorker), sold-out New York show, Asi Wind’s new stage production INCREDIBLY HUMAN, has won over the critics and is captivating West End audiences.

INCREDIBLY HUMAN is "80 giddying, gasp-inducing minutes" (
⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Daily Mail) "full of fine, fine tricks.” (The Times), guaranteed to "leave you amazed"  (⭐⭐⭐⭐ London Theatre1) and "believing in magic.” (All That Dazzles).

Asi Wind won the Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best Unique Theatrical Experience for his previous show Inner Circle.  This new show is  a “Jaw-dropping” (
⭐⭐⭐⭐The Guardian) evening of modern, deconstructed, gasp-inducing, close-hand magic (The Stage) that sends you out with a how did he do that? grin into the Soho night (The Times).

A longstanding collaborator of David Blaine, Wind was crowned the 2022 Magician of the Year by the Academy of Magical Arts. Don’t miss the chance to witness “one of the great magicians of our time” (The New York Times).

Two individuals are sitting on a tree stump in the middle of a woodland enjoying a water break.

Now is the perfect time to get outdoors and head for an autumn amble along the North Downs Way National Trail. But it’s essential to prepare for a safe and memorable outing. Our friends at Kent Downs National Landscape have shared 10 tips on how you can stay safe outdoors this season. All the while making memories and enjoying the trail as you go.

Three individuals in wheelchairs crossing a road using a dropped kerb.

This month, the North Downs Way team, along with colleagues at Kent Downs National Landscape, Kent County Council’s Public Rights of Way, Wild With Wheels and Black Girls Hike, participated in the very first lived wheelchair experience for the Putting Down Routes project.

With the expert guidance of Cinque Ports Mobility we spent a few hours in both manual wheelchair and powerchairs, navigating the outdoors and completing everyday tasks while reliant on the mobility equipment. It was en eye-opening experience for all and lots of interesting conversations were had about physical accessibility in the context of the countryside. 👨‍🦽👩‍🦼

This will be the first of many lived experiences over the course of the project. We hope by taking part people will reap the benefits of having a wider understanding of just what it takes to make the countryside a more physically accessible and inclusive space. While working on inspiring change among policy and decision makers to help them become more open and willing to tackle disability inequality. 🌳♿

Putting Down Routes is funded through The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Defra’s Farming In Protected Landscapes programme.

A group of North Downs Way ambassador walking and wheeling across a field.

Applications to become a North Downs Way ambassador are closing soon. If you’re a passionate walker, wanting to encourage under-represented communities to the landscape, you have until 8th November to submit your application. You’ll be joining a group of fantastic existing ambassadors in a unique role which is completely tailored to you.  north
