Oh my gosh! I hardly know where to begin. Everything about the County Clare & County Kerry trip was amazing. Our guide, Declan, was awesome. His knowledge of the area was brilliant, and his enthusiasm was contagious. Each place we visited was magical in it's own way. The hikes were perfect. The lodgings were great. The food was delicious & so fresh. I really didn't want the trip to end. Thank you for this beautiful experience. I'm looking forward to more!

Helping wildlife in the Darent Valley

Great news - we are proud to fund North West Kent Countryside Partnership's new project 'All the Small Things'. The project will focus on creating habitats for invertebrates and small mammals that bats and owls feed on, as well as new roosting and nesting opportunities too. Additionally, the funding enables volunteer training, including wildlife monitoring and collecting owl pellets for the Mammal Society's ‘Searching for Shrews’ project.

Funding provided through the Farming in Protected Landscapes programme from Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Kent Downs National Landscape (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).

Exploring the Darent Valley's Roman legacy

The Kent Downs has an outstanding heritage spanning across thousands of years. The Darent Valley has an interesting Roman legacy and most recently Kent Downs' Archaeologist, Dr. Anne Sassin, took the stage at the Kent Archaeological Society Research Group Conference 2024, to share fascinating insights from recent archaeological work in the area.

Anne presented findings from the Darent Valley Landscape Partnership, focusing on new discoveries at Lullingstone Roman Villa. While extensively excavated in the 1950s, recent community-led investigations have revealed intriguing evidence of continued agricultural use and hints at a larger ritual landscape in the unexcavated granary area and chalk slopes above the villa. Anne also explored the possibility of redating Lullingstone and its significance as a local production centre, offering an exciting new perspective on the villa’s historical role in the region.

You can take a walk through history on the Darent Valley Rail Trails - River and Ruins and explore Lullingstone Villa for yourself. This 9-mile walk, from Farningham to Eynsford, celebrates the impressive heritage of this area and is not to be missed.
