Leeds School Library Service is 50!Congratulations to our School Library Service on its 50th anniversary! Leeds School Library Service is part of Leeds Libraries and provides books, tailored information and advice to support classroom teaching and build a culture of reading for pleasure in schools. The service began life in 1974 with just a handful of resources, but now supplies schools with a choice of over 300 amazing resource boxes full of inspiring themed reads. Last year they delivered over 196,000 books to schools across the city. The team also organises fantastic author events with over 6,000 children getting a chance to meet and speak to inspiring authors and illustrators in the last year. Don’t just take our word for it, here’s what schools have to say: "I love how helpful and enthusiastic the SLS team are and hope there will be another 50 years of SLS lined up." "Our jobs as educators would be much harder without you" "SLS is a wonderful service which I know does not exist in all areas. We are incredibly lucky to have it." Here’s to another 50 years of spreading the joy of reading! Summer Reading ChallengeWith just two weeks left of the Marvellous Makers Summer Reading Challenge, don't forget your child can finish off the last of their 6 summer reads and receive a brilliant medal and certificate at your local library! This is a fantastic achievement that children can take to school and show their classmates and new teachers. The Summer Reading Challenge 2024 ends Saturday 14th September. |

HeboconWe ran our first ever Hebocons - competitions to make the world's best worst robots out of broken toys - recently at Central Library, Armley and Seacroft Community Hubs and Libraries Over 80 young people and adults joined in, learning how to use hand tools to take toys apart and put them back together in weird and wonderful ways, a la Sid from Toy Story. The creativity at these events was mind-blowing, and many of the creations are currently on display in the Art Library at Central Library. Hebocon was inspired by our visit to Barnsley Libraries, who have been running these for a few years. The funding for the tools came from a shared grant between us and Barnsley. All the toys were donated by our wonderful families and council colleagues across Leeds, and especially from Revive CIC in Kirkstall and Seacroft. Many thanks to everyone who donated, we couldn't have done it without you. It's been such a success that we already have Halloween pencilled in for the next opportunity to let our little Dr Frankensteins run amok, so look out for more events here! |
