LIFF Presents the Three Colours Trilogy with Pictureville Cinema

A combined image of three stills from each film, showing lead characters in colours which represent the French flag.

Leeds International Film Festival have teamed up with Pictureville Cinema at the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford to present the new 4K restoration by Curzon of the Three Colours Trilogy, a cinematic masterpiece created by the legendary Polish director Krzysztof Kieślowski. The trilogy consists of three films - Three Colours: Blue, Three Colours: White and Three Colours: Red - each representing one color of the French flag and exploring the themes of liberty, equality, and fraternity.

Together, the Three Colours Trilogy represents a tour-de-force of cinematic storytelling, featuring Kieślowski's signature themes of human connection and the search for meaning in life. The trilogy has won numerous awards and accolades since its release in the 1990s and has become a beloved classic of world cinema.

Don't miss the unique chance to experience these timeless films in all their restored, high-definition glory on the big screen.

Three colours: Blue

A woman sits on a reclining seat, bathed in blue light and shadow.

 8 - 9 April / Pictureville Cinema

Three Colours: Blue is the first in Krzysztof Kieślowski’s acclaimed trilogy and tells the story of Julie (in a stunning performance by Juliet Binoche) who is struggling to come to terms with the death of her husband and child. Devastated, she tries to make a new start but begins to uncover some unpleasant facts about her husband’s life. Three Colours: Blue was released to immediate success, winning the top prizes at the 1993 Venice Film Festival and unanimous praise from critics and audiences worldwide.

Three colours: WHITE

A close up of a young bride, smiling directly at the audience, bathed in white.

14 - 16 April / Pictureville Cinema

The second film in the Three Colours trilogy is an ironic dark comedy about a man who plots revenge on his ex-wife (Julie Delphy) after his life falls apart. Tonally lighter than the other Three Colours films, White is a witty, bittersweet anti-comedy which explores the revolutionary theme of equality as represented by its colour on the French flag.

THREE COLOURS: RED

A profile show of a young woman blowing bubblegum, in front of a red fabric backdrop.

22 - 23 April / Pictureville Cinema

Three Colours: Red is the final film in the trilogy and is often considered Kieślowski’s masterpiece, released to universal critical acclaim shortly before Kieślowski’s death and nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Director. It tells the story of a model named Valentine (Irène Jacob) whose own life becomes entangled in the life of a retired judge when she rescues his dog from a car accident. The film explores themes of love, coincidence, and the interconnectedness of all things and ties together the previous films of the trilogy.

1 - 8 April / Carriageworks Theatre & HEART Centre

Leeds Young Film Festival is currently taking place but there's still some fantastic films to check out including the Cinemini Short Films; a collection of short films from around the world for little ones. Another highlight is Gabi, Between Ages 8 - 13, a fascinating documentary following a talkative and lively girl over 5 years as she begins to explore her own identity. And on Saturday 8 April we're teaming up with Hyde Park Picture House to bring you Amazing Animations at HEART Centre; a wonderful collection of shorts from the London International Animation Festival. Book now to enjoy family films with the ones you love over the Easter Holidays.

Films at Howard Assembly Room

Still from Embrace of the Serpent (screening April 21)

Howard Assembly Room have a new programme of films complementing – and critiquing – Opera North’s concert staging of Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers. With introductions by specialist academics from the University of Leeds, these films by female and global majority directors offer a contemporary counterbalance to the opera, and a space for critical thinking and discussion on the subjects it raises for us today. Claire Denis' masterpiece Beau Travail is a luminous tale of desire and despair in the French Foreign Legion, screening Thursday 6 April. Embrace of the Serpent will be screening Friday 21 April; shot on 35mm film, Ciro Guerra’s dreamlike masterpiece follows two Western scientists, 40 years apart, who venture deep into the Amazon on a quest for a legendary healing plant, and appeal to the same shaman for guidance.
