Dear, Sometimes it takes local to think global. I went to a wonderful evening at a London charity, called West London Welcome, which was set up in 2018 to give a place of refuge to asylum seekers. It offers activities, classes, legal advice and, most importantly, a place of safety, warmth and hope. To hear the stories of Betul, a psychotherapist from Turkey threatened with imprisonment after the military coup; or surgeon Aiman, originally from Yemen, but who was working in China and happened to be on holiday in Cambodia when the pandemic struck and he had no way back; or Munia, from Morocco, who fled an arranged marriage and a husband who struck her and her children – this put human faces and human stories to front and centre. Given the rhetoric about asylum seekers and the new immigration bill, it seems we’ve forgotten how to listen – and how to care. As the charity’s founders said, let’s build back Britain kinder.
