Close-Up on Enemies by Svetlana Chmakova

Svetlana Chmakova is back with another installment of the Berrybrook Middle School series, this time focusing on Felicity and her younger, high-achieving sister, Letty.

“Felicity especially, I felt, had an interesting story,” Chmakova told PW, “with her younger sister being in a rival club and being extremely capable and accomplished AND bratty about it. The pressure, both real and imagined, to succeed in 'All the Things,' as well as how different people respond to that pressure are among the bigger themes in Enemies.”

Chmakova is no stranger to that kind of pressure; the author spent fifteen years making comics before publishing her first book, the middle grade graphic novel Awkward, which sold over 250,000 copies. Now, Chmakova can think about other things, like what creatures to include in the second volume of The Weirn Books.

“I am thinking I should put a dragon in this one,” she told PW. “Should I put a dragon in this one?… I really want to. Maybe I will.”

This newsletter was produced in partnership with Yen Press

Getting to know Svetlana Chmakova

Svetlana Chmakova, author and illustrator of the Berrybrook Middle School series and The Weirn Books, Vol. 1: Be Wary of the Silent Woods, among other graphic novels and manga books, needs little introduction. Her fifth Berrybrook title, Enemies (JY/Yen Press, Sept.), returns to the world of the “art club kids,” with lots of humor, middle school friendship, and more than a few awkward moments. Chmakova chatted with PW about writing and illustrating for young readers and the ever-evolving world of graphic novels and manga.

What are some continued sources of inspiration for your work?

My childhood and the many unanswered questions about human behavior and life in general that I had back then—and still have now, a lot of the time. Also, a lot of coffee, sleepless nights staring at my screen, and my many, many, many varied and random interests.

Her sister, Letty, teases Felicity that she never finishes stuff, but that’s just because Letty is so perfect. Still, life is good with plenty of friends—drawing with the art club and playing games with her buddies keep her busy. But when she decides to join a contest to show Letty that she CAN get things done, Felicity begins to wonder if friends becoming enemies is easier than she thought. Are they really enemies, though…? What does it even mean to be enemies? And…who is it that she needs the most on her side…? Preorder a copy

Close-Up on Ryan T. Higgins

Ryan T. Higgins, author-illustrator of the beloved Mother Bruce series, is back with another hilarious tale about everyone’s favorite grump, Bruce—and this time, readers are invited to collude with adorable mouse friends Rupert, Thistle, and Nibbs to drag the ever-unwilling Bruce into his next adventure.

“One convenient thing about writing stories about a grump is that I can get away with more bad things happening to him before the audience stops laughing and starts feeling sympathy for him,” Higgins told PW. “And when the cause of all those mishaps is some adorable mice, all the better.”

Higgins has wanted to write an interactive book for a while, but ultimately it was Bruce and the mice who shaped the story—with Rupert, Thistle, and Nibbs trying to drag Bruce into antics he wants no part of. “All I had to do was keep up and take notes,” Higgins said. “The mice enlist the help of the reader in getting Bruce to sleep. Mayhem ensues—along with plenty of jokes.”

Young readers will relish the chance that Hey, Bruce! provides to join in the hijinks and conversation. “That’s essentially what the Bruce books are,” Higgins said, “me having ridiculous conversations with myself and seeing what happens.”

This newsletter was produced in partnership with Disney-Hyperion

Catching Up with Ryan T. Higgins

Picture book author-illustrator Ryan T. Higgins has no shortage of distinctively charming anthropomorphic characters. Among his most popular is Bruce—the curmudgeonly ursine protagonist who, despite his best efforts, can’t seem to escape the attention of three adoring (and adorable) mice. In Hey, Bruce! An Interactive Book, out in September from Disney-Hyperion, the titular character returns at his most reluctant and most hilarious.

Every Christmas, I take out my copy of Santa Bruce—and I don’t even have kids! What do you think makes the series so beloved by both children and adults?

My hope is that there’s a little bit of everything for everyone in my books... but really, they’re mostly for me. My goal is to have as much fun as possible making books, and I hope my audience has fun with me.

I lucked out when Bruce walked into my head years ago. We all know a few lovable grumps. My grandfather was one. I’m drawn to these sorts of characters, probably because I’m such a people pleaser that writing about a grump is therapeutic for me.

Closeup on Hispanic Star by Claudia Romo Edelman

In collaboration with Claudia Romo Edelman, Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group presents the middle grade Hispanic Star biography series, featuring groundbreaking Hispanic and Latinx heroes who have shaped our culture and the world.

“I kept seeing these incredible series coming out about heroes and their stories, their biographies, but I soon realized very few of them were highlighting Hispanic and Latino heroes,” Edelman told PW. “I started thinking, why not? We’re such an integral part of American history and life; our history is American history.”

Aimed at young readers, the series—which kicks off with iconic and fullhearted role models Celia Cruz, Queen of Salsa, and Roberto Clemente, Puerto Rican Baseball Hall of Famer—inspires us all to be who we are. “We know that if you can see it, you can be it,” said Edelman, who notes that she did not identify as Hispanic until she moved to the United States as an adult. “It’s very important for our children to learn about their own history, their own role in this country, for them to be proud and to learn.”

Edelman has learned so much through researching the series and knows that readers will too. “There have been so many facts and stories I wasn’t aware of,” Edelman said. “Researching every book has given me even more insight and admiration for our heroes. It has also doubled my motivation to keep working for our community.”

Getting to know Claudia Romo Edelson

Celebrating the Human Family: Close-Up on the Hispanic Star Series

In the Hispanic Star series of biographies for young readers, author, activist, and Mexican-Swiss diplomat Claudia Romo Edelman shines a light on the lives of Hispanic and Latinx individuals of yesterday and today. Edelman is the founder of the We Are All Human Foundation, a New York–based nonprofit organization devoted to uplifting communities, promoting diversity, and advancing equity. She previously published two volumes of Hispanic Stars Rising: The New Face of Power, titles for adult readers that celebrate the contributions of Hispanic Americans. Edelman saw an opportunity to reach young readers with these inspiring stories—and a partnership with Macmillan was born. The middle grade series launches in September with the first two titles, Hispanic Star: Celia Cruz, coauthored with William Alexander and illustrated by Alexandra Beguez, and Hispanic Star: Roberto Clemente, coauthored with Sara Echenique, illustrated by Manuel Gutierrez.

Tell me about the We Are All Human Foundation and Hispanic Star?

When I started working for UNICEF in 2014 and moved to New York, I saw that divisive language was getting too much traction—the 2016 elections, Brexit, the narrative of otherness growing—it became the one thing that could derail the progress we've seen. We Are All Human was born in this very important moment; I wanted to remind everyone we belong to the same human family. Being the optimist that I am, I know change is possible because I’ve seen it happen.

From the Hispanic Star Biography series

Meet the Queen of Salsa, Celia Cruz—once just a girl from Havana, Cuba, who loved to sing. Her soulful voice, compelling charm, and unstoppable determination led to her meteoric rise to fame, opening the door for Latinx performers everywhere. Her booming career took her from the Sonora Matancera to the Fania All-Stars, with the rising popularity of salsa, a genre born of Afro-Cuban musical stylings. Six decades and more than seventy albums later, Celia’s influence still has an undeniable hold on today’s music. Preorder a copy

Meet Puerto Rican Baseball Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente—once just a kid from Loíza, Puerto Rico, who loved to play baseball on the streets of his hometown with friends and family. A professional baseball right fielder, Roberto played eighteen seasons with Major League Baseball, but his storied career began long before he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates. PW Closeup: Melissa De La Cruz

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz comes the laugh-out-loud picture book debut Doña Esmeralda, Who Ate Everything!, about a very old, very stylish, and very small lady who loves to eat, you guessed it, everything!

What happens when Doña Esmeralda discovers that she doesn’t only have to eat children’s ooey, gooey, mushy, smelly leftovers and that she could be stealing their tasty treats too? Find out in this hilarious read-aloud inspired in part by stories from the author's childhood in the Philippines and by her maternal grandmother, Lola Eleng, who de la Cruz remembers as a “mischievous” food enthusiast and a great cook.

“I think the appeal for kids is the mischief and the naughtiness,” de la Cruz told PW about the story. “Also, that Doña is always stymied. In a way, she’s a kid herself.”

In addition to loads of shared laughs between kids and parents, de la Cruz hopes that Doña Esmeralda’s adventures will inspire young readers to be adventurous at mealtime. “I am always sad when I see picky eaters,” she said, admitting that she used to be one herself. “There is so much to eat out there and enjoy! So go get tikka masala and adobo and lumpia!”

This newsletter was produced in partnership with Scholastic/Orchard Books

Catching Up with Melissa de la Cruz

Melissa de la Cruz is best recognized for her numerous young adult books, including the Blue Bloods and Disney Descendants series, as well as several stand-alone novels. Her latest project, a humorous picture book illustrated by Primo Gallanosa, is quite a departure for the seasoned author.

Doña Esmeralda, Who Ate Everything! (Scholastic/Orchard) is about a very small, very old lady with very tall hair who develops an enormous appetite for pretty much everything. De la Cruz spoke about the Filipino children’s stories that helped inspire the project and about the enriching experience of writing within the picture book format for the first time.

You’re such an accomplished YA author. What made you decide to write a picture book?

It has always been my dream to write a picture book! When my daughter was young, we devoured and read so many together—we loved the Elephant and Piggie series, Jon Scieszka, Dr. Seuss. So I really wanted to write something for kids that age, who are reading books with their parents. It’s one of my favorite memories of my daughter’s childhood.

What did you find most challenging and rewarding about writing a picture book?

The most challenging aspect was how to tell the story in a limited number of pages. A picture book is essentially a short book. As someone who writes novels, it was a challenge to try and tell a full story in that way. You really have to be concise and also get right to the point but also be entertaining.

Tell me about your character, Doña Esmeralda.

Doña Esmeralda is partly inspired by my maternal grandmother, Lola Eleng, who was mischievous and loved to eat leftovers and just great food in general. She was fabulous and funny and a great cook. And Doña Esmeralda is also an homage to Lilit Bulilit, a character from a famous Filipino picture book that I loved to read growing up.

Weird but True! World Closeup

True to its mission to “ignite curiosity and excite and inspire a new generation of explorers,” National Geographic Kids is taking its fan-favorite, bestselling Weird But True! franchise to the next level—in a super-stuffed, globetrotting tour of the wackiest, wildest, and downright weirdest wonders on planet Earth.

Weird But True! World 2023, which publishes in August, goes continent-by-continent to explore the weirdest things the world has to offer through lively blurbs, zany maps, incredible photo spreads, stats, personality quizzes, and more. Young readers will visit an amusement park deep underground, dive into a crystal-clear crack between continents, take a trip to the world’s most remote toilet, and, of course, meet all manner of weird animals big and small along the way.

National Geographic Kids remains the only kids brand with a world-class scientific organization at its core—including explorers, photographers, researchers, writers, and fact-checkers—which means parents can feel just as excited about Weird But True! World 2023 as their kids do. Young readers move from one zany bite-sized wonder to the next, expanding their curiosity to include places far beyond their homes and neighborhoods.

“By introducing readers to these experiences when they are young,” Becky Baines, editorial director at National Geographic Kids, told PW, “we hope to open their worldview to the possibilities outside their normal day-to-day. With a little inspiration and imagination, they can be transported anywhere. The fact that they're learning a ton of information in the process is just a bonus.”

New From Nat Geo Kids' Weird But True!

Introducing the Nat Geo Kids Weird But True! Annual

Whether it’s wild facts about animals, incredible human feats, or famous landmarks, the Weird But True! library of titles from National Geographic Kids is all about sharing the wonders of the world with young readers. Now, a new book is launching from National Geographic Kids in the form of an annual compendium. Weird But True! World 2023, which publishes in August, is full of all the things that readers love about Weird But True!, and the annual format means that there’s always new content to look forward to. Becky Baines, editorial director at National Geographic Kids, gave PW a sneak peek at the new book.

How would you describe the Weird But True! family of books?

Weird But True! is "edutainment" at its finest. The combination of the wow factor of weird information, stunning images and fun infographics, and pithy, quick-bite content make it the perfect pick for curious kids who love to be surprised by all the wonderful, bizarre stuff our planet has to offer. The reliability of the content thanks to a team of fact-checkers and researchers means the books are jam-packed with information that parents can trust. It will always be my #1 recommendation for reluctant readers and bookworms alike, whether kids are already fans of nonfiction or just dipping in a toe. There's something here for everyone.

The Sheikh Zayed Book Award Celebrates 16 Years

Established in 2006 in Abu Dhabi, the Sheikh Zayed Book Award (SZBA), often referred to as the “Arab world’s equivalent to the Nobel Prize,” is named after the founding father of the United Arab Emirates, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan—himself a great lover of poetry and literature. The award is unique in the world of awards insofar as it honors a wide variety of literary and publishing professionals including authors, translators, publishers, and organizations across a broad range of categories, including Arabic Culture in Other Languages, Translation (either to or from Arabic), Publishing and Technology, Contribution to the Development of Nations, and Literature (Children’s, Literary and Art Criticism), among others.

This year’s award—the winners of which have already been announced—will be presented at a ceremony at the Louvre Abu Dhabi this week, as part of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair.

The 2022 Sheikh Zayed Book Award Winners
The Sheikh Zayed Book Award is one of the Arab world's leading prizes dedicated to Arabic literature and culture. This year, the Award received 3,000 submissions—a 28% rise over 2021, when a total of 2,349 applications were received. For the 16th edition of the Award, submissions were made from 55 countries: 20 Arab and 35 others, including the United States. Learn More »

Elevating Arabic Language and Culture
The Sheikh Zayed Book Award (SZBA) is today administered by the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre, which operates under the auspices of the Department of Culture and Tourism-Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi, it must be said, has its attractions; these include the renowned Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, with 82 domes and a capacity of 40,000 worshippers, as well as several internationally acclaimed museums, including the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the upcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi museum. Learn more »

SZBA Panel Featured at U.S. Book Show
With the growing interest in the U.S., this year’s U.S. Book Show will feature a panel discussion titled “Bringing the World to Your Door: A Spotlight on Arabic Literature and Culture.” Three panelists—2021 winners Tahera Qutbuddin and Michael Cooperson and 2022 winner Muhsin Jassim Al-Musawi—will discuss how, for centuries, Arabic literature and culture have influenced some of the most revered authors and thinkers in the West and why is it important that we continue to share works of this diverse culture around the world. Learn More »

How the SZBA Fosters Arabic Translation
The tradition of literary translation from Arabic is not long. It was only in 1966, when Al-Tayeb Salih’s Season of Migration to the North was published, that a contemporary Arabic-language title attracted international attention when it appeared in English just three years later as part of the legendary Heinemann African Writers series in a translation by Denys Johnson-Davies—who was himself the winner of the very first Sheikh Zayed Book Award for translation in 2007. In 1973, the General Assembly of the United Nations approved Arabic as an official UN language. Then, in 1988, Egyptian writer Naguib Mahfouz was the first Arabic-language writer to win the Nobel Prize. Learn More »

With popular series such as the Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook, Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children, and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and new books like What’s Your Grief?, Kid Trailblazers, and Pet That Dog!, Quirk has something for readers of all ages.

"We’ve always tried to be a publisher that looks at the whole package and process and every element of a book as part of what makes them resonate,” Quirk founder David Borgenicht told PW. “It’s our goal for every new title to have something unconventional, attention-getting, compelling yet substantive, and ‘quirky’ that gives the reader multiple reasons to pick our books up, to want them, and to share them with others.”

And while Quirk's books may be high-concept and quirky, Jhanteigh Kupihea, the company's SVP publisher, is quick to point out that there's a whole lot more to the publisher's list.

"Quirk has always been known for unconventional books," she says, "but what I love about the list now is that nearly every book is marked by a seriousness of purpose, which we're bringing to categories that don't always carry that type of expectation."
