Ever wondered what
it’s like to work as an artist in prisons?
Ever had a great idea
for a creative project but not known how to make it happen?
Join imagine if
theatre for a series of training sessions all about delivering
creative programmes in prison settings and with people who have
convictions.

The series of 5 online training sessions will
take place every fortnight from Thursday 29th April – Thursday
24th June and are aimed at artists, theatre companies and
criminal justice practitioners.
Each
session is focused on a different aspect of creativity in
criminal justice settings and you can choose to mix and match
sessions or to complete the whole series. See below for
information on bursary places.

DEVISING AN
ESCAPE: THEATRE MAKING IN PRISONS Thurs 13th May, 3pm-5pm
This training will give you an insight into the
process of designing and delivering theatre and arts projects in
prisons. By the end of the session, you will be able to
confidently design and start to plan an arts project for a prison
setting.
A CAPTIVE AUDIENCE:
PRISON TOURS Thurs 27th May, 3pm-5pm
This training will provide a detailed look at the
process of taking professionally produced theatre into a prison
setting. By the end of the session artists and theatre companies
will be able to understand the unique challenges of touring
theatre to prison settings and the steps that must be taken to
plan a successful theatre tour. By the end of the session CJS
practitioners will be able to confidently invite a theatre
company to perform at their establishment.
CREATIVITY
‘ON THE OUT’ Thurs 10th June, 3pm-5pm
This training will explore the process of making art
and theatre with groups of people with convictions in community
settings. By the end of the session attendees will be able to
confidently design and start to plan an arts project for a
community setting, working with people with convictions.
PROVE IT:
MEASURING CREATIVITY Thurs 24th June, 3pm-5pm
This training will provide you with the knowledge of
what success looks like to different stakeholders and the tools
to effectively measure the impact of your work in the criminal
justice system. By the end of the session, you will be able to
confidently design an evaluation plan for an arts project in the
criminal justice system.
FULL DAY
WORKSHOP: PRISON PRACTICE JAM & NETWORKING Thurs 29th
Sep, 10am – 4pm , Leeds
The online sessions will lead up to a full day ‘practice jam’ in
September, where you will have the opportunity to meet and learn
from other artists and criminal justice practitioners. People
with lived experience of the criminal justice system will help us
to practice exercises and provide feedback on our creative
approaches. This training will provide you with a space to
share existing theatre exercises, adapt the tools you know and
love with input from others and learn new techniques for bringing
creativity into criminal justice settings. By the end of the
session, you will be able to critically analyse the suitability
of your practice for a prison setting, introduce new techniques
to your practice and build your confidence in creative methods of
working with prisoners and people with convictions.

Free as a Bird has been
created in collaboration with some of imagine if's Bird on
the Wing Graduates
who have worked with us since they were in prison, and ever since
they were released. It shows the value the arts have in helping
people change their lives.
