Cleckheaton Writers Group Minutes, meeting 12 April 2021

Cleckheaton Writers Group (CWG) met on Monday evening at 5.45pm on Zoom with Sarah, Karen, Sam, Gemma and Neil in attendance, Daniel and Alice having given their apologies.

The minutes from the previous meeting were agreed.

WIP updates: Karen has been working on her new WIP as part of Bootcamp and CampNaNoWriMo, aiming for over 1k words per day, and drafted a new picture book. She has also been editing, has submitted to NWN A Writing Chance (with a newly written short piece), Hanna Kim Twitter comp, Killing It Crime competition, Writer's Digest MS Award and CBC Breakthrough Writers Mentoring. She has been proofreading and formatting a crime novel for a fellow writer, undergoing the excellent Neema Shah marketing course, applied for a job with WriteMentor and has been shortlisted for the Owned Voices Novel Award 2021. Gemma is also taking part in Bootcamp, a Facebook group for CampNaNoWriMo, undertaking 1 hour of writing each day (20 hours). She has new chapters to be written, but has a 78k word novel in total. She has also received favourable and constructive feedback on the first 10k words of her novel from Bookouture. Neil has been working on his short story 'cubbyhole' which he is hoping to finish as he is also doing CampNaNoWriMo this month. Sarah has been undertaking the Jericho Writers Self Editing Course, she has completed three weeks of the six, it is super intense but good as every week a piece is shared for robust critiquing. She is working on book three and has planned out book four. Sam has been busy with University work but has been thinking about his fantasy themed WIP. He's been studying the cold war and is considering making the WIP post-apocalyptic. Sarah recommended The Box for dystopian reading.

Feedback session: Karen shared the first few chapters of her rom com sequel. Sarah had sent her feedback via email. Sam felt the chapters were well written and Gemma thought it was a good continuation from the first book, the banter with the chracters was great and set it up for the following chapters. Neil will read and feedback.

CW comps/workshops/events: The Summer Festival of Writers is virtual this year, £95 for three months of workshops. There is a Twitter competition for Underrepresented Writers in the North of England and both the York and Ilkley Literature Festivals are coming up. Neil informed members that the Writing magazine has a guide to literary festivals in this month.

Sam left the meeting at this point.

Writing plans: Sarah will be continuing with her self editing course and plotting book four. Neil will be finishing his short story as part of CampNanNoWriMo. Gemma will carry on editing book two as part of CampNaNoWriMo and Bootcamp, and Karen will be continuing with the marketing course, editing and drafting her new WIP as part of Bootcamp and CampNaNoWriMo (hopes to edit or write 1k each day).

Next meeting: Monday 26 April 2021 at 5.45pm on Zoom (same codes as this meeting)
