October News From Slung Low

Hello!
As we enter October there’s loads of stuff going on here at The Holbeck to get stuck into. There’s the return of the How To Festival with fun for all the family, a raucous cabaret night programmed by the brilliant Eggs Collective, a special album launch concert from The Honeybirds with Tom Sharp Jazz Orchestra, excellent touring theatre shows and the return of the Cultural Community College. See what you fancy below and book your place in advance. As ever, you pay what you decide on the day after taking part. Come and get involved.

How To... Jump Over The Moon
Sat 19th Oct, 11-6pm

Our How To Festival is back! This time it’s themed around outer space and with puppetry, live music and an outdoor adventure there’s something for all the family.

We’d love you to come down and take part in one or more of these activities, or even better stay for the whole day! We’ll put on some sandwiches for lunch at 12noon and at 5pm we’ll all come together for a big family friendly pop concert by The Neptunes! Everything is You Pay What You Decide after you take part.

At 11am Music Workshop for 3 – 7yr olds with The Neptunes

As well as being an awesome band, The Neptunes love to create a nurturing music experience with children and young people. During this workshop they will guide you through singing in harmony and getting some beats going with some basic percussion.

At 1pm Goblin Theatre presents Hey Diddle Diddle! for children aged 3+

Ever wondered how a cow jumped over the moon? Or why the dish ran away with the spoon? With original songs played live on stage, brilliant puppetry and lots of laughter, this new show is a wild and musical celebration about the importance of imagination.

At 2.15pm Manic Chord present The Unknown for children aged 7+

You’re invited to go on an adventure with Leeds theatre company Manic Chord in their new 80’s inspired extra-terrestrial experience: The Unknown. Amber, a tech savvy teen and her rather more traditional grandmother, Dawn, are onto something supernatural. With fellow members of the Society for Speculation, can the daring duo get to the bottom of these gravitational goings on?

At 4pm Alien Antics workshop for children aged 7+

In this imaginative workshop with the makers of The Unknown you’ll play games, tell stories and create your own alien adventure.

At 5pm The Neptunes: Family Concert

Come and join us for a family-friendly pop concert on The Holbeck main stage. Our amazing house band The Neptunes will get you and the kids singing and dancing along with a set of popular and original songs.

Also on Saturday 19 October at 19:30 we welcome back the brilliant Ugly Bucket, winners of The Holbeck Cup at the National Student Drama Festival for a work-in-progress performance of their newest show, Good Grief. Ugly Bucket process the death of a friend in the only way they know how; through a high energy maelstrom of clowning, slapstick, verbatim, and thumping techno tracks. Tickets to be released soon - keep an eye out for a newsletter update!

Lady Members  -  A Cabaret
Sat 5th Oct, Doors at 7pm

There is just a handful of tickets left for our second big cabaret night. On the 60th anniversary of women being welcomed into the country’s oldest working men’s club there’ll be live music, comedy, performance art anarchy, dancing and a delicious dinner from the Spicy Biker. Make sure you reserve your pay what you decide tickets in advance; our last Cabaret Night in March was a sell-out!
Hosted by Eggs Collective with guests including; House of Ghetto, Jackie Hagan, Theresa Dismay, Sh!t Theatre & DJ MRSBAXTER2U.

Car Park King
Sun 27
th Oct, 5pm

Described by The British Theatre Guide as ‘Horrible Histories for grown-ups’, during its phenomenal sell-out shows in 2017,  ‘Car Park King’ is an original comedy play about one of the most controversial Kings of England, Richard III.
Add a drop of Monty Python, a dash of Blackadder and a sprinkle of Spike Milligan and you have a side- splitting, bizarre, unmissable comedy that is ‘Car Park King.’

BIG IDEAS

As part of the Cultural Community College, our Big Ideas series is all about inspirational people discussing their passion projects. There are two fantastic Big Ideas sessions in October.
Being An End Of Life Doula
Sunday 13th at 5pm
Rebecca Kenyon and Mandy Kazmierski will be here to talk about Being An End Of Life Doula, which mirrors the role of a birth Doula but instead of supporting the arrival of new life, they are present as someone is dying. We’ll also be screening Rebecca’s award-winning documentary ‘Holding Space’.

A Cosmic Story
Sunday 20th at 5pm
Jane Riddiford from Global Generation will be here to tell us the massive, evolving, scientific story of where we all came from.

Other News:

Make sure you save the date for our annual Christmas Fayre which is back on Saturday 14th December 12:00-16:00.
It’ll be our first Christmas Fayre at The Holbeck and if you would like to host a stall for free please get in touch with us via blakey@slunglow.org
As is tradition there will be pay what you decide hog roast and delicious vegan food, mulled wine, storytelling, music and more!

We’re also planning a special Boxing Day Quiz this year - more to be revealed!

The Holbeck is open for a drink, including a new real ale each week, on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings, all day Sunday when there’s members games like Bingo, Play Your Cards Right and a Quiz, and from 2 hours before every Leeds United home game. And while we’d love you all to become members of the club, you don’t have to be a member to come down and join us for a drink. All are welcome!

We look forward to welcoming you soon.

What's On in London?

Frieze London & Frieze Masters

Frieze London is back for its 17th edition, showcasing 160 galleries from 36 countries around the world. It’s an opportunity for visitors to discover the world’s most exciting artists and curators, from the emerging to the iconic. Be sure to check out this year’s new themed section Woven, curated by Cosmin Costinas, writer, critic and Executive Director of Para Site (Hong Kong).

Frieze Masters runs in conjunction with this, but while Frieze London focuses on contemporary art, Frieze Masters showcases work made before the year 2000. New this year is the fair’s Spotlight section, featuring presentations from 20th century artists across painting, photography, sculpture, drawing and conceptual installations. We’ll be seeing work from pioneering New York figures like Ming Smith – the first African American female photographer to have her work acquired by the Museum of Modern Art – and Gordon Parks’ expressions of the Black American experience from 1940-70.
3-6 October.

London Cocktail Week

London Cocktail Week returns to the city this Friday, with over 300 bars coming together to celebrate the capital’s mixology scene. It’s running for an extended 10 days this year in celebration of its 10th birthday, with pop-ups, parties and collaborations taking place across the city. The festival’s epicentre is The Cocktail Village in Brick Lane, where over 40 bars will be serving up drinks priced at just £6 alongside plenty of food from Street Feast. Another key spot is Covent Garden, where a week-long pop-up offers visitors daily tastings and all sorts of cocktail-based fun. Visit drinkup.london for a full schedule of events.
4-13 October.

Decorex International

Europe’s leading event for interior design professionals, Decorex International is a four-day show which presents next-level interior design from around the world, showcasing products, projects and perspectives – and the people who create them. Guests are invited to source design inspiration, chart the direction of the industry, commission bespoke furniture and check out a 400-strong exhibition of newly launched products. This year Decorex will be introducing an exciting new feature: Design Encounter, a unique series of interconnecting spaces created between architect John Allsopp (@johnallsoppstudio) and six innovative and acclaimed interior designers including Natalia Miyar Atelier and Rose Murray. View the designers taking part here.
 6-9 October.

After restaurant Metta shut its doors, it left space for a new beginning. A pioneer in dining, Rhodora has taken up the space. Along with delicious farm fresh food, diners can sip different cocktails, brews, assorted tea, kombucha and of course, wine.
Transit System Revamp
New buses, subway carts and a modernized subway system are coming to the city. The MTA's slow, problematic and meddlesome signal system is being improved in hopes of giving New Yorkers a faster commute.

Nearly 70 stations will be deemed ADA-Compliant by the completion of the new plan as well.
Cleaning up the Menu
Public schools that provide breakfast and lunch to students are making big changes. The New York City Council is cracking the whip on cafeterias.
Resolution 238 is banning processed meats on school menus. The change will prohibit items such as bologna, bacon, pepperoni, and salami.
