Exciting new plans for the southern side
of the city centre have been announced. Now in consultation, they could
see Call Lane pedestrianised to create two new public spaces and Meadow
Lane cut down to one carriageway to make way for the new City Park.

|
|
The Beck & Call is the latest
opening from the folk behind Belgrave Music Hall. This is so much more
than a gastropub and we're giving you the perfect opportunity to see why
– so get your entries in and see if you can bag a bang-up Sunday roast
for all the family.
|
|
Skin-on chips loaded with smoked
pancetta, pecorino, pickled chillies and more. Juicy okra fries coated
in chickpea batter. Proper chippy chips smothered in salt and
vinegar, or if you prefer, gravy. Leeds has potatoey goodness covered and
so do we – start working your way through this mouthwatering list.

The wait is over! Sarto, the new
collaboration between Laynes and The Brunswick, has opened. Now you can
get fresh pasta, smothered in locally-sourced ingredients and
homemade sauces, at their new restaurant in the former Ipsum Vinoteca.
Couple it with craft beer from the bar or one of their handpicked wines,
and job's a good 'un.

|
Harewood House will come to life this
Christmas as they welcome you into a magical world of gossiping statues,
singing plates and moving paintings. And you can see it for yourself
because we're giving you the chance to win a festive wire stag head
workshop and a weekend of fun when their festive market arrives.

Northern
Short Story Festival presents an afternoon of chilling horror with
a folk-horror flavour. Join featured readers Shirley Jackson Award
winning author Alison Littlewood (Best of British Horror), and Dead
Ink author Lucie McKnight Hardy (Best of British Short Stories),
for an afternoon of horror stories that will stun, scare, and startle!
This event will be held in The Leeds Library (on Commercial St NOT
Central Library) which was founded in 1768, and is the oldest
surviving example of a membership subscription library in the
British Isles. Legend says the Library is haunted by a former
Librarian, Vincent Sternberg who still browses the stacks at night,
along with other ghostly apparitions. We cannot promise sight of
these during your visit but you might feel a chill or two as you
wander around the Library.
Limited Open Mic slots are available for your own stories. To book
one of these from Tuesday 1st October, email northernshortstoryfestival@gmail.com.
All stories must be under 5 minutes long. Halloween fancy dress
encouraged, with prizes!
Tickets are £6 + Eventbrite booking fee and can be booked here. Doors at 3pm for a
3.30pm start. There will be a bar serving refreshments.
We are able to offer reduced price Horror Out Loud tickets on Oct
26th for people on benefits, on zero hours / PT hours, or anybody
on a low income. Please email us (northernshortstoryfestival@gmail.com)
if you would like one.
The
Northern Short Story Festival is part of Leeds Big Bookend,
and is supported by Arts@Leeds and Leeds City Council.

Returning for a third
year, Alnwick Castle is allowing a limited number of brave visitors
within its walls, with the help of a guide, to hear tales of its
history after hours.
Was that a dim figure flitting in the darkness or just a shadow of
the imagination? Did you feel a soft stroke on your face, or
was it a cobweb? Feel and hear the anguish of the restless souls
who lived within the walls of Alnwick Castle centuries ago as you
explore parts of the castle not usually seen by visitors.
Dare you explore the sinister secrets of this most mysterious
medieval castle in the dark? Beware – this evening outing is
not for the faint-hearted!

Plan Your Halloween
There
are plenty of ways to celebrate Halloween. Some agree that Halloween has it's
roots in the traditional pagan holiday Samhain. Some believe it marks the
moment when the spirit world is closest to the living world, and a prime time
to pay respect to the deceased.
If the NYC
Halloween Parade is not your cup of tea, don't fret. Bring your costumes and
face paint over to one of these other fun events that kick off the day the
right way.
|
Purpose of Disguise
Yes,
we'd all like to dress up as our favorite superhero or villain for one day
but why else do crowds parade around in disguises? Our customs are never as
simple as we are led to believe and Halloween is no exception. If you were
ever confused as to why we wear costumes and masks, look no further.
The combination of
different traditions and practices have birthed today's well know holidays
and Halloween is a prime example.
