More Tariffs, More Audible, More Hunger Games
In a new round of Trump administration tariffs on E.U. goods, books coming to the U.S. from the U.K. and Germany will be subjected to a 25% tariff effective October 18. In the ongoing Audible case, Judge Valerie Caproni has denied the company's request for settlement talks. A new Hunger Games novel's title and cover have been revealed, while at New York Comic Con, Abrams has unveiled a new LGBTQ graphic imprint. The former National Enquirer editor has threatened booksellers in an attempt to deaden the effect of a forthcoming Ronan Farrow book, the Daily Beast reports, while Bob Woodward has taken flack for his interview of the authors of She Said at a book event filled with audience heckling. And rare books geeks will be thrilled to know, Electric Literature reports, that a copy of America’s first banned book is for sale...if you have $35,000.

Chloe Schwenke Out at AWP
Less than six months after being named the Association of Writers and Writing Programs' executive director, Chloe Schwenke is out. ‘The Testaments' got off to a fast start following its Tuesday release. Bookstores could use a hot title as bookstore sales fell again in July.

Deputy chief executive of the Publishers Association Emma House is leaving after 10 years with the organization. Also across the pond, a political correspondent writes that Brexit could threaten the publishing industry in the U.K. as proposed immigration policies have an impact on the country's creativity and culture. Authors and other readers are moving to ban a fundamentalist text that supports child abuse from being sold on Amazon.

Another Amazon Complaint This Week
Bibliotheca has called out Amazon for meddling in the library e-book market, just the latest complaint against the e-tail giant following Monday's AAP lawsuit over Audible's Captions program. At Baen Books and RBmedia, a partnership is in the works in which the two publishers will collaborate on audiobook publishing. Bill Simmons's website the Ringer has teamed up with Grand Central on a publishing deal, the Hollywood Reporter reports, while Welsh bookseller Richard Booth, the self-crowned king of used books, has died at 80.

The Scrap Over Captions Continues
The Association of American Publishers is leading publishers into a new scuffle with Amazon, whose Audible arm is getting sued for alleged copyright infringement over its Captions program. Speaking of which, what's the difference between print books and audiobooks? The distinction may be a big one in the market, but neuroscientifically, there is none. Overseas, the Beijing Book Fair wraps up, while in Uganda, a new generation of writers is breathing fresh life into the country's literature, the Economist reports. In Ray Bradbury's Illinois hometown, a statue of the sci-fi great has been erected, and in Brooklyn's Gowanus neighborhood, a home for indie publishers is expanding. And for the Washington Post, N.K. Jemisin, Jasmine Guillory, and Lauren Wilkinson discuss publishing's white male hierarchy.

Bookstores Galore
Lots going on in the bookstore world today, with two bookstores adding new locations and a Detroit indie getting a new life. In the children's world, a new initiative has been launched to collect books for young tornado victims, and Random House's Cathy Goldsmith weighs in on a newly discovered book by Dr. Seuss, which will be published September 3. Christopher Kimball and America’s Test Kitchen have settled their lawsuit, the New York Times reports, while ProPublica digs into how Trump’s tariffs, which allow bibles but ban textbooks, are questionable in their criteria. And at the New Republic, a client of literary agency Brockman Inc. investigates John Brockman's ties with Jeffrey Epstein.

Welcome to Beijing
The Beijing Book Fair has begun, and with it comes a bevy of digital and children's content. Tuesday marked the publication date of the debut collection by poet and sexual assault recovery educator Olivia Gatwood, who spoke with PW about the book and writing about sexual trauma. And across the internet, books on insects and rock 'n' roll get their due this week—as do some of the favorite reads of director David Lynch.

Regan Returns
Judith Regan is back with a controversial new book deal that has prompted questions from the book business and beyond. A letter sent earlier this month by three Democratic senators is questioning the ethical ramifications of educational publishers' data collection practices. And at PW, Rose Fox gets a promotion and David Adams and Phoebe Cramer join the reviews team. In celebratory news, awards season is starting back up again: Tommy Orange has won the American Book Award, while in Germany, the German Book Prize has released its longlist. And today in George R.R. Martin, the Song of Ice and Fire author has half-heartedly promised better turnaround time on The Winds of Winter now that Game of Thrones isn't derailing his writing process, and has also, NBC Chicago reports, put his Windy City home up for sale.

Senators Question Educational Publishers’ Data Collection Practices
An August 12 letter, signed by Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL), Ed Markey (D-MA), and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) raised concerns that the data harvested and maintained by digital educational publishers today “could pose a serious risk to students, parents, and educational institutions" if "stolen, collected, or sold without their permission or knowledge.” more »
