More Tariffs, More Audible, More Hunger Games
In a new round of Trump administration tariffs on E.U. goods,
books coming to the U.S. from the U.K. and Germany will be subjected
to a 25% tariff effective October 18. In the ongoing Audible case,
Judge Valerie Caproni has denied the
company's request for settlement talks. A new Hunger Games novel's
title and
cover have been revealed, while at New York Comic Con, Abrams has
unveiled a new LGBTQ
graphic imprint. The former National Enquirer editor has
threatened booksellers in an attempt to deaden the effect of a forthcoming
Ronan Farrow book, the Daily Beast reports, while Bob
Woodward has taken flack for his interview of the authors of She Said
at a book event
filled with audience heckling. And rare books geeks will be
thrilled to know, Electric Literature reports, that a copy of
America’s first banned book is for sale...if you have
$35,000.

Chloe Schwenke Out at AWP
Less than six months after being named the Association of
Writers and Writing Programs' executive director, Chloe Schwenke
is out. ‘The Testaments' got off to a
fast start following its Tuesday release. Bookstores could use a
hot title as bookstore
sales fell again in July.
Deputy chief executive of the Publishers Association Emma House is leaving after 10 years with the organization. Also across the pond, a political correspondent writes that Brexit could threaten the publishing industry in the U.K. as proposed immigration policies have an impact on the country's creativity and culture. Authors and other readers are moving to ban a fundamentalist text that supports child abuse from being sold on Amazon.

Big Day for Bookstore News
There's lots going on in the bookselling world today, with three
bookstores battling local
governments, a new San Diego store for Diesel, A
Bookstore in the works, and Writers' Workshoppe & Imprint
Books gaining some
new owners. In awards news, the 2019 Rona Jaffe Foundation

brushes with the U.K.'s biggest fiction prize. The Guardian has its
own list today cataloguing big books, from Animal Farm to Catch-22,
that were initially
rejected by publishers. And did you know that the public once
feared that library books
could spread disease? Smithsonian magazine investigates.

Another Amazon Complaint This Week
Bibliotheca has called out Amazon for meddling in
the library e-book market, just the latest complaint against the
e-tail giant following Monday's AAP lawsuit over Audible's Captions program.
At Baen Books and RBmedia, a partnership is
in the works in which the two publishers will collaborate on
audiobook publishing. Bill Simmons's website the Ringer has teamed up
with Grand Central on a publishing deal, the Hollywood Reporter
reports, while Welsh bookseller Richard Booth, the self-crowned king of used
books, has died at 80.
Bibliotheca Calls Out Amazon for Meddling in the
Library E-book Market
In a message sent to library customers, Tom Mercer, senior v-p of digital products for Bibliotheca, called out Amazon for its role in the increasingly contentious library e-book market. "As long as data is shared with Amazon by library users, Amazon will spin that data to create concern, and publishers will be forced to alter their digital library lending models or risk losing key authors.” more »
