5 Things to Do This Weekend

Wondering what to do this weekend? What's On by Country & Town House is here to help.

We bring you the hottest events and culture in the town and country this weekend – and it's a particularly special one, with Royal Wedding fever taking over the nation. Head to a royal garden party or afternoon tea to celebrate the nuptials in true British style, or avoid it entirely with copious amounts of wine and opera...

Enjoy!

 Wine & Opera

1. London Wine Week
An officially sanctioned excuse to ‘sample’ copious amounts of wine, London Wine Week is back with events across the city and festival Director Emma Murphy has given us her top picks. We're heading to the closing party to help Bedales of Borough clear the wines from their cellar ahead of a refurb. Until 20 May

2. Glyndebourne Festival
The hills are alive with the sound of music! The Glyndebourne Festival opens this weekend and delivers on all fronts with world-class opera and its setting in the rolling hills of the South Downs. Check out our guide to the best food on offer, as our festival guide is essential reading for first-timers.

3. The Royal Wedding

Royal Boat Ride

Gather 50 of your nearest and dearest and step on board a 100-year-old coal-fired steamboat to take you down the Thames during the wedding ceremony of the year. Dock at the Windsor Promenade to enjoy champagne and canapés fit for royalty…

Chelsea Physic Garden Party

London's oldest botanical garden will be celebrating the occasion with a garden party, complete with a best hat competition, royal mystery trail, special cocktails and food, and flower crowns – all while watching the nuptials on the outdoor screen.

Royal Afternoon Tea

Take a trip to Petersham Hotel for a royal revamp of the classic afternoon tea menu, with show-stopping pastries, typical British finger sandwiches, The Queen’s favourite cake, and a delicate lemon curd and raspberry tartlet  similar to the royal wedding cake.

C&TH Specials

4. Book It: 'The Business of Creativity' at Hay Festival
Can art and business coexist, or does a drive for profit lead to the end of creative integrity? This will be the central question of the C&TH talk at Hay Festival on 27 May, with Ed Vaizey, Theo Fennell, Linda Yueh, Laura Tenison MBE and Gaye Blake-Roberts.
Book your tickets here.

5. New Podcast Episode: Exploring North Devon
The new episode of the What’s On Podcast is out today, and this time we’re in North Devon to check out a section of the South West Coast Path, which is currently celebrating its 40th year. Many of us were spellbound watching Major Tim Peake's space adventure – from launch and arrival at the International Space Station in 2015, to his experiments, spacewalk and marathon during six months in orbit, and his thrilling return to Earth in June 2016.

Yesterday Tim Peake visited the National Museum of Scotland to mark the arrival at the museum of the actual 1.5 tonne Soyuz descent module that carried him safely home. Come and see this piece of space history for yourself and experience what it's like to be an astronaut with a thrilling virtual reality adventure.
