The principles of storytelling apply to comedy, just as they
do to any other genre. However, what makes comedy different to drama lies
in the mind of the writer. There are three foundations to the comic vision
of life:
|
1
|
The Comic Mind is an Idealist.
|
The dramatist fundamentally respects and admires humanity.
They tell stories that in essence say, 'under the worst of circumstances, human beings
are magnificent
creatures'.
|
The comedy writer believes that, 'under the best of circumstances, human beings
will find some way to mess
up'.
If you scratch the hide of a comedy writer, what you discover lurking
underneath is an idealist that wants the world to be perfect.
|
2
|
The Comic Mind is an Angry Mind.
|
However, when the comic looks around and sees the world as
it is, it aggravates her. Comedians are angry people. If you're skeptical,
try inviting some comedy writers over for dinner. Everyone in Hollywood has
made that mistake...but only once.
|
3
|
The Comic Mind is a Smart Mind.
|
The comedian knows that if you harangue people with how
awful the world is, no one will listen to you. But, if you can pull the
mask away from hypocrisy and greed, expose pretentiousness, stupidity, and
cruelty for what it is and get people to laugh at it, then maybe things
will balance out.
|
The comedy writer seeks out behaviors that have been
encrusted with vanity, greed and hypocrisy, and goes on the attack. Comedy, therefore, is the 'Angry
Art'.
|
|
"In comedy, laughter settles all
arguments."

Drama and comedy are fundamentally different forms. Though they
utilize many of the same story principles, they each strive to elicit very
different responses from their respective audiences.
On May
20th in London,
Robert McKee dissects the COMEDY
genre, analyzing its principles in unparalleled detail. This one-day seminar
is your opportunity to learn the form like never before. McKee also teaches
the principles of storytelling in his "legendary" STORY Seminar in
London (May 17th -
19th).
|
|
The following is transcribed from
Robert McKee's
COMEDY DAY Seminar:
|
Drama and comedy are fundamentally different forms. Though
they utilize many of the same story principles, they each strive to elicit
very different responses from their respective audiences.
|
Drama releases our compassion
and empathy for the suffering of our fellow human beings. Comedy asks us to
denounce false values, false behaviours, the stupidity, greed and folly of
humanity.
|
Drama concerns itself with the conflict within
human beings. Comedy focuses on social conduct, in the violation of good
sense and proper social behaviour.
|
Drama appeals to feelings and emotions deep
within the audience or reader, whilst comedy appeals to the intellect. It
takes brains to laugh.
|
Comedy Writers Attack.
|
All you have to do is look at the vocabulary of comedy to
understand the aggression of the genre - punchlines,
gags, gut busters. When a
comedian performs a good set? They killed
it. A bad set? They died.
|
Comedy is an attack
on social institutions and the conduct of society. The writers are asking
audiences to join them.

Each day, the professional understands, he will wake up facing
the same demons...and amateurism he has always faced. The difference now is
that he will not yield to those temptations. He will have mastered them, and
will continue to master them.
Why is McKee's STORY Seminar
A Rite of Passage
for Writers?
|
"Each day, the professional
understands, he will wake up facing the same demons...and amateurism he has
always faced. The difference now is that he will not yield to those
temptations. He will have mastered them, and will continue to master
them."
|
Steven Pressfield, TURNING PRO
|
The struggling writer dreams up an idea, then rushes
straight to the keyboard. He imagines and writes, writes and dreams until
he reaches page 120 and stops. He hands the manuscript to his agent, who
reluctantly fulfills their duty and forwards it to producers. Each come
back with the same comment, "PASS
ON IT". The writer declares the industry doesn't
understand his genius, and gears up for his next project.
|
The amateur writer believes that because they've seen
movies, they can write them. They don't take the time to learn from the the
greats and study the failures.
|
A professional masters the form first.
|
Robert McKee's STORY is the only seminar of its kind. The
only tutorial that will unlock the universal and timeless story form. The
only seminar that will elevate your writing to that of the masters. The
only seminar that will turn your mindset from one of the amateur, to that
of the professional.
