What's happening in the book world?

Congratulations to Irish author Mark O’Connell announced as winner of the 2018 Wellcome Book Prize for his "extraordinary debut" 'To Be a Machine: Adventures among cyborgs, utopians, hackers and the futurists solving the modest problem of death'.

Selected from a shortlist of six, he wins this prestigious £30,000 prize for the best work of fiction or non-fiction which "celebrates the many ways in which literature can illuminate the breadth and depth of our relationship with health, medicine and illness".

"This is a book that will start conversations and deepen debates. It is a wonderful winner of the Wellcome Book Prize," comments the Chairman of judges. Read more here https://wellcomebookprize.org/

The Publishers Association launched its blueprint for UK publishing at The London Book Fair in April, with 10 priorities for government to ensure that the UK retains its world-leading status after Brexit. The blueprint and the challenges and opportunities faced by the UK publishing industry after Brexit were debated at a panel discussion at The London Book Fair. Read more and download the blueprint here

Don't miss the SYP's 'Wider World of Publishing' Panel on 17 May, when panellists will be offering their perspectives on publishing and literary values. It's a great opportunity to discover how the rise of digital publishing, self-publishing and Brexit have affected the wider world of publishing. Visit their website to find out more and to book tickets.

e-Learning modules, for everyone in publishing

Our recently-launched portfolio of affordable, flexible e-learning modules has got off to a flying start. Aimed at those living outside London and in a low income bracket, the PTC wants to give anyone interested in publishing the chance to learn the basics and develop their skills.
See the full range of courses here

“Lifelong learning must now be a part of everyone’s career path. Whether you work at a large publishing house or an indie, run your own business or operate as a freelancer, in today’s job market, learning online can help you to remain competitive and attractive to future employees or clients without taking swathes of time out of your day job. We also believe at the PTC in the fundamental importance of expanding publishing’s workforce, and hope that these new online courses will play their part in enabling access for those who live outside London and the UK, and for those in low-income brackets.” Peter McKay, Chief Executive, The Publishing Training Centre

Maximise publisher sales with Metadata Power

Twenty-first century book readers are searching for, discovering and purchasing books via the internet instead of browsing the shelves of a library or bookstore. Whether digital or in print, their success in finding the right book dictates how well the book sells. And this success depends on metadata.

Discover how the power of metadata can maximise your sales with this half-day workshop on 20 June, developed jointly by Book Industry Communication (BIC) and EDItEUR. Don't miss out and book here

Meet a PTC tutor - Sarah Sodhi

Since 1999, Sarah Sodhi has proofed, tagged, bound, corrected, edited, managed, commissioned, subbed, scheduled, estimated and produced a great deal of content – from interactive, multi-media resources to marketing leaflets, from monthly magazines to 900-page medical tomes.

Starting her career at a small medical publisher in Oxford, Sarah produced medical textbooks, journals and a bi-monthly magazine before moving into the public sector to work for an adult education charity, introducing formal scheduling procedures, progress-chasing systems and detailed budgets. After this, she immersed herself in the education sector, editing and managing digital and print for educational publishers.

Sarah runs three two-day courses for the PTC:  Editorial Project Management, Introduction to Editorial Skills and Progress in Editorial Skills.

Professional and Peer Networks:

A practical approach

One-day course, 17 May

RESERVE YOUR PLACE TODAY

The wholesale adoption of digital services and social media has transformed the way in which readers can interact with publishers, authors and with each other. This represents an opportunity for publishers to interact with their market in new ways. What are the processes and skills associated with managing and sustaining successful networks and communities?

Learn how to:
  • Identify the opportunities, value and challenges for specialist, reference and non-fiction publishing associated with communities
  • Understand the nature of the communities and networks you serve
  • Learn and practise the skills associated with network and community moderation and facilitation
  • Create a community facilitation action plan
  • Start measuring your success

Who will benefit from this course?

Marketing and editorial staff in Scholarly, Professional and STM publishing organisations, responsible for managing networks and communities.

Those who are new to the process but whose organisation already manages networks and communities and anyone now tasked with adding network or community management to their existing portfolio of activities.

Here's what two previous course delegates had to say....

"Jonathan is an excellent discussion facilitator... he used a variety of media (handouts, videos, live demonstrations on the web) to introduce ideas and to show us how they can be applied. I was a bit worried that the day would feel very long, but it absolutely didn't - the amount of discussion, of things both specific to individuals in the group and more general on the topic, was really great. Jonathan is fantastic at extrapolating peoples' specific concerns/goals into something that can be useful for everyone - even me, who doesn't work in specialist or reference publishing and who doesn't manage a forum or portal for professionals!" Faber delegate, 2017

"It was a very useful course and made me realise the real opportunity to be had in this important area. I particularly gained from the mapping exercise, the strategic plan (which I will develop further) and the great facilitation tips."
Elsevier delegate, 2017

About the tutor
