Happy 40th birthday to us!

On 16 June 1983, we opened as the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television. 40 years and millions of visitors later, we're still here.

Our doors may be temporarily closed for our transformational redevelopment, but that isn't stopping us celebrating our big birthday online.

We wouldn't be here without your ongoing support, so thank you from everyone at the National Science and Media Museum.

Inspiring futures for 40 years

To celebrate our birthday, we asked visitors and colleagues to share their memories of the museum. You can watch our birthday film below - tissues may be required.

A family doing an activity

As we look back on our 40-year history, and ahead to playing our part in Bradford becoming the UK City of Culture in 2025, there has never been a more exciting time to donate to support our work.

Your support could go towards transforming the museum or towards helping us to bring science to life in communities in Bradford.

The museum’s doors may be closed but you can keep in touch with us by visiting Pictureville Cinema’

Show's Up: Alfie's First Fight
A funny and heartwarming family show that packs a punch!

If you are looking for a special Father’s Day treat, look no further!

Coming up this Sunday is a new show that takes place in a real boxing gym at The Training Cave, Batley.

‘A positive and gripping story for kids that captures the true drama of the boxing ring’ – Ricky Hatton MBE

Inspired by Oliver’s experiences growing up without a mum and being coached as an amateur boxer by his dad, Alfie’s First Fight is about shy twelve-year-old Alfie, as he decides to go in search of his missing older brother, and learning how to fight for what you want.

All our shows are relaxed and friendly so come and try a new experience - it’s only £1.50 per child, and adults go free!

Sunday 18 June, 2pm and 4pm

Join in Bodies of Water
Our performance protest piece needs you!

Devised and led by Delia Stevens, percussionist, our Open Space 70 Bodies of Water project seeks people who are concerned about water pollution, can keep a beat and want to make some noise about the state of our rivers.

Did you know that in the UK no river is currently safe to swin in due to pollution?
In 2022, the Calder River was reported as the UK's second most polluted river.
We think this is unacceptable.

Amplify your voice, create a splash and make some noise! It's time to use the power of music to start a movement. It's not too late to reclaim our rivers.

Join percussionist, composer and producer Delia Stevens as part of a small ensemble of people who want to be able to use our local waterways safely.

Help to create sound pieces and soundscapes over two Tuesday evening workshops, to be performed as part of our Open Space 70 festival in the Town Hall on Sunday 16 July (you'll be needed from 9am to 1pm on this day).

We have other ensembles and professional musicians engaged in this performance which promises to be a memorable day.

This short course is suitable for those age 16+
Workshops: Tues 20 & 27 June, 7-9pm
Rehearsal: Sun 16 July 9-10am
Performances: Sun 16 July 10.30am and 12.30pm

All sessions take place at the Town Hall, Hebden Bridge, HX7 7BY which is an accessible venue.  Book your place to be part of this project now:
