Sweet Sixteen @ Seven


In a couple of weeks on Friday 7th July, it's Seven's 16th birthday To celebrate we’ve live music from local jazz legends, saxophonist, Brendan Duffy and singer, Jenny Hammond at 6pm, followed later by the brilliant Mik Artistik and multi-talented guitarist, Jonny Flockton, both fresh from Glastonbury. Not to be missed - put it in your diary now.

As always, there is much to look forward to before 7th July. The second of our Summer Saturdays 4-6pm on Saturday 24th June, features four-piece folk band, Spinning Wheel. Seven Courtyard PWYF. Also on Saturday 24th June, 7.30pm, Lamin African Roots Band – ‘Fusion’ plays a unique blend of music styles and rhythms from Reggae, Afrobeat, Soca, Latin and Salsa beats. £12 / £10 conc. Seven venue.

The Songs of Stephen Schwartz and Alan Menken on Sunday 25th June is a SOLD OUT event, but also on Sunday 25th June, 7pm, the Seven Quiz,  this and every Sunday, is a great way to stretch those little grey cells and compete in a friendly atmosphere with friends and family. £5 / team. Seven Bar. With prizes.

Next week, on Wednesday 28th June, 7.30pm, another outing for the ever-popular Silky & Friends with Rich Wilson, award winning comedian, podcaster and natty dresser. Plus, Zoe, dog obsessed eccentric outsider with limited social skill plus up & coming comedians and Silky as host of course. £12 /£10 conc.

Leeds Actors in Training - Method & Material on Thursday 29th June 8pm presents a relaxed sharing of the material they’ve been working on over the past year with snippets of speeches, physical theatre, music and improvisation. £5.

On Friday 30th June 7.30pm, look forward to the return of Tim & Simon, two affable middle-aged music-lovers whose usp is that they devise inoffensive arrangements of their favourite classic songs for piano, guitar and two passable voices. Seven Courtyard - Seven Bar if wet. PWYF.

Also on Friday 30th June, 8pm, South Asian Arts UK - Sarangi Legacy: An Evening of 100 Musical Colours. Haunting, rich, and said to resemble the nuances of the human voice, the sarangi can be anything and everything all at once. £10. Under 30 & students £6.

Pink Peg Slax is the band for Summer Saturday on 1st July 4-6pm. this anarchic original rockabilly trio was beloved by the late John Peel. They’ve been bopping since 1980! Seven Courtyard.  Bar in event of bad weather. PWYF.

Also on Saturday 1st July, Leeds Flamenco Festival 2023 Opening Night Flamenco de Leeds – Rebeca Ortega Flamenco with guitarist, Ramon Ruiz and singer, Natalia Marin .  Doors 7pm. £20. The Festival continues with Flamenco de Leeds – Jose del Tomate on Friday 7th July and Saturday 8th July with Flamenco de Leeds – Community Day Performances

On Sunday 2nd July 1.30-4pm, the JazzLeeds – Nicki Allan Quintet will definitely pack an exhilarating and mighty punch with a selection of original songs and driving new arrangements. £12 / £10 conc.

Jazz again on Wednesday 5th July, 6-7.15pm Rush Hour Jazz – Jon Taylor. Saxophonist, flautist, vocalist, Jon aims to keep it ‘interesting, stimulating and create a little bit of joy!’ Also, on Wednesday 5th July 7.30pm  Murder Inc. – A Bug’s Death. This month grab your detective team and come solve a comedy murder mystery set in the insect world. £10.

On Thursday 6th July 7.30pm, Antimatter Productions – Moth. Spanning the years before, during and after an apocalypse, “Moth” is a science fiction play about space, time, memory and music. £6 / £4 conc

One week to go until Beyond the Little Black Dress

 

There’s only one week to go until our new exhibition, Beyond the Little Black Dress, opens at the National Museum of Scotland on Saturday 1 July.

From design classics to cutting-edge catwalk creations, Beyond the Little Black Dress deconstructs this iconic garment and examines the radical power of the colour black in fashion.

Featuring over 60 garments, the exhibition charts a century of fashion through a series of themed, immersive displays. See early 20th century pieces by Dior and Jean Muir alongside contemporary looks by designers such as Gareth Pugh, Comme des Garçons and ground-breaking Black British designers like Maximilian.
