LIFF PRESENTS: WHATS ON

LIFF PRESENTS WITH LEEDS QUEER FILM FESTIVAL: JOYLAND

Wednesday 15 February  /  Vue in the Light

An audience favourite at LIFF 2022 and presented in an extra preview with Leeds Queer Film Festival, Saim Sadiq’s dazzling debut feature is a bittersweet tale of repressed desire and the quest for individual freedom. When Haider secretly becomes a backing dancer for an erotic dance cabaret and falls for glamourous trans starlet Biba, family ties begin to strain. Joyland is released in UK cinemas on 24 February.

LIFF PRESENTS: BROKER + RECORDED Q&A WITH HIROKAZU KORE-EDA

Tuesday 21 February  /  Vue in the Light

A poster for the film Broker, showing six square illustrated images of different locations on a roadtrip.

Like Joyland, Broker was an audience favourite at LIFF 2022, and we had many requests for a repeat. Not only are we screening Broker again, but our preview also includes a specially recorded Q&A with director Hirokazu Kore-eda. The heartwarming, funny and moving film follows two brokers who sell orphaned infants to affluent couples who can't have children of their own. Broker is released in UK cinemas on 24 February.

LIFF PRESENTS: GETTING IT BACK - THE STORY OF CYMANDE

Wednesday 22 February  /  Vue in the Light

An essential new music documentary about the band Cymande, one of the truly great bands of the ‘70s and unsung heroes of Black British music, combining influences from funk, soul, and jazz to unique effect. Disbanding after only three albums, they were largely forgotten, only to be rediscovered by a hugely enthusiastic new audience in the hip hop generation. The film movingly documents their triumphant return.

An old black and white image of the band Cymande - several young men stand around, stylishly dressed in 70's clothing.

LIFF PRESENTS: ANGRY ANNIE

Wednesday 1 March  /  Vue in the Light

A woman cycles in the middle of a small road, surrounded by fields, looking at something in the distance.

Still from Angry Annie

Screening as part of Women’s History Month in March, Blandine Lenoir’s Angry Annie is a vivid period piece set in the French countryside in 1974, and a warm and inspiring film about female solidarity. The film features a superb and empathetic central performance by Laure Calamy (Call My Agent!) as Annie, a working mother of two teenagers who, after accidentally becoming pregnant, joins a movement to legalise abortions.

OTHER Films & EVENTS

HYDE PARK PICTURE HOUSE - WINGS OF DESIRE

Tuesday 14 February / City Varieties Music Hall

A black and white still from a film where a man in a suit sits on top of a large metal angel.

Still from Wings of Desire

Hyde Park Picture House presents the classic 1987 romance film, Wings of Desire. Damiel is an angel perched high above Berlin, who can hear the thoughts, fears, hopes and dreams of all the people living below. Unexpectedly, he falls in love with lonely trapeze artist named Marion and starts to desire a life in the physical world. Made within two years before the fall of the Berlin wall, this stunning tapestry of sounds and images, shot in black and white and colour by the legendary Henri Alekan, is pure movie poetry and a perfectly wistful film to enjoy on Valentine’s Day.

PRIDE

Wednesday 22 February / Pictureville Cinema

Pictureville Cinema at the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford is showing Pride from 2014 to celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month. A heart-warming retelling of inspiring true events during the 1984 miners' strike, the story follows a group of London gay and lesbian activists who band together to support the miners. Starring Bill Nighy, Andrew Scott and Imelda Staunton, Pride won a BAFTA for the best British debut feature for filmmaker Matthew Warchus.

FILMS AT HOWARD ASSEMBLY ROOM

Saturday 11 February / Friday 24 February

A somber young girl with white paint on her cheeks, fake long animal ears and a ceremonial robe around her neck.

Still from I Am Not A Witch

A popular venue at LIFF 2022, Howard Assembly Room is showing two films this month. On 11 February you can see the classic 1957 Hollywood romance An Affair to Remember starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. On 24 February you can see I Am Not a Witch, a BAFTA-winning and strikingly original debut by Zambian-born director Rungano Nyoni. 8-year old orphan Shula is denounced as a witch and exiled to a witch camp run by a corrupt government official. I Am Not a Witch masterfully combines deadpan comedy, tragedy, and vivid visuals.

Music from Manchester Collective, cellist Abel Selaocoe, pianist Boris Giltburg and a brand new string quartet series.

Leeds International Concert Season logo

Step into a dreamlike world of dark forests, folk tales and redemption this weekend with sought after chamber ensemble Manchester Collective. The musicians present Bag of Bones - a world premiere at Slung Low's brand new venue, The Warehouse In Holbeck.

Later this month we welcome multi-prize-winning pianist Boris Giltburg who explores the works of Maurice Ravel, Sergei Prokofiev and Frederic Chopin, and cellist Abel Selaocoe with Chesaba - the sensational trio founded in 2016, for genre-defying improvisations and celebratory musical fusion.

We're also thrilled to announce the return of our String Quartet Residency for the first time since 2019. The Leonkoro Quartet swept the board at last year's Wigmore Hall String Quartet Competition, winning first prize and nine of the twelve special prizes on offer. We're delighted to welcome them as our Quartet in Residence for the next three years, and hope you'll enjoy getting to know them as much as we have.

See you at a concert soon,
Leeds International Concert Season

Manchester Collective: Bag of Bones

A heady brew of dark Central European folklore and romantic song cycles with a pinch of jazz. Bag of Bones is a deeply personal piece of musical theatre by multi-instrumentalist Alice Zawadzki for Manchester Collective. Alice leads an unlikely ensemble of keys, accordion and strings, as she grapples with the cultural history and inherited stories from her Polish roots. This is new music at its most thrilling and cathartic.

Sat 11 February, 7.30pm
The Warehouse In Holbeck

Boris Giltburg

Described as “one of the most fully-rounded pianists of today”, Israeli pianist Boris Giltburg enjoys a career that has taken him to all the great musical centres of the world. In this programme he contrasts the deep poetry and romanticism of Chopin’s Ballades with Prokofiev’s colourful suite from his ballet Romeo and Juliet and the brilliantly impressionistic Gaspard de la Nuit by Ravel.

The Venue, Leeds Conservatoire

Chesaba

South African cellist Abel Selaocoe is one of the outstanding artists of our time, a true virtuoso who moves seamlessly across a plethora of genres and styles, redefining the parameters of the cello. His music-making highlights the links between Western and non-Western musical traditions, and here he's joined by Chesaba, the electrifying trio of African celebration, as they explore music influenced by classical, jazz and African traditions.

The trip was well planned and well executed. It was beautiful! The thing I was most amazed about and most appreciative of was the "wilderness" aspect. We hiked without trails and without seeing other hikers. You really felt like it was just you and nature. Spectacular!!
