Hello.
Welcome to our Getting involved bulletin for February. We're here
to help everyone take part in community activities and to help you
get involved in making your local place even better.
Did you
know that, for the first time, voters across the country will need
to show photographic ID when voting at polling stations during this
year’s local elections? Make sure you're ready to vote on Thursday
4 May by checking you have an accepted form of ID. If not, you can apply for free photo ID
online now.
Best
wishes, from the Democracy teams at Kirklees Council

Whether
you want to volunteer on a regular basis or now and again, there
are plenty of volunteer opportunities promoted by our partners at TSL Kirklees.
View the latest opportunities or use the search options to find
your ideal role. There are also opportunities to apply for jobs
working for local charities.
Notwestminster is an
annual volunteer-led event for everyone who is up for the challenge
of making our local democracy better, wherever we are. The free
event on Saturday 18 February features inspiring Lightning talks including
Andy Petrie from Local Services 2 You & TSL Kirklees, talking
about Community Power. Workshops include
creative activities, ways of growing trust between citizens and
councils, the voter journey for young people, and lots of practical
ideas for involving citizens in decision making.
Gwennie’s Getaways, is committed
to providing short-term breaks to those with Alzheimer’s and other
types of dementia and their family or carers. Closer to home, they
also run a Memory Café in different places throughout each month.
Gwennie’s Getaways are part of Ruddis Retreat.
As
part of our commitment to make sure everything we do is Shaped by People
in our local places, we're talking with citizens about what helps
you to get involved. Chrissie told us how being encouraged and
supported by Lisa (from community anchor organisation Local
Services 2 You) helped to grow her idea for a community allotment
into a flourishing space that benefits local people.

Get ready for an unmissable
concert
Join
the Orchestra of Opera North on Thursday 9 February at Huddersfield Town Hall
for the next performance in the Kirklees Concert Season.
The
Orchestra is joined by Mexican-American violinist Elena Urioste for
Elgar's Violin Concerto. One of his most enduring mysteries, the
dedication on the front page was left unfinished, leaving us to
speculate who inspired this stunning piece...
Completing
the programme, Opera North Music Director Garry Walker conducts
Nielsen's humorous Second Symphony and Sally Beamish's The Day
Dawn, based on a Shetland fiddle tune. Listen to the music ahead of
the concert with this specially crafted playlist.
Meet Elena Urioste
Elena
Urioste first appeared as soloist at the age of 13, with the
Philadelphia Orchestra. Since then she has given many acclaimed
performances with leading orchestras including the New York
Philharmonic, and co-founded the Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective.
Pre-concert talk
Join
Garry Walker (Opera North Music Director), Phil Boughton (Opera
North Director of Orchestra and Chorus), Elena Urioste (soloist)
and Peter Longworth (Minute Masterpiece composer) from
6.40pm to discover more about the programme. Free to all ticket
holders.

Crackdown
on Blue Badge Misuse
Displaying
a Blue Badge illegally is a crime and takes away spaces from those
genuinely in need. Every case our teams took to court last year
resulted in a conviction with almost £12k in fines handed out.
Of Time
and Place exhibition opening
Our
special exhibition, Of Time and Place opens at Huddersfield Art gallery
on 10 February! The free exhibition celebrates Huddersfield and our
other amazing surrounding areas: culture, language, landscape,

Life-saving
defibrillator for Oakwell Hall and Country Park ❤️
A huge thank you to The Friends of Oakwell Hall group
who have donated a defibrillator to Oakwell Hall and Country Park.
The £1200 needed to buy the lifesaving equipment was
raised by the volunteers running a tea stall at the weekly Oakwell
Park Run.
This lifesaving equipment gives a high energy
electric shock to the heart of someone who is in cardiac arrest.
The device is an essential part in trying to save the life of
someone who’s in cardiac arrest.
