Library Adventures - 8th February 2023

Sharing a book with a child is fun!

Mum and son reading together in child's room

This week is Children's Mental Health Week and we're recommending reading more to our children. It's a time for closeness, laughing and talking together – and it can also give children a flying start in life and help them become lifelong readers. We all hope our children will become readers and experience the relaxation, wellbeing and huge benefits around attainment that reading for pleasure brings. And we can make it happen!

Gavin's very first book, The Magic Tree and other stories, was published in 1979. Since then, she has gone on to pen several modern classics, including The Wheel of Surya, recently republished to mark the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence, and Coram Boy, the winner of the Whitbread Children's Book Award 2000. Looking forward to... World Book Day

Save the date! Thursday 2nd March 2023

With a programme of exciting events, brand new activities for home, school and libraries and a fantastic line-up of £1 books, World Book Day 2023 is shaping up to be the best ever!

Many children will be getting excited about wearing something other than school uniform for World Book Day. But some local schools are encouraging their students not to wear fancy dress, but onesies or pyjamas instead. They say that this is to help their students focus on the main point of the day - books!

Why pyjamas over a costume? Read more on the BBC Newsround website

eAudio, eBooks and apps

Image of phones with Libby and Overdrive app showing - text says, Still using Overdrive? Switch to Libby

The OverDrive app will soon be discontinued, and you’ll need to switch to Libby, OverDrive’s newer reading app. You can still use the older OverDrive app for now, but we recommend upgrading to Libby today. It’s easy to use and full of fun features.

There is an Overview page about the transition to Libby, which includes the 'Why' this change is happening, the 'How' to switch to Libby and some useful frequently asked questions.

"Kindle Fire devices: Amazon has not yet accepted our submission of the Libby app to the Amazon Appstore so the OverDrive app will remain available for Kindle Fire users to download and access until further notice"

Questions? Need some advice? Please drop us a line at frontline.services@kirklees.gov.uk or ask at any Kirklees Library.
