The Arts Society, Halifax presents – Sophie Matthews – Music in Art

So many of our historical references for musical instruments can be found in works of art. Not only can these windows into the past show us what the instruments looked like but also the social context in which they would have been played. Music and different instruments also play a strong role within symbolism in art. Sophie explores the instruments in selected works and then gives live demonstrations on replicas of the instruments depicted.

A hugely engaging stage presence, his soaring vocal, powerhouse guitar and bouzouki playing and masterful arrangements of traditional songs and contemporary covers have enthralled audiences from the largest festival main stages to the most intimate folk clubs. Following on from his critically acclaimed second album Gold of Scar & Shale, 2022 will see the release of a brand new EP, with 2023 bringing the successor to Gold of Scar & Shale in the form of a new album of traditional songs.

How To Be A Better Human Saturday 11th March

In 2019…I lost my Dad. Well, I didn’t lose him. I knew exactly where he was – in the coffin at the front of the crem. How to Be a Better Human is a spoken word comedy about grief, loss and self-acceptance. It tells Chris’ story of losing two of the biggest relationships in his life – Dad and Wife – in the space of a few months. It finds the lightness and humour in death, loss and divorce, exploring how they help us become better at empathising, connecting and understanding. How we can lose everything and still find the strength to rebuild. How growing a beard can be the best decision of your life, and why some hedgehogs are absolute d*******s.

Performed by Chris Singleton and directed by Tom Wright, How to Be A Better Human uses PowerPoint comedy, poetry, autobiographical storytelling, original music by Reece Jacob and animation by Huckleberry Films to open accessible conversations about grief, loss and mental health.

“A true artistic vulnerability that absolutely chimed with our audience.” – Rio Matchett, Leeds Playhouse

“A superb and slick debut. A son’s touching eulogy to his dad. A man bettering himself in the face of adversity. A surprisingly hilarious top night out.”- Porl Cooper, Harrogate Theatres

“There are autobiographical shows that ask ‘why me?’, and shows that ask ‘what can we learn from this?’ It is clear which one this is.” – Richard Warburton, Artistic Director of Theatre in the Mill

“It’s the humanity of Chris’ writing that compels you: candid, unafraid, harrowing, startling and compassionate in all the best ways, pulled together with a clarity of vision and beauty of language that simply will not let you go.” – Dawn Bauling, Indigo Dreams

“You make grief accessible to the masses.” – Audience member

Bootleg Blondie

Saturday 18th March

Bootleg Blondie are the world’s NUMBER 1 tribute to Debbie Harry and Blondie, established in 2001.

This band are the only tribute to have performed with two original founder members of Blondie, legendary drummer Clem Burke and singer, songwriter, bass player and author Gary Valentine. BB had the honour of being thanked on Blondie’s 11th album ‘Pollinator’ and have performed at the infamous CBGB club in New York city, appearing regularly at many top festivals and venues in The UK and Europe. Lead singer Debbie Harris (as seen on BBC 1) says her pride and joy is her guitar that she plays during her shows, signed by all the Blondie members.

To celebrate 45 years since the release of Blondie’s iconic 1978 album ‘Parallel Lines’ Clem Burke joined BB on drums for not one but two UK tours in 2019 covering nearly 5000 miles and playing to over 7000 people.

China Crisis Friday 14th April

By arrangement with Selective Agency, Square Chapel are delighted to welcome China Crisis.

A combination of truly engaging music, a good bit of Scouse humour, and the clear kinship the band have with their fans, any China Crisis show is one you leave happier for having been part of. Their live performances are truly must-see!

The early 1980’s heralded a second Liverpool-based musical renaissance responsible for producing not just new wave legends OMD, but also the diverse likes of Echo and the Bunnymen, Teardrop Explodes, A Flock of Seagulls and Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Amongst these lauded Merseyside acts was China Crisis, emerging in 1981 from their native Kirkby as the song writing duo of vocalist/keyboardist Gary Daly and guitarist / vocalist Eddie Lundon, who over the years have been accompanied by a gifted and creative but ever-mutable group of musicians both on stage and in their recordings.

Did you know that China Crisis classics have been sampled into modern singles by the likes of French Montana and Action Bronson? The band’s songs have also been chosen for use in contemporary cinema such as with the hit film Gone Girl and the immensely popular Sex Education on Netflix, all introducing their music to a whole new audience.

The band have just released their “40th Anniversary: Live from the Liverpool Philharmonic”, a lovingly produced live concert video from their inaugural 40th Anniversary show which features songs from every one of their albums (some never performed live), recorded in their hometown with an all-star 16-piece China Crisis band.

The Smyths: 20th Anniversary Tour Saturday 8th April

More than a tribute, but an experience that embodies the sound and spirit of The Smiths!

The group formed the band back in 2003 born out pure passion for The Smiths.

We didn’t just want to be a tribute band – we wanted to play the music of The Smiths and recreate what is was to see and hear The Smiths live – it just happens that when you do that, the world calls you a tribute.

No silly wigs or props, just expertly rehearsed week in week out to perfect that genuine sound- The Smiths and their fans (like the band) demand nothing less.

Fast forward 18 years and some 760 shows later this class act are now spoken of as being in the top tier of tributes globally. Having played throughout the UK, overseas and at major festivals such as Glastonbury. The group have also appeared on numerous TV and radio shows and many a newspaper column written.

The word tribute has also developed and grown in respect in that time, coming to represent something that is not silly or trite but the best way to see and experience the music of bands no longer with us played by artists who are as passionate and dedicated to their shows as actors and actresses.

For this group, it’s a pleasure and privilege to be seen as the foremost tribute to The Smiths!

Geoff Norcott: Basic Bloke Thursday 21st September

New national tour for star of Have I Got News For You, A League Of Their Own, The Last Leg, Would I Lie to You?, Live At The Apollo, 8 Out of Ten Cats, Backstage With Katherine Ryan and many more!On this his sixth UK tour, Geoff Norcott will be trying to make sense of the current cultural and political scene with his playfully provocative brand of humour. Whether it’s the dire blandness of the two main parties or the shamelessly shoe-horned right-on messages in adverts and films, Geoff will continue to tread in areas much of comedy leaves well alone. But this time around he also has a mission. As well as casting his everyman eye over what’s happening in wider society, Geoff is trying to unpick what’s happening with your average bloke. Remember them?

It’s been a rough couple of years for blokes. Toxic masculinity has grabbed all the headlines and ruined it for communal garden geezers, who have been put under the microscope like never before. At first glance, there’s not much to examine – there’s no Bloke 2.0.Taking up his own bloke’s-eye-view, Geoff can see that despite the social media vortex, your man in the street, average Joe, man on the Clapham Omnibus and your John Smiths just keep plodding on, fuelled by a diet of football, sheds, super-hero films, sporting autobiographies, wearing socks at all times and strategically burying feelings when necessary.

However, under the paraphernalia of manhood and the sometimes basic, even primal, behaviour of dads and lads, Geoff can see that there is something mysterious and definitely non-toxic going on.A kindly and funny stock-take of both himself his fellow man, BASIC BLOKE unlocks some of the more complicated behaviour of your husbands, dads and brothers.

‘He’s a class act with a mature, sharp take on modern politics.’ Sunday Times
