Cleckheaton Writers Group minutes, meeting, 5 December 2022

The Cleckheaton Writers Group (CWG) met on Monday 5 December with Karen, Barbara, Dali, Michelle and Kathy in attendance, Cassie, Gemma and Alice having passed on their apologies.

The minutes of the last meeting were passed, and charity request discussed (details in previous CWG email).

WIP updates: Karen has been editing and has attended the SCBWI conference in Manchester where she had a 1-2-1 with Katie Blagden and won a picture book 1-2-1 in the raffle. She has also submitted 3 chapters and a synopsis of one of her RS novels to Darley Anderson but has received a personalised rejection, plus she's submitted a picture book text to Rocketbird Books on their open submission day. Kathy has not written anything. Barbara has written two drabbles. Michelle has written a poem and entered the National Poetry Society competition (results March 2023). Dali has written a drabble.

CW comps and events: Karen informed members about the Writer's Relief newsletter that has details of upcoming competitions (see previous blog post for information).

Feedback sessions: Michelle shared her poem entitled Plastic Unfantastic which was well received and was a humorous look at, and commentary on, plastic surgery. Barbara shared her drabble entitled Deadlines which was also well received, and Dali shared her short story The Dog's POV which was also humorous. Karen then shared her picture book text which CWG members discussed and gave valuable feedback on cadence.

A discussion was held on dates and who could attend the CWG Christmas Do, which it was agreed will take place from 5.30pm at Wetherspoons in Cleckheaton on Monday 19 December instead of the usual CWG meeting.

The next CWG meeting will take place at the library on Monday 9 January 2023, fortnightly thereafter.

The writing challenges: December - Christmas        January - New beginnings/new you
