We hope you’ve had a great weekend! We’ve lots of exciting new events coming to Square Chapel, we can’t possibly squeeze them all into one newsletter so be sure to check our What’s On page. Film The Big Hit (15) This raucous French comedy, based on a true story, follows Etienne, a struggling actor, who, desperate to make ends meet, finds himself running a theatre workshop in prison. Bringing together the unlikeliest of inmates to stage a production of Samuel Beckett’s famous play Waiting for Godot, Samuel has his work cut out for him. Can he do it – and will the production take off? 19th - 25th Aug Joyride (15) Beloved British acting royalty Olivia Colman stars in this Irish coming-of-age drama. When the hung over, wantaway Joy (Colman) sets off on an adventure to give away her new-born baby, she’s joined by cheeky street urchin Mully (Charlie Reid). A charming road trip ensues with the two unexpected travelling partners. Will Joy carry out her mission, and what’s Mully’s role in all of this? 19th - 25th Aug Shaun The Sheep Movie (U) Another animated Aardman delight, Shaun The Sheep Movie. When Shaun and his pals, including Timmy the lamb and Shirley the ewe, devise a plan to put their master the farmer to sleep things backfire badly, and the farmer is taken off to the big city. Shaun and co. must now sort out their mess… 19th - 25th Aug Fire of Love (PG) A story of two French lovers, Katia and Maurice Krafft, who died in a volcanic explosion doing the very thing that brought them together: unravelling the mysteries of volcanoes. Telling their story through archival footage and testimony and thousands of photographs, Fire of Love is a captivating and enthralling story of science, true love and unwavering curiosity. 19th - 25th Aug Bullet Train (15) An action-packed action-comedy with thrills, spills and lots of speed! Ladybug (Pitt) is an assassin with a history of bad jobs. Determined to get this one right – a job on Japan’s fastest train – Ladybug’s latest mission might just not prove as straightforward as he wants – not least as the train is packed with other assassins, each with their own priorities…. 26th Aug - 1st Sep Music Stephen Gott Pianist performs Bach, Haydn Chopin and Liszt Young Concert Pianist Stephen Gott performs works by Bach, Haydn, Chopin and Liszt in his home town of Halifax. His piano career began at the comparatively late age of 14. He initially wanted to be a professional footballer but hearing the early piano music of Debussy persuaded him to pursue music. Stephen has studied at Leeds Conservatoire, Trinity Laban with Penelope Roskell and more recently finished his master’s degree at The University of Huddersfield with Jonathan Fisher. He was a finalist in the Liszt Society International Piano Competition 2019 and performed Annees de Pelerinage BK 3 and his seldom performed Mephisto Waltz 4. Stephen has performed in masterclasses to Dr Leslie Howard, Sir Stephen Hough and now studies with Pascal Nemirovski. The NTD International Piano Competition in New York City has invited Stephen to perform in the preliminary rounds of the competition, which can be viewed on their social media pages world-wide from the semi-final stage. He also plans to collaborate with the film composer James Sizemore who Orchestrated the Hobbit Trilogy. Stephen also plans to release his first recording. Saturday 27th August Your New Friday Night Plans Feel Good Friday. Friday Night Live is here! FNL is an exciting platform for emerging and local musicians to showcase their talents. Nationally-acclaimed tribute Hey Beatles make their debut visit to the Square Chapel playing a hit-packed 2 hour set of some of the greatest pop hits of all time! Evoking the spirit of the swinging 60s from Love me Do to Let it Be, from the Cavern to the Rooftop, this not to be missed concert will transport you back in time to the 1960s. Including all-new for 2022 video and visual elements, this unmissable show will take you on a journey through the music of John, Paul George and Ringo via period correct costumes, instruments and plenty of chances to sing along. Book early to avoid disappointment! Saturday 8th October Halifax Philharmonic Club present – The Elias String Quartet Halifax Philharmonic Club are delighted to present Elias String Quartet. Past BBC3 New Generation Artists, the Elias String Quartet quickly established themselves as one of the most intense and vibrant quartets of their generation. This programme opens with one of Haydn’s ‘Prussian’ quartets and closes with familiar Beethoven. The central work introduces us to the blend of European Romanticism and African-American heritage characteristic of the works by Florence Price (1887-1953). Friday 14th October The Swing Commanders The Swing Commanders are a true musical force. With a relentless, infectious energy, they deliver the best hand-picked Jazz, Country, Swing and Blues in their joyous, inimitable way. Lush vocals harmonies and hot solos with rhythms from ballads to Jive to quicksteps take audience on an unforgettable journey appealing to lovers of Jazz, Country, Swing & Blues. Friday 21st October Bollywood Brass Band Bollywood Brass Band is the UK’s pioneering Indian – style brass band, playing the great tunes and compulsively danceable rhythms of Bollywood. With brass, saxophone, dhol drums and a colossal sousaphone, the Bollywood Brass Band is one of the most colourful, joyful and exhilarating acts around. Friday 28th October Confetti A Queer Rom-Com written & performed by Will Jackson. Felix is uptight and unlucky in love. He’s the mate of honour at his best friend’s wedding – one they’ve been planning since childhood – and he’s going to make sure it’s absolutely perfect. That is, as long as there are no distractions along the way… It’s Helen’s surprise Hen Night, and you’re all invited!
