Are you gearing up for the new term ahead? Are you full of queasy
anxiety or bright optimism? Perhaps a turbulent balance between the two.
I’m going to be filling my metaphorical new pencil case and book bag with
tickets for the London
Literature Festival (Greta is headlining) and putting in
pre-orders (on bookshop.org)
for some autumn big hitters: Ian McEwan, Cormac McCarthy, Kate Atkinson,
William Boyd and Maggie O’Farrell are due to publish this term. Long
evenings by the fireplace ahead… (saving on electricity too!).
Have a great week.

Summer holidays and heat should go together like love and marriage,
not this year however. It struck me as I was cycling around the small island
of Spetses in Greece (so wonderful) with my children last
week that while I was relishing the beauty of the views over a sparkling sea,
I was also weaving my way through an arid tinderbox landscape. I couldn't
shake off the thought of ‘what if…’ and how easily a fire could sweep through
and destroy everything. Our world is so very beautiful, and so very fragile.
We want to see it, discover it and show our children its bounties. We can
only do this if we let go of the matches and stop setting it on fire.
On a more positive note, C&TH is now on TikTok - you can follow us here.

COOKING LIKE
AN ITALIAN
Sicily is one of my favourite places to eat. Its produce is second to none
and spending time in the market is the best way to see it, smell it, buy it –
then cook it. Failing that, try your hand at one of Giovann Attard’s Sicilian-inspired summer recipes
– and all will be well with the world.
