The Cleckheaton Writers Group (CWG) met on Monday evening 5.30-7pm at Cleckheaton Library with Barbara, Gemma, Kathy, Alice and Karen in attendance, Neil, Sarah and Cassie having passed on their apologies.
The minutes from the previous meeting were passed.
WIP updates: Karen has been editing, entered her picture book into digital@booktrust.org.uk to win a writing clinic place, filled in an application for Screen Skills, attended a BBC Script Writing for Casualty Webinar and performed two poems at the HLF event Creative Voices at LBT. Barbara has written more on her Halloween story. Gemma has been editing. Kathy has written a poem about Halloween. Alice has been planning and getting ready for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month - November).
The WIP updates led to conversations about picture books and the editing process.
CW comps/workshops/events: The CWA Dagger has opened (deadline February 2022), Grindstone International Novel Prize is open (£20 fee, super early bird deadline 1 April, early bird deadline 1 July and final deadline 1 October). The Bath Children's Novel Award is open with a deadline of 30 November. Writing Magazine has a picture book course with Amy Sparkes for Halloween. Curtis Brown Discoveries Writers Programme for an unpublished novel written by a woman is a FREE competition with a prize of £5k and representation which has a deadline of 17 January and requires the first 10k words of the novel for entry.
Feedback sessions: Barbara had brought along her story Letters from Lucy which was well received. None of the CWG members guessed the excellent twist in the tale ending and it was felt the writing was very visual. Kathy ejoyed the unique layout of letters and real life, letters and real life. Gemma wanted to listen to the piece again, now she knows the ending, to work out where the clues were. Members felt the piece would be suitable for publication in a women's magazine and this led to a discussion about how the story would look on the page.
Writing plans: Alice will be finishing planning for NaNoWriMo. Kathy wants to finish her poem and decide between working on her detective story or starting a new piece. Gemma will continue to edit. Barbara will work on another short story. Karen will continue to edit and hopes to plan for NaNo where she will either edit one of her MSs or start on the 3rd book in her Romano series.
Writing Challenge: The Halloween theme is still the current challenge for members to share their peices at the next meeting in November when the challenge theme will change.
The next meeting will take place on Monday 1 November 2021 at 5.30pm at Cleckheaton Library. Please feel free to send work to members ahead of the meeting via email or bring along to the meeting for feedback. New members always welcome.
