Your weekly round-up of creative and cultural activities has landed!   In this week’s Creative Lowdown, we’ve got a superb line-up of in-person and online activities. There are powerful exhibitions to mark the upcoming Refugee Week, events to celebrate Pride Month, and many more gems to keep you entertained, feeling inspired, and help you get your cultural fix.   As always, we’d love to hear about any events and activities that you’re planning. READ THE BLOG Creative things to see and do Circus students reveal what’s Beyond the Facade Until 12 June Circomedia, Bristol’s centre for contemporary circus and physical theatre, is busy educating and training the next generation of circus artists. To show how it’s going, the BTEC students are holding a performance, Beyond the Façade. Join them at St Paul’s Church in Bristol where two years of building up strength, skills and friendship will culminate in a gripping exploration of self.   BOOK TICKETS HERE Museum of the Home re-opening 12 June – 26 September East London’s Museum of the Home re-opens on Saturday following a three-year renovation to improve visitor access and double its space for exhibitions, events and collections. It is re-opening with a new artist commission by BLKBRD Collective, called Bearers of Home. The commission is made up of five double-sided banners, set on the Kingsland Road lawns, which represent those that see home as a space lacking stability and permanency. Entry is free but book your ticket in advance. PLAN YOUR VISIT Journeys Festival International  14 - 20 June Mark this year’s Refugee Week 2021 with Sun Up, Rain Falls, River Rises, a collection of three audio narratives as part of Journeys Festival International. In each narrative, be transported to a different country and listen to memories and reflections shared by each writer. To accompany the audio works, Journeys Festival International is placing posters with QR codes in specially selected locations across the UK. If you scan the QR code you can enjoy the stunning illustrations, beautiful soundtrack and thought-provoking tales that form the piece.   VIEW THE LOCATIONS Mafwa Theatre – Sit With Us 14 - 20 June Also part of Refugee Week, Leeds-based Mafwa Theatre will be presenting their upcoming project Sit with Us, an interactive art installation where women from different migration backgrounds invite you to sit, make yourself comfortable and listen to their stories. The project also features printed textiles, filmed monologues and guided soundwalks around the local area. The installation will be open to visitors by appointment only and will also be open to refugee support organisations to host events throughout the week. BOOK YOUR TICKETS The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum  17 June Head to the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum on 17 June for a special after-hours visit to their exhibition, 2 Tone: Lives & Legacies. It's the first ever major exhibition in the UK devoted solely to the 2 Tone music sensation, focusing on bands such as The Specials, The Selecter, Madness, The Beat and The Bodysnatchers, as well as looking at 2 Tone’s continuing influence on music, fashion, politics, and culture. GET YOUR TICKET Art Night: Nothing Compares 2U 18 June – 18 July Art Night returns this summer with a new and extended month-long programme of creativity. It’s taking place across the UK for the first time, with partners that include The Tetley in Leeds and Towner Eastbourne, East Sussex. This year’s programme draws inspiration from defiance in small acts and moments of self-determination, both personal and collective. It will feature new artist commissions which will be broadcast every Wednesday and , with works from the Guerrilla Girls, Sonya Dyer, Mark Leckey and more.   DISCOVER MORE ROAR (Rotherham Open Arts Renaissance) – The Suitcase Until 18 June The private chapel at Rotherham stately home Wentworth Woodhouse is welcoming back a thought-provoking exhibition by Pakistani women’s art collective Zanib Collective. Through objects, poems, visual imagery and video, The Suitcase explores the stories that these women brought with them in their suitcases when they travelled to the UK in the 1960s. Supported by the WE Great Place project, you can view the exhibition until 18 June, before it transfers to Rotherham’s Clifton Park Museum.   BOOK HERE Repeat Signal by Tatty Hennessy 17 – 27 June Check out Repeat Signal, a new site-specific play produced by November Club about two teenagers who sneak into a museum at night. Written by award-winning playwright Tatty Hennessy and directed by Joe Hufton, this innovative piece will be staged at the Woodhorn Museum and available to audiences online for free. The team have also been working with Syrian refugees to help inform the story which coincides with Refugee Week. FULL DETAILS Celebrating Pride on the Isle of Wight 19 June – 17 July Head down to the Isle of Wight this Pride Month and gain a new perspective on the island’s untold past. StoneCrabs Theatre’s new heritage project, Out On An Island, is the island’s first ever exhibition entirely dedicated to LGBTQIA+ heritage and oral history. Opening on 19 June at the Quay Arts Centre in Newport, the exhibition features photography, artwork, and rare LGBTQIA+ memorabilia, alongside an enlightening film documentary and theatre performances. The exhibition has been made possible thanks to funding from the Government’s Culture Recovery Fund. FIND OUT MORE Es Morgan at The Place 24 June - 8 July The Place and Wellcome Collection have teamed up to commission a new dance film by artist Es Morgan, available to watch online for free. The work, broadcast live in a continuous loop, is an intimate and dream-like exploration into trans embodiment, exploring themes of visibility, being with others and being alone. To mark its online debut, join Es Morgan and The Place’s Artist Development Producer Amy Bell on Thursday 24 June as they discuss the work, the ideas behind it, and the process of its making. BOOK NOW All in the Same Storm Until 5 September Across Refugee Week, explore De La Warr Pavilion’s exhibition All in the Same Storm: Pandemic Patchwork Stories. Organised by the Refugee Buddy Project, Hastings, Rother and Wealden, the show features 95 patchwork squares crafted by people across the community, including those seeking refuge, volunteers, and students. Each hand-stitched square aims to tell a different life story from the Covid-19 pandemic – with the final collection revealing tales of resistance, change, togetherness, isolation, loss and home.
