The national initiative to remove barriers and encourage uptake of the life-saving vaccine will see drop-in vaccination sessions pop-up in towns and villages across the country, and Kirklees is no exception.

The COVID pop-up vaccine clinics have been a huge success! Over 5,000 people have been vaccinated in June, with more clinics coming.

COVID-19 Update

Surge testing has come to an end in Kirklees. Thank you to everyone who's taken part over the last month. You've helped us identify and isolate 472 asymptomatic positive Covid-19 cases which could have otherwise unknowingly passed the virus on to others.

Library Adventures From Home: 23.6.21


Birkby is Back!!!!!

Birkby LibraryWe are so excited to have a library back in Birkby!!!!!! Not only a library but a brand new shiny one! On our first day of opening, some lovely ladies from the community came and planted some spinach in the planters in our Community Garden. It's fantastic that local people are taking ownership of the new library and getting involved. Kirklees Together has up to date information about when we are open (see link in the next section), so pop over to say hi and let us know what you'd like to see happening in the future in YOUR library.

We have extended our opening hours and you can find a full list of when we are open on the Kirklees Together website.

We are continuing to monitor the situation in line with the Government roadmap so keep checking the Kirklees Together pages to find the most up to date information as we are reviewing things all the time.

Covid-19 health and safety regulations are in place for safe borrowing and bookable IT sessions.

As yet we are not hosting events or running group sessions such as Storytimes.

A Boy Called Hope

A Boy Called Hope by Laura Williamson

This book is an excellent reminder that true family aren't necessarily the people you share your name with...Dan Hope's life has all gone a bit weird...it started when his dad left...with the woman from the chippy...His mum has a new boyfriend who keeps secrets and even Dan's sister has started being mean. Dan decides to sort his life out once and for all and we get to join him on his journey from one amazing plan to the next...the problem is...his plans...they never go according to...well, to plan! You can borrow this as an e-book or as a paper book from one of our libraries.

Carnegie and Greenaway Winners!!!

We are thrilled with the winners of the Carnegie Award (for an outstanding book written in English for Children and Young people): Jason Reynolds for Look Both Ways and the Kate Greenaway Medal (for outstanding illustration in a book for children): Sydney Smith for Small in the City.

Well done also to Manjeet Mann (Run, Rebel) and Sharon King-Chai (Starbird) for winning the Shadower's choice awards. Have a look at the Carnegie Greenaway website to find out more.

You can watch a Greenaway inspired #LAL session with Sharon King-Chai and Tiffany...one of our very own librarians and also a Carnegie/Greenaway judge by heading to our Library Adventures Live! pages.

 


Storywalk to your library...with the Mayor!

Mayor visit to Denby Dale

The Mayor and Mayoress visited Denby Dale Library this month to collect a "Walk to Your Library" sheet (which you can collect at your library or download from our website) and have a look round the library before heading off with on a librarian led tour of Denby Dale...we found everything on the trail sheet except for ducks! I think they were just being shy!

We also passed the wonderful sheep in the picture...this was created as part of the Innovation in Textiles Woven festival in Kirklees.

There are fun events taking place this weekend, including a 2 day event at Ravensknowle Park called Growing Colour Together with family workshops and exciting things going on. Have a look at the Woven website to see what's going on.

This #LAL video, made by Hannah, one of our Library Apprentices provides a great introduction to #LAL and all the amazing sessions!

Each week LAL! gives you the opportunity to type questions directly to our guests, which we can ask for you during the session. Can't watch live? no worries, you can still email questions to our guests in advance.

COVID-19 Data Update

After a drop last week, Kirklees’ Covid-19 infection rate has increased again, alongside most areas in the country. Local hospital admissions due to Covid-19 have also started to rise, so we’re urging everyone eligible to take the vaccine.

After rising consistently in recent weeks, Kirklees’ Covid-19 infection rate has fallen by 15% over the last seven days. It's still above the national average, so we’re urging everyone to continue to stay safe and take the vaccine when it’s your turn.

Not only are we reopening our library buildings, we've even opened a brand new library.

To find out where and when we are currently offering safer borrowing along with bookable IT sessions please select your preferred library from our current timetable

Covid-19 Health and Safety regulations remain in place and as yet we are not hosting events or group sessions such as Readers Groups or Storytimes.

Free membership, free reservations for titles not on the shelves and no fines to pay if you're too busy to bring them back on the day they are due.

Hi VIS 2021: The Diversity of Reading

Hi Vis 2021

Hi VIS 2021 is taking place between 7th–20th June, and this year we are celebrating the diversity of reading.

Hi VIS (formerly Make A Noise in Libraries) fortnight seeks each year to highlight the wonderful world of accessible reading. Reading is something that can and does bring us together, regardless of what or how we read.

A time to say thank you: Volunteers Week 2021

Volunteers Week

Volunteers’ Week is a time to recognise and say thank you to volunteers who do a great job in our local communities. Over the last year even more people than ever – from all walks of life and in all our local places – have gone out of their way to help their neighbours and support each other, making a huge difference. Third Sector Leaders Kirklees have teamed up with Kirklees Museums & Galleries to create an online exhibition to share some of these inspiring stories. You can hear more this week and join in by following @TSLVolunteering or #VolunteersWeekKirklees on social media.

WOVEN Festival - 5th to 27th June

Woven Festival

WOVEN is a celebration of innovation in textiles across Kirklees. From Saturday 5th June you can start to explore and experience WOVEN in lots of local places. Most participatory activities where people may need to gather will take place towards the end of the month, giving the best chance of them being able to take place within COVID safety regulations.

Get involved in the Kirklees Climate Commission

The Kirklees Climate Commission will bring together key communities, organisations and groups from across Kirklees to support, guide and track climate action in our area. The Commission is now recruiting members, with applications welcomed for a number of Commissioners to represent the voluntary, public and private sectors. If you're part of a community or environmental group, you can apply by 14th June to be a Commissioner.

Community Buildings Recovery Grants

Recovery Grants

Grants of up to £20k are available from Kirklees Council to help vital community buildings recover from Covid-19 and keep providing activities that really matter for people in our communities. Voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations in Kirklees who own or rent buildings in our local places can apply by 6th June, to help you recover lost income due to Covid-19 restrictions.
