Cleckheaton Writers Group minutes, 7 June 2021

Cleckheaton Writers Group (CWG) met last night via Zoom at 5.45pm with Alice, Gemma, Karen and Neil in attendance, Daniel, Andrea and Sarah having passed on their apologies.

The minutes from the last meeting were passed.

WIP updates: Karen has heard back from her Publisher regarding her questions on the contract and the Publishers hope the book will be out by November this year. She attended a RNA NWS Meet the Agent event and has submitted to the agent following a request for her first RS novel. Also, following #PitMad she submitted for both RS novels to a US Literary Agent following requests. She has received an email to inform her she is still in the running for the Women in Comedy Prize 2021 with her rom com novel and she has written over 2k words on the sequel. Karen has also signed up for the RNA virtual conference securing 1-2-1s with two of her top three agents/editors. Gemma has completed 11 hours of editing and submitted to competitions including the Jericho Writers Friday Night Live, the Retreat West £10 pitch competition and submitted a grant application. Neil has written some more on his WIP and blog posts on film/book reviews, realising it is 10 years since he joined CWG. Alice has been planning new stories and submitted to the Guppy open submission for MG novels (this is open for one week only).

CW comps/workshops/events: As well as the Guppy open submission as mentioned above, the Madeleine Milburn mentorship is open for entries until the 1st of July for stories MG to adult, Bradford Literature Festival have a Simon & Schuster free entry competition on Twitter with a deadline of 5pm on 15 June for 12 workshop sessions for 12 attendees with editors, event takes place on 26 June on Zoom (winners find out on Friday 18 June), just fill in a form to enter.

Feedback sessions: Alice brought her new picture book to share for feedback which was very well received. It was suggested one of the words in the title might be unsuitable for a picture book and some alternatives were workshopped. Gemma and Karen thought it was a fun action book that focussed on emotions and mental health and Neil felt it reminded him of the classic Goldilocks and the 3 bears with the MC having to choose each emotion until they got the right one. Alice told CWG members the idea is based around a real condition, alexithymia, where a person cannot name an emotion.

Writing plans: Alice will start writing not planning and will play around with the picture book. Neil will finish his cubby hole story and join Write MAGIC to take part in the Zoom writing sessions. All three ladies recommended these sessions and joining the group as they have found it very motivating. Gemma will complete more editing. Karen will continue her editing and hopes to write more on her WIP. Both Gemma and Karen plan to take part in CampNaNoWriMo in July, Alice may join in via a Word Warrior type group.

Next meeting: The next CWG meeting will take place on Monday 21 June 2021 at 5.45pm on Zoom.
