Kirklees Newsletter 22 June 2021
|
The WOVEN Festival, now in it’s
third week (and what a Festival it has been so far! with still more to
see and do!) will come to a close at the weekend with a celebration of
two long term projects taking place on both Saturday and Sunday.
The
Big Rainbow Knit Weekend is taking place in St George’s Square
where you can browse yarn stalls and displays, watch scaled-up craft
demonstrations, and soak up the atmosphere with roaming theatrics and
music.
At
Ravensknowle Park, you can find out more about how to make natural dyes
and how they can be used in textile artworks and fashion at Growing
Colour Together – maybe pick up a copy of the family
friendly workbook of natural dyeing activities to follow as you
wander through the park.
You will
find lots more things to see and do in the newsletter and on our website –
with a great selection of workshops and activities coming up that you can
get involved in.
Just a
reminder for those of you planning to contribute to the Kirklees Year of
Music 2023, ‘Writing
the Strongest Funding Applications' the first of the series of free
online workshops to support you in finding and applying for funding takes
place this evening at 6.30pm (repeated tomorrow at 3.30pm) – places still
available! More
workshops coming up.
Have a
great week!

Kirklees Newsletter 15 June 2021
|
The WOVEN textile
festival continues throughout June and last week was the turn of Batley Train station to
be yarn bombed, along with villages in the district who have joined in by
yarn bombing around their village – you can see where on the WOVEN website.
This
Saturday brings the Space Shed to
Greenhead Park by Unlimited Theatre where they will shine a light on some
of the great innovations in textile science going on here in Kirklees.
Book your place as numbers are limited.
Over the
weekend, the Our Biennale Finale
takes place in Huddersfield with exhibitions celebrating the creativity
of the children and young people in Kirklees. Using empty units and
windows as part of the Temporary Contemporary
initiative, the Biennale Finale will show sculptures, music, sound walks,
dance, artwork, films, and photographs – a collection of the work the
young people of Kirklees have created over this past year.
The Year
of Music 2023 will be putting a spotlight on music in Kirklees and for
those planning to contribute to the year that usually means looking for
funding. Lisa Jagger from Straight Forward Funding is running a series
of online workshops to support
you in finding and applying for funding. The first session starts on 22
June with ‘Writing
the Strongest Funding Applications’. Take a look at
all the sessions (taking place during the day and evening) and book your
place.
There's
lots more listed below or browse the Creative Kirklees
website to find out what's going on near you.

Are you looking for something new to get involved with? If so, why not
volunteer to be a part of one of our amazing festivals? Either during
this year’s WOVEN festival
in June 2021 or for next year’s Cleckheaton Folk
Festival in July 2022. Both have a range of
opportunities to get involved and they need your help to make them
happen.
Over the
past few months there have been online sessions to find out more about
how your music group or organisation can get involved in the Year of
Music 2023. This time it’s the turn of bands, musicians
& composers. So, book on for Tuesday 8th June at
7pm to find out how you can help showcase music in Kirklees.
In case
you missed the live stream of the Kirklees Cuckoo in the making you can
still watch it being made on YouTube.
The work was made as part of Our Biennale by young
artists at The Children's Art School, using clothing donated by
local communities.
There are
plenty of other arts and creative activities to take part in on our What’s On page but with recent news

Kirklees Newsletter 18 May 2021
|
It’s hard
to believe a whole week has gone by since our last newsletter
but here we are again and we bring good news!
Kirklees
Council and Opera North have announced the return of live music to
Huddersfield and Dewsbury Town Halls in September after a year of
silence, with a full programme of orchestral, chamber and organ concerts
for the Kirklees
Concert Season 2021-22. A specially recorded concert
celebrating the announcement of the new Season sees Opera
North perform Mozart and Bach Concertos and is available now to watch
for free. Tickets for all events will go on sale in July, a little later
than usual to allow for alignment with government guidance as the path
out of lockdown continues.
It’s also
great to hear that Holmfirth
Arts Festival, now in its 14th year, will be back in September 2021
with a live festival, after going online last year.
If you’ve
been in and around Huddersfield Town Centre you may have noticed the
lamppost banners promoting the cultural offer of the town are back
after having been replaced with Covid social distancing banners for over
12 months – they include some of the many independent venues that have
now re-opened and we wish them all well in their phased return to normality.
Hope you
enjoy the newsletter and remember in between newsletters and you can
visit the website
anytime.
ps. don’t
forget Woven
in Kirklees – a celebration of all things textiles begins on 5th
June!
