With thanks to Country and Townhouse, here are a few ideas of things to do this week in London:

I’m Julie Montagu, also
known as Viscountess Hinchingbrooke, and I’m delighted to be
C&TH’s first guest editor on the What’s On newsletter, sharing some of
the things I’m loving this week – mainly from my home, Mapperton
Estate in Dorset. June is a fabulous month at Mapperton as the
gardens are in full bloom. We are busy with last-minute preparations before
our doors officially re-open to the public from 1 July – at long last. We
do hope you’ll come and pay us a visit!
Have a great week.

WHAT’S EXCITING ME THIS WEEK

FORAGING
Recently I’ve been foraging
for ground elder and nettles. Our head gardener Steve Lannin has been
showing me how to remove it safely to prevent it from taking over and
swamping our native plants. Although ground elder is a weed, it has plenty
of health benefits – and if you pick the young leaves, it tastes delicious.
We added a nettle and ground elder soup to the menu at Mapperton Cafe
earlier this month, which sold out almost immediately, but I’ll
share the recipe with you here, so you can make your own.

REWILDING
Last year we decided to give one of the Mapperton farms, Cotleigh, back to
nature through a rewilding
project. Local ecologist Tom Brareton took me on a tour recently, and I was
blown away to discover we have four native species of orchids now growing
in abundance. My 14-year-old son Nestor and I are fascinated with them and
have started documenting each one. I would encourage you to leave a space
in your garden to rewild and see what grows. It is such a thrill.

REPAIRING
After nearly 300 years of wear and tear, we have finally repaired our
Aubusson rug. It’s a highly valuable and special rug made in Aubusson,
France, where workshops were established in 1743 to manufacture pile
carpets primarily for the nobility. It has lived on the floor of our Tudor
drawing room for years and, due to the usual footfall of visitors in the
past, it was in dire need of repair. I urge you to look at repairing
treasured items rather than replacing them. The Aubusson feels
like part of our family and it now once more looks incredible.
