How On-Demand Printing Can Help Publishers Break Into New Markets

Across the publishing industry, there has been a growing shift towards a strategy of on-demand, and the disruptive events of 2020 and Covid-19 have only accelerated these changes. An Eco-Friendly Approach to Publishing: Close-up on HP Publishing Solutions

With print-on-demand technology, environmentally friendly inks, sustainable paper choices, and a global reach, HP is looking to help publishers lower their carbon footprints.

The traditional publishing supply chain contains significant overhead and can negatively impact the environment. From printing to warehousing, there are ecological costs to be measured in terms of raw materials used, energy consumption, carbon emitted during book manufacturing and shipping, and the power required to store, manage, and pulp overstock. How can environmentally conscious publishers lower their carbon footprints without completely halting supply chains?

With more than 40 novels under her belt, historical mystery author Rhys Bowen shows no signs of slowing down. With her latest standalone, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author—whose work has won 20 honors to date, including multiple Agatha, Anthony, and Macavity Awards—transports readers to Venice during World War II.

In The Venice Sketchbook, protagonist Caroline Grant follows clues left behind by her recently deceased great-aunt—clues that take her back to the Venice of the late 1930s. Bestselling author Mark Sullivan hails the book, saying “Rhys Bowen crafts a propulsive, unexpected plot with characters who come vibrantly alive on the page.” And bestselling author Barbara O’Neal calls the title “that rare book, both epic and personal, and utterly compelling. Two women, decades apart, escape to Venice, each forced to grapple with the influence of world events on her own life. This is a tale brimming with secrets, romance, and possibilities, cast against the colorful setting of irresistible Venice. I was utterly captured.”

This newsletter is produced in partnership with Lake Union Publishing.

48559-4.JPGIntroducing The Venice Sketchbook

Love and secrets collide in Venice during WWII in an enthralling novel of brief encounters and lasting romance by New York Times bestselling author Rhys Bowen.

Caroline Grant is struggling to accept the end of her marriage when she receives an unexpected bequest. Her beloved great-aunt Lettie leaves her a sketchbook, three keys, and a final whisper: Venice. Caroline’s quest: to scatter Juliet “Lettie” Browning’s ashes in the city she loved and to unlock the mysteries stored away for more than 60 years.

It’s 1938 when art teacher Juliet Browning arrives in romantic Venice. For her students, it’s a wealth of history, art, and beauty. For Juliet, it’s poignant memories and a chance to reconnect with Leonardo Da Rossi, the man she loves whose future is already determined by his noble family. However star-crossed, nothing can come between them. Until the threat of war closes in on Venice and they’re forced to fight, survive, and protect a secret that will bind them forever.

Key by key, Lettie’s life of impossible love, loss, and courage unfolds. It’s one that Caroline can now make right again as her own journey of self-discovery begins.

Spotlight on new authors

The longlist for the Stella Prize for Australian women’s writing was announced earlier this month, and it was interesting to see that five of the 12 works on the list were written by debut authors. This prize and others—such as the Readings Prize for New Australian Fiction and the MUD Literary Prize—highlight some of the outstanding books by up-and-coming Australian authors that were published in a year where brand-name authors and backlist bestsellers often prevailed.

But as countries emerge from lockdown and readers return to bookstores, publishers are hoping for a renewed interest in new voices.

In the first issue of Think Australian for 2021, we shine a spotlight on debut and early-career authors, from publishers’ and agents’ top picks to recent acquisitions and award-winners. Books+Publishing has also produced a handy round-up of first-time fiction authors who launched their books in the midst of the pandemic.

As in previous years, we’ve teamed up with Publishers Weekly and BookBrunch to distribute Think Australian to over 55,000 subscribers. Look out for future issues ahead of the Bologna, London and Frankfurt book fairs. For more information on Think Australian and to sign up directly, click here.
