The best British eco-stays to book now, and

I made up my mind this
week. I’m going to Yorkshire for my summer hols, for fish and chips
in Whitby, Barbara Hepworth at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and
stomping around the Dales with Raffy, our Border Terrier, perhaps
popping in to say hello to The Yorkshire Shepherdess herself,
Amanda Owen, who I interviewed a while back. If you’re
staying put, why not try one of these 40 British gems – all
flagbearers for the new luxury – which is green luxury. Local food,
local materials, local fun. I’m in.
Have a great week.

WHAT’S
KEEPING MY SPIRITS UP

|
Hotels
Welcome back! We have long
missed walking through your hallowed doors into sparkling cocktail
bars with noisy people inside, sumptuous dining rooms with clinking
glassware and cocooning rooms with cloud-like beds. Never have we
needed you more. So, for those who are opening tomorrow
I hope your reservation books overfloweth.

Candlesticks
I’m slowly ramping up my
home entertaining plans and my concession to the tablescaping trend is candlesticks (so good for
hiding the Zoom-fatigued face). As many as possible, please: short,
tall, stumpy, statuesque, glass, ceramic, metal, curly, twisted or
straight – candlelight brings warmth in more ways than one to your
dinner party.

New wave materials
Do you know your pinatex
and vegea from your renewable corn and mycelium? These are just some
of the more sustainable materials
being explored in fashion and accessories, in place of leather and
manmade fibres. Stella McCartney is at the vanguard, of course, but
there are some other fab brands creating consciously covetable stuff.
