Huddersfield Literature Festival updates

With the latest news and offers from Huddersfield Literature Festival:

A big thank you to everyone who has joined in our online activity over the past 10 days.

With time on our hands, some of us will be thinking about that novel, or short story collection, we have always meant to write.
And Huddersfield Literature Festival is here to help with top tips and readings from some of our authors:

Looking for feedback on your writing? Paul Burston and VG Lee are offering special Festival rates on critiques of your work, from an 800-word extract to a full manuscript.

Find out more HERE
Listen to Paul introducing and reading from his latest bestseller, The Closer I GetHERE and VG Lee reading from her short story collection Oh You Pretty Thing HERE.
Aspiring writers can enjoy VG Lee’s Writing Tips HERE.

Features, poems and stories

Louise Beech was due to perform at Polari, run by Paul Burston – an LGBTQ+ literary salon, which we look forward to hosting every year. You can listen to Louise introducing and reading from her latest novel The Lion Tamer Who Lost HERE.

Another of our Polari performers is
Andrew McMillan. His debut, physical, was the first poetry collection to win the Guardian First Book Award. He introduces and reads poems from his latest collection playtime HERE.

‘My characters hug, and kiss, and jostle each other in busy streets…writing these scenes feels weird and even archaic; perhaps a little transgressive. This is not what we do.’

David Barnett explains why
Things Can Only Get Better… read more HERE.

Meg Pokrass was due to teach her Fiery Flash Fiction Workshop at our Festival – instead we have a special treat for you: a brand new story, Glamping in the Mist. Click HERE to read it and for a link to Meg’s Flash Fiction writing tips.

Author Q&As

Nell Pattison is a debut author, who we had paired up with Val McDermid for a live event during the Festival. Her novel The Silent House introduces BSL translator Paige Northwood, brought in to help the police investigation when a young girl is murdered in a deaf household

We hope to reschedule this event for HLF2021; meanwhile, you can read her Q&A HERE.

RC Bridgestock
– a husband and wife crime-writing duo – share their insights into their writing career and as consultants on TV crime dramas Happy Valley and Scott & Bailey.

The follow-up to their popular DI Jack Dylan series is a new series set in Huddersfield, starting with
Payback, which introduces a female DI Charley Mann. Read their Q&A HERE.

And finally ...

In Can You Hear Me,  Paramedic ‘Jake Jones’ shares a fascinating insight into one of the most important and demanding jobs that anyone can do – under normal circumstances. So we’d like to say a huge thank you to ‘Jake’ and all the NHS workers dealing with Coronavirus on top of their usual duties.

You can order his book from our Festival partners Read Holmfirth and Fox Lane Books.

A short audio reading by Jake from his book can be accessed HERE.

PLEASE NOTE:
If you are waiting for a ticket refund, please can we ask for your patience.

We have thousands to process and are additionally having a few issues with those paid through WorldPay (rather than PayPal), which we expect to be resolved soon. However, it may take a couple of weeks to work through all of the tickets we have to refund.

PLEASE DO NOT:

a) phone our call centre about refunds – it costs us money each time you call

b) email our staff about refunds – we are trying to deal with the fall-out of cancelling the Festival and it takes time away from our work to reply to you

c) phone or email to ask if events are going ahead – all events have been cancelled apart from those still on the events page of our website, which we have postponed in the hope of setting a new date.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP US:

We have set up a page where you can donate from £3 upwards to help our Festival funds. This will be used to pay authors to run some online activities with us as they will no longer be appearing at our Festival.

You can find out more and donate HERE.

Thank you for your co-operation and understanding at this difficult time.
