Poetry Workshop

This workshop looks at the poetics of ships, shipwrecks, and ghost ships. Delve into the human histories set adrift at sea, and sunk to the bottom of the ocean, the ones washed up on shore and wrecked on the rocks in stormy weather.

Saturday 16 May, 10.30 am – 4.30 pm via Zoom. Find out more about the workshop here.

Our friends at The Poetry School offer concessions to their activities. Find out more here

Announcing our 2020 Writer in Residence

We’re pleased to announce the appointment of Akila Richards as our 2020 Writer In Residence. We received a record 54 applications this year of extremely high quality. We’d like to thank all of those who applied and wish them luck with their work.

You can read more on Akila's work via our blog here

Akila will undertake a residency at Preston Park Recovery Centre later in the year when current measures have been lifted. She will serve on the Creative Future Writers’ Award judging panel, contribute to the awards anthology, and read her work at the showcase. Akila will also provide writing workshops to their service users and at another Brighton organisation.

Due to current conditions, Akila will facilitate online writing workshops. For more information about these, please see full details below.

We’re offering online video workshops via Zoom with our 2020 Writer In Residence, Akila Richards. We’ll provide a short guide on getting started with Zoom to all participants, but it’s very easy to use.

Poets: Explore poetic forms such as prose, couplets, haiku and free form. Practice writing with imagery, line breaks and metaphors. There will also be a session in how to read your poems to keep the audience engaged and reading out your favourite poem.

Prose: In-session exercises on character development, writing engaging dialogue, the short story arc and structure. Explore the use of language and dialects and creating a consistent world in speculative fiction. The last session will include extract readings of your new or revised work.

Wednesdays: poetry, 11am-1pm and prose, 2-4pm
  • 6 May
  • 13 May
  • 20 May
  • 27 May
  • 3 June
  • 10 June
Please book on only one course to reserve spaces for others.

There's still plenty of time to submit to our writing competition, open until 31 May. It's FREE to enter and there are over £12,000 worth of cash and writer development prizes up for grabs.

This year’s theme is Tomorrow and, as ever, we are looking for broad interpretations in all genres of short fiction and poetry. In poetry, judges are looking for a maximum of 42 lines words and in fiction a maximum of 2,000 words.

Dear friends,

During this uncertain time, we have temporarily suspended our programme of face to face delivery and are exploring how our creative offer can work digitally for the interim period. For those of you who had already booked on our CFWA writing workshops, we are creating a series of virtual workshops and will be in touch with you directly. Stay tuned for further details on upcoming workshops in Brighton that have yet to be announced.

Our small team of staff are working from home and we are looking at ways to continue providing support to our artists and writers whilst maintaining social distancing measures. We’re sharing daily creative challenges and resources through our social network channels, so do follow us and keep an eye on these. We’d love to know what ways you’ve remained creative so please do tag us and share anything new you’ve been working on.
