Harewood at Home Discover our place from your place Welome to Issue 3 of Harewood at Home – your weekly update on discovering a slice of Harewood from wherever you are. #harewoodathome Whilst the lockdown continues and you might feel like you're at a standstill, there's a hive of activity taking place in Harewood's world … whether that's the rhododendrons blossoming, the Bird Garden chattering or the curators creating new content for you to enjoy. In honour of English Tourism Week this week, we've pulled together some celebratory English content, including a look at Princess Mary's love of letter writing, and a celebration of English landscape and furniture design in Kate Whiteford's Harewood Contemporary commission. Harewood and the Lascelles family have long been associated with Leeds United – David Lascelles, current Earl of Harewood, is Honorary President and his father before him was President of Leeds United and the FA. Here Norman is pictured fourth from the right at the 80th birthday of the 7th Earl. The family and Trust honours his passing and our condolences are with his family at this time. We have also named one of our finest and most unique birds, the Palm Cockatoo, Norman. Harewood's Bird Garden needs your support   Can you help? As a charity, Harewood is reliant on constant income from our visitors and Members to ensure we can look after our 50+ species of birds, protect their conservation, and take part in 17 different international breeding programmes, alongside maintaining our wonderful House and Gardens for everyone to enjoy. The Harewood Bird Garden turns 50 this year, and whilst our gates remain closed due to the ongoing developments around Covid-19, work to look after our birds cannot stop. If you are in a position to help, Norman (our palm cockatoo, pictured above) and all of Harewood's birds need your urgent support. Across a 12-week period, it will cost £35,000 to support the Harewood Bird Garden and maintain our important work. Your support is vital. Listen now >> Did you know … ? 1 – The Bird Garden is an official zoo The Bird Garden has been a licensed zoo since the 1980s and a member of BIAZA, the professional body representing the best zoos and aquariums in Britain and Ireland. 2 – We are a bird rehab centre Since the Red Kites were re-introduced just over 20 years ago in the region, the Bird Garden acts as an important rehabilitation facility for Red Kites in the area. 3 – Birds come here from customs and excise Harewood is a holding venue for UK customs, receiving confiscated or seized animals, particularly prevalent in the 1980 & 90s. 4 – We actively support vital breeding programmes Harewood’s birds are part of 17 different managed international breeding programmes, of which our two magnificent condors are a part. Harewood is closed A message from Trust Director, Jane Marriott To our Members and Visitors, In light of rapid developments and communication around COVID-19 and the need to encourage everyone to embrace social distancing, Harewood has taken the difficult decision to fully close its site. We are so happy that some of you have been able to join us for our opening weekend of 2020. Whilst there is ample space for people to enjoy, it has become increasingly clear that we will find it hard to maintain the Government’s requirement of social distancing, and as the national messaging has moved to asking everyone to stay at home, this is the advice that we want all of our staff, volunteers and our wider community to uphold in order to ensure all our health and wellbeing. Harewood is a charity and your support over the next few months will be invaluable. We are sorry for the disappointment to our valued Members and Visitors. Our Members will receive an automatic three-month extension to their Membership. This will be under constant review depending on how long we may need to stay closed. We ask that Members who are due to renew their Membership will continue to support us, if you are in a position to do so. All online ticket holders (booked from now until 1 June) will be contacted from Monday 23 March and you will be offered the opportunity to postpone your visit. If you cannot visit, we would greatly appreciate if you would consider donating the amount of your ticket. With Gift Aid on top, this represents an extra 25% to the charity, at no extra cost to you. And of course if you would rather receive a refund, we completely understand. Please be assured that we will not rest whilst we are closed, and we will bring a slice of Harewood to you during this time. As an accredited museum, licensed zoo and award-winning garden, we have an abundance of stories to share across our beautiful collections and landscapes, and this we will be doing through an engaging online programme, on our website and social media. A reduced level of staff will be onsite to ensure the care of our collections, including the Birds and farm animals, and we hope to return to full opening as soon as it is safe to do so. Please take care of yourselves, thank you for your understanding at this difficult time, and we look forward to welcoming you back to Harewood.
