Cleckheaton Writers Group Minutes, 13 August 2018

Cleckheaton Writers Group met last night at Cleckheaton Library where Gemma and myself were in attendance, Sarah, Mandy, Neil, Cassie and Pauline having passed on their apologies.

The minutes from the previous meeting were passed.

WIP updates: Gemma has been working on her submission for the York Literature Festival (7-9 September) and I have written another chapter of my WIP. Both Gemma and I were not successful with our entries to the Penguin/Randomhouse WriteNow 2018 competition, but there were only 150 places from over 1700 applicants.

Upcoming competitions are as follows:

Brexit in Poetry competition. A poem of up to 50 lines saved as a word document or PDF (your name and poem title as the documents title) as an attached document to the email emailed to: submissions@hollandparkpress.co.uk with your contact details in the body of the email and Brexit in the subject line. Deadline is 31 December, entry is free and the prize is £200 plus publication. Full details: https://www.hollandparkpress.co.uk/magazine (I have sent in an entry)

Myslexia competition deadlines are 14 September for single poem and pamphlet competitions and 1 October for the four fiction competitions. You only have to submit the first 5k words in the novella/children's novel competition by 1 October, but the rest of the MS will be due by mid-February 2019. Writers online 'Timely topic' web-exclusive competition 'drying up' can be in any style/genre, poetry/prose of 500 words or less. The prize is £100 or a writing critique, plus publication. Full details: https://www.writers-online.co.uk/Writing-Competitions/Open-Competitions/writers-competitions

Gemma mentioned that a cheap writing retreat for women in West Yorkshire is being organised by Emma Morris on facebook. She will wait for more information and pass it on once she has it. Also there is an upcoming writing event #UrbiWrite. It is free and taking place in Leeds. There is one place left for the session this Saturday and there are plenty of spaces for the one in October. Details can be found on facebook or twitter.

As the next meeting would fall on Bank Holiday Monday (27th August) and the Library will be closed, the next meeting will now take place on Monday 3 September 5.30-7pm at Cleckheaton Library.
