Wakefield Lit Fest is back for 2017:
Talking Loud and Saying Summat
23 September - 1 October

This year, Beam has joined forces with A Firm of Poets in an exciting new collaboration to bring you Talking Loud and Saying Summat – a week-long festival which aims to celebrate and develop reading, writing and debate in Wakefield.

This year’s festival will take place Saturday 23 September – Sunday 1 October and aims to bring together festival partners to present a dynamic week-long programme dedicated to four individual themes with a series of live performances, talks, workshops and readings.

Poetry for the People – a day of celebration of spoken word with a glittering line up of the very best writers and performers guaranteed to change the way you feel about poetry!

We Need to Talk About Music - Developed in partnership with the Louder Than Words Festival, We Need to Talk About Music is a day of writing, conversation, music and argument with special guests including Edwyn Collins and Grace Maxwell, more to be announced in the next few weeks.

Beautiful Minds - with regular festival collaborators Wordliife we bring together a day of panel discussions focusing on wellbeing followed by an evening caberet with comedy, spoken word and performance with special guests.

Wakefield Rising - A day dedicated to the city’s creatives to showcase the work of local emerging writers and performers – part of the Lit Fest seed fund initiative that supports local talent development by providing a platform to share work with a programme of events including family activities, site-specific theatre, performance, live music, workshops and spoken word.

Talking Loud and Saying Summat Festival – Poetry for the People

For 2017, we are delighted to announce national treasure and creator of ‘dub poetry’, Linton Kwesi Johnson to Wakefield to headline the Poetry for the People one day event at St Austin’s Church on Saturday 23 September. Linton Kwesi Johnson is a Jamaican poet, journalist and author is widely considered to be the father of reggae dub poetry, a blend of reggae music and spoken verse.

Poetry for the People is a day of poetry and spoken word that is urgent, funny, entertaining - from Genevieve Walsh and the first of our ‘Breakfast Epiphanies’ to Gudrun’s Sisters exploration into the stories and songs of the Blues and John Hegley and his tale of the historic ‘Kinsley Evictions’.

The day will end in style with Poetry for the People Big Night Out with Linton Kwesi Johnson headlining a glittering night of arguably the finest spoken word artists in the country - and special guests John Hegley, Kate Fox and more - plus a DJ set. This is a real day of celebration of words that may change how you feel about poetry, forever!
