This year, Beam
has joined forces with A
Firm of Poets in an exciting new collaboration to
bring you Talking
Loud and Saying Summat – a week-long festival
which aims to celebrate and develop reading, writing and debate
in Wakefield.
This year’s festival will take place Saturday 23 September
– Sunday 1 October and aims to bring together
festival partners to present a dynamic week-long programme dedicated
to four individual themes with a series of live performances,
talks, workshops and readings.
Poetry
for the People – a day of celebration of spoken
word with a glittering line up of the very best writers and
performers guaranteed to change the way you feel about poetry!
We
Need to Talk About Music - Developed in
partnership with the Louder Than Words Festival, We Need to Talk
About Music is a day of writing, conversation, music and argument
with special guests including Edwyn Collins and Grace Maxwell,
more to be announced in the next few weeks.
Beautiful
Minds - with regular festival collaborators
Wordliife we bring together a day of panel discussions focusing
on wellbeing followed by an evening caberet with comedy, spoken
word and performance with special guests.
Wakefield
Rising -
A day dedicated to the city’s creatives to
showcase the work of local emerging writers and performers – part
of the Lit Fest seed fund initiative that supports local talent
development by providing a platform to share work with a
programme of events including family activities, site-specific
theatre, performance, live music, workshops and spoken word.
Talking Loud and Saying Summat
Festival – Poetry for the People
For 2017, we are delighted to announce national treasure and
creator of ‘dub poetry’,
Linton
Kwesi Johnson to Wakefield to headline the Poetry for the
People one day event at St Austin’s Church on
Saturday 23 September. Linton
Kwesi Johnson is a Jamaican poet, journalist and
author is widely considered to be the father of reggae dub
poetry, a blend of reggae music and spoken verse.
Poetry
for the People is a day of poetry and spoken word
that is urgent, funny, entertaining - from Genevieve Walsh
and the first of our ‘Breakfast Epiphanies’ to ‘Gudrun’s
Sisters’ exploration into the stories
and songs of the Blues and John
Hegley and his tale of the historic ‘Kinsley
Evictions’.
The day will end in style with Poetry for the People
Big Night Out with Linton Kwesi Johnson
headlining a glittering night of arguably the finest spoken word
artists in the country -
and
special guests John Hegley, Kate Fox and more - plus
a DJ set. This is a real day of celebration of words that may
change how you feel about poetry, forever!
