Cleckheaton Writers Group meeting 14 August 2017

Cleckheaton Writers Group met last night at Cleckheaton Library where Alice, Andy and myself were in attendance, Pauline, Sarah, Katherine, Mandy and Neil having passed on their apologies.

The minutes from the last meeting were passed and then we discussed work in progress updates.  I have been using the two books Sarah recommended for my WIP and have been editing and sending out work to competitions.  Alice and Andy have both been working on poems.

For the feedback sessions Andy shared three poems which were very evocative and I recommended the Open Minds poetry competition that is running at the moment, as the poems would be suitable if Andy wanted to send the poems out.  I then shared three different short sections from my WIP and explained the context behind them.  This led to a discussion about the numbers of characters in a novel and their arcs.

Alice mentioned that there is a short story competition in Writers Magazine open at the moment https://www.writers-online.co.uk/Writing-Competitions/.  The Morley Arts Festival (formerly Morley Literature Festival) runs from 27 September to 13 October and Wakefield Literature Festival runs from 23 September to 1 October (details of Wakefield Lit Fest in my previous blog post)

Because time allowed, we then completed a writing challenge with the theme of 'ghosts.'  We each completed a short piece which we shared with the group.  All were very different, Andy's was based on an actual event, mine was a period piece and Alice's a supernatural one.

As it will be a Bank Holiday for the next scheduled meeting and the library will be closed, the next meeting has been moved to Monday 4 September.  Both feedback slots are available and new members are always welcome.  Meetings fortnightly thereafter.
