Hello from Leeds Town Hall!

Over the coming months we’ll be shining a spotlight on some of the specialist contractors working on Leeds Town Hall's refurbishment, from talented Yorkshire‑based teams to experts travelling from further afield, highlighting the exceptional craft and care going into the work.

Meet the contractor: Stone Edge Restoration

Our first spotlight is on Stone Edge Restoration, an award-winning building restoration and conservation company operating across the north of England. They specialise in historic and listed buildings, churches, ancient sites and monuments.

By using sympathetic materials and traditional methods, they ensure that repairs and replacements work with the building, are sustainable and long-lasting.

Recently the team has carefully lifted and flipped the stone flags in the loggia (the large area at the top of the steps immediately in front of the main entrance doors). This has revealed the remarkable condition of the undersides, some of which still feature original pencil markings from when the flags were originally laid in the 1850s. The flags have also been ramped, allowing wheelchair users to enter through the main doors for the first time in the building’s history.

You can see more of Stone Edge’s work on the Stone Edge Restoration website or follow Stone Edge Restoration on social media.

History under our feet

While working in the loggia, Stone Edge uncovered a small piece of Leeds’ history: fragments of an old tram ticket.

Despite the damage, you can still make out several stops, including City Square, Hollis Street, Thwaite Gate and what looks like the edge of the Corn Exchange.

Although there’s no visible date, Leeds trams operated between 1871 and 1959, making this a really special find.

Close up of glossy green square tiles on the wall with dark grey grout in between.

A pop of green!

Elsewhere in the building, these glossy green tiles have been fitted in the lower access area and will soon appear in other places around the building.

They are Casa Ceramica Relief tiles in Gloss Green 31, chosen to complement the historic interiors while adding a fresh and contemporary touch to these newly refurbished spaces.

For all the latest from Leeds Town Hall, including progress updates, images and behind‑the‑scenes details, visit the Leeds Town Hall website or follow Leeds Town Hall on social media.

Thank you for following our refurbishment journey,

We warmly invite you to join us for Flying High: Creating Flags of Awe & Wonder, a very special flag-making project for our times, which visually and colourfully captures and celebrates all that is AWE-some and WONDER-full about our Holbeck & South Leeds communities!

We are part of something much bigger than ourselves. The aim of this project is to create a collection of handmade silk pennant flags which will represent and celebrate the human experience of awe, which is by far the least scientifically researched emotion, capturing images of the wonder-full and the awe-some which we find all around us every day, right on our doorsteps.

Together, we’ll explore all the ways we connect to awe and wonder: including by being outdoors in nature (a garden, a park, a local green space), connecting with other people (finding awe in the moral beauty, kindness and courage of others), in spirituality or our own religious practice, or through music. And these are just some examples!

We warmly invite you to join us in bringing our collective attention to everyday sources of awe and wonder, recording the things we find awe-some and wonder-full around us, whether that’s by taking a photograph, writing some words, or a drawing or sketch.
Together, we’ll translate these into images which will be hand-painted onto silk pennant flags, using batik techniques. Don’t worry if you’ve never done anything like this before: no experience necessary! By creating a series of vibrant and colourful flags in celebration of what we discover, we will make a community resource to be presented, displayed and enjoyed at outdoor events for years to come.

The creative workshop sessions are open to adults from across South Leeds, free to attend, and you can come along to as many of them as you would like. Refreshments will be provided, and please talk to us if childcare is a consideration for you.
How To Sign Up

You can sign up for the creative workshops here:

The workshops are also drop-in, so you’re welcome to come to The Warehouse in Holbeck on the day of the session. By signing up to let us know you’ll be attending, this helps us to plan ahead though!
Creative Workshop Dates & Times:
Weds 13th May 10.30am til 3pm - Flying High project introduction and masterclass with Kinetika’s lead artist Ali Pretty and members of the Slung Low team. With a vegan lunch provided, we’ll discuss the themes of the project, take a short walk together down to Holbeck Moor, and start to gather design ideas.

Over the following five weeks we’ll hold a series of drop-in workshop sessions. You’re welcome to join as many of these as you’d like. Times & dates of these sessions to be announced on our website and social media channels soon!

TECHNIRAMA

Introduced in 1956 with its first feature production, The Monte Carlo Story, Technirama quickly gained a reputation for gorgeous photography and as the preferred format for international productions and large-scale epics, eventually expanding into 70mm presentation with Super Technirama 70.

This strand marks the 70th anniversary of Technirama, celebrating a process that successfully balanced high image quality with immense cinematic scale.

THE INDIAN WESTERN

Central to the Indian Western is the figure of the dacoit (bandit), a character that can be traced back to the 1940s in Hindi cinema and even earlier in Indian film history.  Archetypically portrayed as an outlaw, the dacoit has long served as a personification of villainy but also bears a strong resemblance to the American cowboy.

Widescreen Weekend is proud to present a selection of films exploring 'The Indian Western' alongside writer, scholar and international film curator Dr. Omar Ahmed.

SHOWSTOPPERS!

Widescreen Weekend is no stranger to the magic of the musical as many showstoppers, dance numbers and dream ballet have graced the silver screen of Pictureville over the years. This year will certainly be no different, bringing you a selection of musicals to delight and entertain, some of which are timeless classics and others which you may be seeing for the very first time.

We are delighted to be partnering with Dominic Broomfield-McHugh, Professor of Musicology at the University of Sheffield and a world-leading expert on musical theatre and film on this strand.

This year, we’re thrilled to present an authentic 3-strip Cinerama screening, showcasing the intricate projection technique in all its glory.

Her first collection The Art of Falling(Seren 2015) won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize. Suitable for adult beginners and experienced writers alike.
Kim will also be reading in conversation with Kristina Diprose at City Library on Saturday 6th June at 4pm. Come and join us!

Labour's Heathcliff

Lord Snowden
The political revenge story of Philip Snowden
Philip Snowden was a product of the moors of Brontë country. With typical Yorkshire grit, he overcame grinding rural poverty and paralysing disability to become the Labour Party's first Chancellor of the Exchequer.
But one decision would change his life totally, turning him from socialist hero to traitor and villain and resulting in his expulsion from the party.
Snowden embraced his new role with gusto, dedicating the rest of his life to attacking the party and people he had once loved. His bitter, self-destructive quest for vengeance has strange parallels to a more famous fictional moorland outsider.
Join historian Alexander Clifford, editor of a new edition of Snowden's autobiography, as he explores the fascinating story of how and why Philip Snowden betrayed his party to ruthlessly pursue a political vendetta. Was he Labour's Heathcliff?
Keighley Library (Local Studies), Saturday 30 May, 1:30pm. £3/pp to be paid on arrival at the event. Tickets https://www.ticketsource.com/bradfordlibraries/t-zooemjy

Crime, Coffee and Cake with JM Hall

Ilkley Library & Visitor Information Centre, Ilkley, LS29 8HA
 Saturday 16th May 2026 10:30AM
Join us for the first of our Crime, Coffee and Cake events as part of Crime Reading Month.

Enjoy coffee (or tea) and cake with JM Hall, chat with him about his experiences as a crime writer and find out about his new novel Murder on the Cornish Train (2026), which sees him swap the Yorkshire Dales for the Cornish coast in a cosy gothic mystery full of atmosphere and intrigue.

JM Hall is the pen name of Jonathan Hall, a Yorkshire-born writer who has spent most of his life in the county. Before turning to fiction full time, he enjoyed a long career as a deputy headteacher in a northern primary school—an experience that continues to inspire his writing.
Alongside his work in education, Jonathan wrote extensively for stage and radio. He is the creator of the award-winning BBC Radio series Trust, starring Julie Hesmondhalgh.

His debut novel, A Spoonful of Murder (2022), introduced readers to Liz, Thelma and Pat—three retired teachers who turn their skills to solving crimes. Their warmth, wit and sharp observational skills quickly won readers over, leading to a much-loved series of cosy crime novels, the latest being A Brush with Death (2025).

Now retired from teaching, he writes full time—though he’s proud to say he’s never lost the knack of organising a painting table or running a school assembly.

Your Theatre Guide, Simplified!

BIG NEWS!

West End Wilma now makes it easier than ever to find the information you are looking for.

Simply type in the name of the show or theatre you want to find out more about and it will bring it right up for you!

You can also use the drop-down menu to filter by what is ‘playing now’ or ‘opening soon’ and what shows have matinee performances on which days.

You can also use the drop-down menu to see upcoming accessible performances (Relaxed, Captioned, BSL, Audio Described).

For smaller theatres and shows, where you might want to see what is playing, the Off-West End page of the website allows you to click on a theatre to see what shows are playing or coming up.

It's an easy way to see what is playing at various off-West End theatres without having to visit them all individually.

Weekly Escape

Hey

This recent run of cool, sunny days has me itching to get out on a proper long walk ☀️🥾

Not just a quick loop, but one of those full day, legs-a-bit-tired, views-for-miles kind of adventures.

And if that’s exactly what you’re craving right now - this one is hard to beat.

Tucked away in the South Pennines, there’s a circular route across Marsden Moor that quietly delivers some of the best views in West Yorkshire…without ever feeling overcrowded.

You start gently, following the canal out of the village. Then cross a historic packhorse bridge that feels like stepping back in time.

And before long you’re climbing up onto open moorland with nothing but sky and rolling hills around you.

By the time you reach Standedge, it genuinely feels like you’re standing on top of the world.

But here’s the thing…

This isn’t one of those walks where you can just turn up and follow the signs.

A lot of the route isn’t waymarked, and it’s surprisingly easy to miss key turns - especially once you’re out on the moor.

Which is exactly why I put together a full step-by-step guide 👇

👉 Read the full guide here (before you go)

Inside, I’ve broken down:

  • The exact 10-mile circular route
  • Where to start and park (so you don’t waste time figuring it out)
  • Key landmarks to look out for along the way
  • And a shorter option if you don’t fancy the full distance

If you’re looking for a walk that really feels like an escape, this is one to add to your list while the weather is just right.

Trust me…this is the kind of route you’ll still be thinking about days (even years!) later.

Until our next adventure,

P.S. This route catches a lot of people out because it looks straightforward, but a few wrong turns on the moor can easily add miles to your walk.

👉 I’ve mapped it out step-by-step here so you can just enjoy the views instead

National Walking Month

National Walking Month just handed you one. Britain is putting on a show: loch shores, cliff paths, village lanes, estate grounds. The hotels? They happen to sit in Britain's best walking landscapes. Happy coincidence. The boots are your department.

Because the water makes the best walking companion.

Hambleton Hall, Rutland

Rutland Water's edge, then a Michelin-starred table.

The Atlantic Hotel, Jersey

Clifftop paths. Channel views. A very good reason to be in Jersey.

Hebridean Princess

Wander ashore. Walk Scotland's Western Isles. Return for dinner.

Ness Walk, Inverness

The River Ness on your doorstep. The Highlands beyond.

Two hotels, two of Britain's most dramatic landscapes.

Penmaenuchaf Hotel, Wales

Eryri (Snowdonia) from the garden gate. No further introduction needed.

Farlam Hall, Cumbria

Hadrian's Wall country. History underfoot, big skies above.

Proof that the finest walks don't always require mud on your boots.

The Hari, London

Hyde Park, Belgravia squares and the city at its most walkable.

The Swan at Lavenham

One of England's best-preserved medieval villages, remarkable on foot.

When the grounds are this good, you may not make it past the gate.
