    🌻 MAY 2026 🌻

Blooming 'eck! What a month April has been. We have been so proud to roll open the shutter and welcome you all in to The Warehouse In Holbeck, sharing the amazing work that has been showcased by some brilliant artists.

And our season of pay what you decide shows carries on delivering in May, with theatre maker Paul Varjack bringing the “endlessly entertaining” Nine SixteenthsWe’ll be welcoming Slung Low debutantes PurpleDoor, with their new approach to a classic with Romeo.Juliet and performer Bobak Champion who will be bringing his show I’m Muslamic Don’t Panik, which combines heartfelt storytelling, dance, music and travel.

Friends, this will be a good May.
    Saturday 9th May
    7.30pm

In 2004, in the SuperBowl halftime show finale, 23 year old Justin Timberlake ripped off 37 year old Janet Jackson’s top.
From THE MALFUNCTION to THE AFTERMATH and a celebration of RECLAMATION, Nine Sixteenths is a journey through 3 acts, exploring themes of representation and pop culture with a nostalgia for the early 00’s, and the hopes and dreams of 4 black female performers through a visual variety of devised theatre, dance and lip sync.

    Saturday 16th May

Romeo and Juliet is not a love story. The tragedy of a young man radicalised into extreme violence, and the thirteen-year-old girl his actions drive to suicide has been misunderstood for centuries.
Inspired by the TV hit Adolescence, Romeo.Juliet is the latest in PurpleDoor’s fifteen years’ experience with the Bard, with work co-created and made for local working-class audiences.

Story telling meets dance, live music meets clowning.
From Bristol to the Tehran marathon and back again, Bobak invites us to join him on a journey to accept his own heritage, against a media culture which holds fast to the idea that the Middle East is a frightening and dangerous place.

And of course, there's more see. Have a look at the rest of the Spring season - we're so excited for it and hope you are as well.

Spring has arrived in the Glen, bringing longer days, fresh colour across the landscape, and the welcome return of activity after the quieter winter months. There’s a renewed energy throughout the estate just now, from early morning birdsong echoing through the woodland to the first signs of wildlife emerging across the hills. It’s a special time of year when everything feels like it’s beginning again, and the Glen is full of those small, memorable moments that make each visit unique.  As the season unfolds, we look forward to welcoming many of you back to the Glen. There’s plenty to enjoy in the weeks ahead, and we hope you’ll be part of it.
Although the Deeside Nature Festival is taking a well deserved break in 2026, we’re continuing our popular wildlife lookout sessions for one special weekend (22nd - 25th May), simply because we love spoiling you. We are offering 6 individual spaces each night at £25 per person.  These sessions run from 8pm–10pm, perfectly timed for peak animal activity.  On arrival, your guide will meet you, escort you to the hide, and settle you in before leaving you to enjoy the peace and magic of the surroundings.  Affectionately known as “The Lookout,” our secluded wildlife hide, a thoughtfully repurposed property, sits on the edge of ancient pine forest, offering a front-row seat to the Cairngorms’ wildlife. Regular sightings include red deer, pine martens, badgers and red squirrels, with the occasional glimpse of the elusive Scottish wildcat.

Spaces are limited, so please call the estate office on 01339 886451 or e-mail info@glentanar.co.uk to book your spot.
This month, we were delighted to host the Aboyne Academy Tourism & Hospitality day at the estate, welcoming second-year students for an engaging and hands-on introduction to the world of hospitality and tourism. Throughout the day, students explored how these industries contribute to the running of the estate, while also gaining insight into how the skills learned can transfer into a wide range of future career paths. The group was divided into three teams, each taking part in a series of interactive workshops designed to bring different aspects of the sector to life. The day concluded with a lively scavenger hunt, challenging students to apply what they had learned in a fun and collaborative way. It was a fantastic day enjoyed by all, and we’re proud to play a part in inspiring the workforce of tomorrow. We now look forward to hosting our upcoming Aboyne Academy Forestry day and continuing to give back to the community.

A little update for our returning holiday cottage guests…

The kitchen at West Millfield has just had a refurb, and we think it’s looking the part. A bit of a spoiler if you’re due to stay soon, but we couldn’t resist sharing — we hope you love it as much as we do.

And a little bonus bit of news - we’ve had a New Year cancellation, which means a handful of cottages are now available on the Glen Tanar Estate this year.  If you fancy a quiet Hogmanay in beautiful surroundings, with good company and a bit of peace and calm, this is a lovely chance to get away and spend it with those who matter most.

Book your stay via the link below.

Last week, our ranger Jane had the pleasure of accompanying Sandy on a walk up to the Rest and Be Thankful on the Fungle path, where they met the rest of his family who had made their way up from Aboyne. It was a special outing, not just for the views and the good company, but for the personal connection Sandy shares with this much-loved spot.

Sandy’s great-great-grandfather was among those who helped build the Rest and Be Thankful, and you could sense the pride as he stood there once again, retracing steps that echo through his own family history. He was, as he put it, “fair chuffed” to be back.

Moments like these are a lovely reminder that the landscape here isn’t just rich in wildlife and scenery, but in stories too — quietly held and passed down through generations. It was a real privilege for Jane to be part of the day and to share in a connection that brings the past and present together so meaningfully.

We’ve been seeing some fine spring catches on our fishing beats since the season began, including this lovely 8lb springer caught on our Deecastle beat by our ghillie Joe.  As the days grow milder, there’s still good availability across our beats for those keen to get out on the river.

Our beautiful trout loch is also now fully open for the season, and we’re delighted to have re-introduced a third boat - meaning more opportunities to enjoy the peace and quiet while trying your luck at landing a couple of rainbows.

Know where to go. Know where to be well.

The history hunter, the wine enthusiast, the sea-gazer, the one who just needs a very good bed and somewhere quiet to think. Britain rewards every kind of traveller visiting Scotland to Cornwall. Ten hotels. One perfect match.

    Boringdon Hall | Devon

A grand Devon manor with a seriously good secret: the award-winning Gaia Spa. Expect thermal bliss, deep calm, and minimal reasons to leave. Everything here nudges you into a slower rhythm, where even the very idea of rushing feels like something you’ve all but politely forgotten.

    White Hart Hotel | Lincoln

Steps from one of England's great cathedrals, the White Hart is a beautifully restored coaching inn with centuries of stories and sights worth discovering on its doorstep. Medieval streets, independent shops, and a hill climb that earns its view. Lincoln has always deserved more credit.

    Cromlix | Perthshire

A newly restored Victorian estate in the Perthshire countryside, with enough space and scenery to keep the whole family happily occupied. Loch views, country pursuits, and fresh air in abundance. The best kind of family holiday.

    Prestonfield | Edinburgh

Built in 1687 by the King's own architect, Prestonfield House has been one of Edinburgh's most theatrical addresses ever since. Baroque grandeur three centuries in the making. The drama is intentional. The Highland cattle are just a bonus.

    Farlam Hall | Cumbria

A country house close to Hadrian's Wall, home to Michelin-starred Cedar Tree by Hrishikesh Desai. Stephenson's Rocket once sheltered here.  Today, one of the most exciting things on the premises is what's on the plate.

    The Nare | Cornwall

Sitting above its own beach on the Roseland Peninsula, The Nare has been perfecting romantic escapes for generations. Private beach, candlelit dinners, sea views from your room. Unhurried, immaculate, and wonderful.

    Hambleton Hall | Rutland

Perched on its own peninsula above Rutland Water, Hambleton Hall has one of the finest outlooks in the Midlands, and a Michelin star to match. Nature on one side, exceptional cooking on the other and views that follow you wherever you settle. All worth staring at.

    Armathwaite Hall | Cumbria

On the shores of Bassenthwaite, Armathwaite Hall knows what proper peace looks like. Lake views, spa treatments, and some of the most unspoiled scenery in the Lake District. Here, mornings quietly slip into afternoons without anyone noticing.

    The Headland | Newquay

Clifftop, red-brick, and resolutely Cornish, The Headland has the kind of Fistral Beach views worth crossing the country for. Beginner or pro, the waves will be calling. Surfing optional, but encouraged.

    The Angel | Abergavenny

Wales' great British inn, with sister restaurant The Walnut Tree next door. One of the finest places to eat in the British Isles. The Black Mountains outside, should you find room for a walk after dinner.

    Careless Talk
    Fri 8 May, 7.30pm
London Pub Theatres Nominee - Best Solo Show
A true story of high treason, espionage, spam fritters. The only British person to be tried for treason in the Second World War takes to the stage for the first time.

Was Mabel a collaborator? A visionary? Or just an outsider? Was she the victim of a witch hunt? Or the victim of her own uncompromising nature? Join Mabel on Sandown Beach with her secateurs, sequinned tassels and heartfelt - if misguided self-belief.
By Ali Williams, based on the novel 'Careless Talk' by James Friel (shortlisted for the John Llewelyn Rhys Prize). Based on a true story, this tale opens a dialogue on the justice system in this country; who does it protect, how and why? And what of those who fall through the net, the unpopular, the uncompromising? This dialogue is as relevant now as it was then, in this frequently hilarious but ultimately moving play.

The story begins in Cheshire, in a fictionalised Parkgate, and ends on the Isle of Wight. Funny: accessible: well crafted. Standing Ovation Nominee for London Pub Theatre Awards - ‘Careless Talk is a cross between a wonderfully observed Victoria Wood sketch of everyday life and an episode of ‘Dad’s Army’.
    Tickets / Info
    Careless Talk: Trailer SD 480p
'This one-woman show is superbly acted by Ali Williams, who effortlessly embodies all the characters in a tour de force performance, displaying a range of accents and mannerisms at a heady pace, with great skill and vitality.'

'With a fondness and reverence for its subject matter and a versatile actress in the lead, this is a show you won’t want to miss.’

    Live Webcams are Back!

We know lots of you absolutely love watching our live Dorset webcams for a taste of the coast when you're at home.
Sadly, a couple of them were damaged in a storm over Winter, and then this Spring we've been in the process of switching servers, so there has unfortunately been periods of downtime where they've not been available. Good news is, they're all back online now!

Our new server also streams them directly to our YouTube channel, so it's now even easier to watch than before!

With thanks to Hannah at Get Lost Yorkshire:

    Weekly Escape

    Hey

There’s something about waterfalls that just…slows everything down 💧

The constant rush of water, the cool air on your face, the way everything feels quieter somehow - like the world pauses for a moment while you’re stood there.

It’s one of the reasons I keep coming back to Yorkshire’s hidden waterfall walks…and this one is a favourite.

Just a short distance from Bolton Abbey, there’s a tucked-away trail that leads you into a peaceful valley - and eventually, to a waterfall that feels like your own little discovery.

It’s not one of the big-name spots.
There are no crowds gathering for photos.
And if you didn’t know it was there…you’d walk straight past it.

But that’s what makes it special.

You start with a gentle riverside walk, then slowly drift away from the busy paths. The landscape opens up, the noise fades, and suddenly you’re stood in a quiet woodland setting with water cascading beside you.

It’s simple. It’s calming. And it’s exactly the kind of place that reminds you why Yorkshire is so special.

✨ If you want to find it for yourself…

I’ve put together a full guide with:

    • The exact route to follow (so you don’t miss it 👀)
    • Where to park (without the usual guesswork)
    • And how to turn it into a longer, more scenic walk if you’ve got the time

👉 Read the full guide here and plan your visit

If you’re anything like me and love a good waterfall walk, this is one to add to your list while the weather’s improving.

And honestly…it might just become one of your favourites too.

    Until our next adventure,
