Mental Health Awareness Week: Suicide awareness training As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, we are encouraging everyone to take part in the free online suicide awareness training from Zero Suicide Alliance. The short course helps people recognise warning signs, start supportive conversations, and feel more confident helping someone who may be struggling. The training is free, takes around 30 minutes, and is open to anyone aged 16 and over. Sometimes, a simple conversation can make a life-changing difference. You can find out more and access the training by clicking the button below. Social prescribing: Mindful Mondays Mindful Mondays are friendly, informal groups where people come together to chat, try new activities and connect with a social prescribing link worker. It’s a welcoming space for anyone living with mental health challenges. Two residents who attend shared how much the group means to them: “I didn’t know what to expect… but I’m so glad I went.” One member, age 70, described arriving for the first time anxious and unsure, but strangers soon became friends. They now call it “Happy Monday” because no matter how tough the week has been, they always leave feeling lighter and supported. “Sometimes it’s the only time I go out all week… and it really helps.” Another member, 73, said the group gives them purpose, and the chance to meet people who genuinely listen. They say they appreciate the warm welcome from the link worker which encourages them to keep coming back. Mindful Monday groups take place at various locations across Kirklees and is just one of the activities and services that can be accessed through our social prescribing service. Social prescribing helps people to improve their health, wellbeing and social welfare by connecting them to services and activities in their local community. You can book an appointment through your GP, just ask for an appointment with a Social Prescribing Link Worker. Find out more below. - Every year, wildfires destroy large areas of countryside and wildlife habitats, causing long‑lasting damage to the environment.
- Wildfires can spread quickly and threaten homes and infrastructure, particularly during warm, dry weather.
As the weather warms up, the risk of wildfires can rise. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service's advice focuses on preventing fires before they start and knowing exactly what to do if you spot one. Below are some simple steps you can take to help protect the wildlife and moors. - Clear up and take your rubbish home after picnics
- Observe all signs and notices – they are there for a reason
- Follow the National Trust Countryside Code
- Don’t leave glass bottles. Not only can they hurt people and animals, but they can magnify the sun’s rays and start a fire
- Never throw lighted cigarette ends onto the ground, or out of the window of vehicles or trains. Always ensure that they are completely extinguished and disposed of responsibly.
- Never be tempted to light a fire in the countryside and only barbecue in authorised areas
- And remember, if you see a fire or someone using a BBQ on the moorland - call 999 and ask for FIRE.
