Cleckheaton Writers Group (CWG) met on Monday 11 May at 5.30-7pm with Karen and Barbara in attendance, Paul and Michelle having passed on their apologies.
The minutes from the last meeting were passed.
WIP updates: Karen has written some poetry in her creative writing class and been working on a crime MS (feedback/editing) for one of her own business clients. Barbara has started some poetry but not edited it. She has also looked over an old MS where chapters 1-4 are written. The premise is a vet murdered in a racing stables, inspired by as a child getting the FA cup from the Queen - thinking she will set it in the early 2000s.
CW comps/workshops/events: Karen shared details of some upcoming Anna Chilvers workshops with the agenda and the Huddersfield, Bradford and Theakstons Festival details. Also, there is an I Am In Print competition with a deadline of 13 May with 12 different genre categories. £16 each entry.
Writing plans: Karen will continue MS feedback on the crime novel, hopes to put together a writing/editing/submissions plan for her own writing and continue work on her current WIP. Barbara will continue with the crime novel which she brought along for feedback, and put all the other writing on the back burner.
Feedback: Barbara shared her first chapter for her D I Barber crime novel. Karen felt the reveal of the body was a little rushed but she loved the humour and characterisation. She suggested a stronger ending to the chapter, perhaps combining some of chapter one and chapter two, and to explain clearly which character has made a phone call to their secretary to come to the stables. A great start to a novel and look forward to hearing more as the MS progresses.
Writing challenge: Weather.
Nest meeting: 1 June 2026 due to the Bank Holiday.
