Cleckheaton Writers Group minutes, meeting 27 April 2026

Cleckheaton Writers Group (CWG) met on Monday 27 April 2026 at 5.30-7pm at Cleckheaton Library with Barbara, Karen and Paul in attendance, Michael, Molly and Reuben having passed on their apologies.

There were no minutes from the last meeting.

WIP updates: Karen has entered some writing competitions and also started a creative writing course on a Tuesday evening with Hoot Creative Arts where she has written some poetry. Barbara has been editing previous writing, including a story she started in lockdown where the main character was visiting her dad, sprained her ankle and then couldn't leave because of lockdown. Paul has visited some places in Ireland that are going to be set places on the road in his novel, taking notes on location details, and has interviewed some people regarding the nonfiction book about the Enfield poltergeist. They were true believers and didn't take kindly to his contra evidence. This led to a very interesting discussion.

CW comps/workshops/events:  Karen shared details of some Anna Chivers Bogwise writing events, Huddersfield Literature Festival, Bradford Literature Festival and programmes for the upcoming Theakstons festivals. NB Karen has since shared some updated workshops with Anna Chilvers alongside the agenda for the next CWG meeting.

Writing plans: Karen hopes to put together a writing/subbing/editing plan and continue her creative writing class. Paul is steady away with the Enfield book. Barbara suggested an anthology/leaflet and invites CWG members to contact her should they wish to contribute. She hopes to work on some new stories or some of the old. This reminded her of her story about a care home based around the Date of Birth door code numbers to get in houses for caring duties and this led to an interesting discussion.

Feedback sessions: Karen shared a couple of her poems from her creative writing class which were well received. One in particular was felt to be melancholy.

Monthly writing challenge: Theme suggested for May - Weather.

The next meeting will take place on Monday 11 May followed by 1 June due to the May Bank Holiday.
