My writer friend Anna Chilvers is running some upcoming writing retreats and a writing day:
Most months have one full moon, but every now and then comes along a month with two full moons, one at the beginning and one at the end. When this happens the second moon is called a Blue Moon, and there is one at the end of this month. This writing day will consist of a morning workshop, and an afternoon writing session, finishing with a read around at the end of the day. The cost is £40

Writing by the Sea
A Tutored Writing Retreat
Monday 27th July - Saturday 1st August 2026
Do you fancy a week by the sea with nothing to do except write and enjoy the scenery? Would you like to spend the week in the company of other writers, sharing inspiration and ideas? Would you like to have all your meals provided - all you have to do is rock up in the dining room?
Anna Chilvers and Ali Harper are running our next tutored writing retreat at Cober Hill, five miles up the east coast from Scarborough.
Anna and Ali have worked together on many retreats and are passionate about enabling writers to express themselves creatively. This year’s theme is Writing Talk which will cover a wide variety of topics, including voice, dialogue, what we talk about when we talk about writing. The course includes workshops, [writing] exercise classes, seminars, writing time, an open mic night, feedback groups and the chance to recharge your creative batteries. We will have a surprise guest.
Check in is available from 3pm on Monday. The course starts at 5pm and includes full board and accommodation in single, or double, en-suite bedrooms. This is our sixth year at Cober Hill and it’s a beautiful place, within walking distance of the coastline and with gorgeous grounds, including a tennis court and croquet lawn. There are lounges for our exclusive use, in addition to the training room and a theatre space for the open mic night. The bedrooms are all single occupancy, with ensuite facilities and wifi. There are a limited number of double or larger rooms which cost slightly more. Please state when booking which type of room you would require. There is also a bar!
What writers have said about our retreats:
A relaxed, collaborative atmosphere
This is a great, practical course with friendly, kind and experienced tutors who really know their stuff
A creative and stimulating experience that encouraged me to get into the pattern of writing.
BOOKING ARRANGEMENTS:
The cost for the course is £840 and includes full board from Monday’s evening meal to Saturday’s breakfast. You can reserve a double room for an additional payment of £50 (there are only a limited number of double beds available, so these will be allocated on a first come, first served basis) or a larger twin or triple room for an additional premium of £25. Bog-time: Retreat into Writing is a three-day writing retreat in North Yorkshire from Friday 20th November to Sunday 22nd November 2026.
Time on bogs is slow - they grow at a rate of one millimetre per year. An established bog holds a huge depth of time in its peaty depths; a new bog is a delicate thing full of potential. This three-day retreat is a chance to write in bog-time.
Over the long weekend we will learn from the bog in terms of what we write, and how we write it. There will be writing workshops; a chance to share your work and ideas with others; and free time to get stuck into your writing and to explore this incredibly beautiful area.
With miles of moorland to choose from, on Saturday morning, we’ll visit a truly exceptional bog on the North York Moors. Fen Bog has 18,000 years of peat growth, flushes, reed beds, heathland, embryonic raised bogs, and incredible views of the North Yorks Moors. As you’d expect, it has unparalleled biodiversity including curlew, merlin and willow warblers, and the golden-ringed dragonfly. The mire bottom has some of the most unusual species of sphagnum moss, and plants including slender sedge, round-leaved sundew, cranberry, butterwort, marsh violet and bog asphodel.
The retreat will be held at Cober Hill, near Scarborough. This is a historic venue just minutes from the North York Moors and Heritage Coast. It’s set within 11 acres of meadows and woodlands, with a secret garden and its own path to the sea,
The cost of the retreat, including full board, is £435.
Rooms are all single use and en-suite, and most are twin/triple.
There are a limited number of double rooms at a cost of £460, and some smaller single rooms for £405 – these are on a first-come, first-served basis.
You may reserve a place by paying a deposit of £100. The remainder of the fee will need to be paid by Friday 9 October. (If you would like to pay in instalments please get in touch and we can sort out a plan.)
