Flying High Creating Flags of Awe & Wonder Workshops at Slung Low

These free to attend workshops take place in May and June: 

We warmly invite you to join us for Flying High: Creating Flags of Awe & Wonder, a very special flag-making project for our times, which visually and colourfully captures and celebrates all that is AWE-some and WONDER-full about our Holbeck & South Leeds communities!   We are part of something much bigger than ourselves. The aim of this project is to create a collection of handmade silk pennant flags which will represent and celebrate the human experience of awe, which is by far the least scientifically researched emotion, capturing images of the wonder-full and the awe-some which we find all around us every day, right on our doorsteps. Together, we’ll explore all the ways we connect to awe and wonder: including by being outdoors in nature (a garden, a park, a local green space), connecting with other people (finding awe in the moral beauty, kindness and courage of others), in spirituality or our own religious practice, or through music. And these are just some examples!   We warmly invite you to join us in bringing our collective attention to everyday sources of awe and wonder, recording the things we find awe-some and wonder-full around us, whether that’s by taking a photograph, writing some words, or a drawing or sketch.  Together, we’ll translate these into images which will be hand-painted onto silk pennant flags, using batik techniques. Don’t worry if you’ve never done anything like this before: no experience necessary! By creating a series of vibrant and colourful flags in celebration of what we discover, we will make a community resource to be presented, displayed and enjoyed at outdoor events for years to come.    The creative workshop sessions are open to adults from across South Leeds, free to attend, and you can come along to as many of them as you would like. By signing up to let us know you’ll be attending, this helps us to plan ahead though! Creative Workshop Dates & Times: Weds 13th May 10.30am til 3pm - Flying High project introduction and masterclass with Kinetika’s lead artist Ali Pretty and members of the Slung Low team. With a vegan lunch provided, we’ll discuss the themes of the project, take a short walk together down to Holbeck Moor, and start to gather design ideas.   Over the following five weeks we’ll hold a series of drop-in workshop sessions. You’re welcome to join as many of these as you’d like. Times & dates of these sessions to be announced on our website and social media channels soon!   Thursday 25th June – Sunday 28th June: Flying High design and making workshops where together we’ll be making the final designs, then painting and waxing the pennant flags.
